Anyone go to the f?te? Just like Goose Green last week (and last year) but spread out over a larger area. Was ok of you want cup cakes and handmade jewellery, but nothing more imaginitive. If only I had an imagination.

Anyone know what happened in Dulwich Village this weekend? I was walking through to the f?te Sunday morning and noticed the windows of the flower shop boarded up; then saw that a couple of smaller windows in Cafe Rouge also boarded up!

There are distance markers painted at intervals around the road. Can't remember the total though.

I am thinking of doing something special for a childrens birthday party soon (7yr old). Has anyone got any ideas? Party favours, sweets/gifts etc. How much should I be prepared to spend per head? Entertainment ideas? Your experiences would be gratefully received. Thanks all :)

'New' flats on Underhill Road
Chase Dulwit replied to Chase Dulwit's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Yes they're the ones. I quite like them though. -
Does anyone know why the rather nice post-modern flats finished well over a year ago are still empty? Walked past today and some scrote has grafiti-ed the front. Next the windws will be broken and left un-fixed I'll wager. Although, even when lived in nobody bothers to maintain the pleasing appearance. E.g. The 'Levante' (I think) flats on the end of Melford Rd (opposite Barcelona, where the smart timber cladding is now either bleached by the sun, or has peeling varnish hanging off.

It makes me feel good to realise that two people whose work I enjoy are part of my local community. The community I have grown up in, and that I also get to rub shoulders with them in Barry off licence. I thought it was a nice coincidence that I'd just travelled into the west end to see one of them perform and another was performing in the building diectly opposite. Coming back on the 176 I went past Jenny Eclair's house and wondered whether i could run a minibus service for all of the local celebs.

One of them could have been neighbourly and given us a lift home!

Just got back from Cat on a Hot Tin Roof at the Novello with Adrian Lester, James Earl Jones etc. Noticed that Lesley Sharp is on in something opposite. Neither Adrian nor Lesley were on the 176 home though?

Chase Dulwit replied to Rosie H's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
At least fourteen flats I think. But looks like they will get guaranteed parking close to where they live. -

Dear chichirara (the shop)? I remember some Bartletts from the 70's. They lived in Gibbon Rd, Nunhead. Any use? -
Anyone getting tyre punctures on Barry Road?
Chase Dulwit replied to kpjigsaw's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Sorry , the car break-in rant has nothing at all to do with the tyre place; I'm still bitter about it. -
Anyone getting tyre punctures on Barry Road?
Chase Dulwit replied to kpjigsaw's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Interstingly, I live very close to the tyre place and have noticed a few, very long (new) nails nearby. However, I used to get punctures regularly and haven't had any since they opened up (tempting fate now). Although. I did have by car broken into and completely cleared out in Tyrell Rd directly opposite a couple of months ago. -
Selfridges have stocked their stuff for years, as well as John Lewis; Waitrose for a while, and I hear that it has just gone into World Duty Free at Terminal 5! They also supply other, very exclusive stores, but re-branded with that stores' packaging.

Traffic Lights @ Forest Hill Road
Chase Dulwit replied to Mrs Y's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I completely agree. I was in a queue there on Sat afternoon and someone further back started honking, which led to four men getting out of the car in front of him, then generally intimidating him, tapping on windows etc. Remember, this is a main route out of Peckham, god knows what could happen given the right (or wrong) mixture of people and circumstances. -
How about Charles Barry (jnr) for whom the road I dwell is named? although I don't know if he lived here. Michael Faraday, Henry Bessemer, Camille Pissaro, Margaret Thatcher were all involved with ED, but lived close by (Walworth, Camberwell, Crystal Palace, Dulwich). I'm not sure that Dickens ever lived here (mainly Bankside), but his involvement was more with Dulwich Village and the gallery. Maybe the most important name is Edward Alleyn, who also lived at Bankside but moved to Dulwich (not East Dulwich specifically). None of this ranting answers the question and perhaps "The most important (deceased) person associated with East Dulwich" surely was the bloke with all the dogs on a hill separating us from Camberwell and the Jenny's (Eclair and Agutter).

What was Unwins - Forest Hill Road
Chase Dulwit replied to Marmora Man's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I was friends with Gerry and Tony Lavelle who managed that branch throughout the 70's (moved to Hove branch in eighties). Inside was tiny, as well as the flat above; so god knows what they can squeeze in there - an estate agency?? -
Did Bon (not Ben)Scott of AC/DC live in ED? I was a fan of theirs and at the time of his death (1980) was living in Woodvale. I remember hearing that he died outside 67 Underhill Rd, in a friends car whilst visiting the area. Officially the story goes: On February 19, 1980, Bon Scott passed out after a night of heavy drinking in a Camden club now known as KOKO London, and was left in a car owned by an acquaintance of his named Alistair Kinnear. The following morning, Kinnear rushed him to King's College Hospital in Camberwell, where Scott was pronounced dead on arrival

Well it's more a small 'super' market nowadays
