  1. Ok, I'll bite. It depends on what you are after (and budget) but our favourite is Forza Wine. We went when it was cold and dark, but it's a rooftop location so should be even better if it's sunny and bright. Link to review below. There's also a recent review on the site of 139 Fika which was pretty good. I'd say it was in Bellenden but they say it's in Peckham (maybe because it makes it sound cooler!). https://open.substack.com/pub/eatsdulwich/p/restaurant-review-forza-wine?r=8oe6m&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&showWelcomeOnShare=false
  2. Do I get any bonus points for seeing Carter USM's previous band Jamie Wednesday? (I think Newtown Neurotics were mates of Atilla - part of the Harlow anarcho-punk scene).
  3. do you mean this? https://send.royalmail.com/ Not sure if you can do it on the phone but if you follow the online link it gives lots of different options such as tracked delivery for different prices. You need to put basic details in to get to prices page.
  4. Apologies if this has already been mentioned as it's a very long thread. While it would be a great shame if post offices closed down for people that need them, is everyone aware of this service? I didn't know about it until this week. https://send.royalmail.com/ I had to send a small package and it was difficult for me to leave the house so i ordered online for the item to be picked up - it was £3.35 for a small package so i don't think significantly pricier than if I'd done it over the PO counter. And it was totally seamless, I didn't even have to print a label they bring one to your door to stick on when they collect the package. Highly recommended.
  5. Following the recommendations on this thread here I went to Watsons last night. Review to follow. i'm not going to post review link here as it'll start to look like I'm spamming EDF if I post every review! You'll have to subscribe. Did I mention it's free to subscribe? link is here: https://eatsdulwich.substack.com/
  6. There are so many variables. Good chefs can having bad nights, post-Brexit staff shortages, your dish might be brilliant, your friend might order something that's inedible. In the end I think the best option is just to go to the restaurant which has the best overall reviews. If all the reviews are bad then avoid, but even if all the reviews are good that's not a cast iron gaurantee.
  7. If you've seen the original longer post then you'll know that you've taken that out of context. I don't charge but didn't feel I even needed to say that – you've made it sound like I do charge and that's why I deleted this part of the post saying I don't charge. When I read back what I'd written it sounded like I was defending myself against criticisms that hadn't even been made so i cut it out. And now you've made that kind of criticism anyway I should've left it in. What do you mean "not charging people to read your reviews of their local restaurants."? You make it sound like i'm sneaking into SE22 from somewhere else. I live here - they are reviews of my local restaurants!
  8. I've not posted any restaurant reviews here for a while, but with the long Easter weekend approaching I thought I'd serve an update. I recently reviewed The Palmerston and elsewhere became involved in a debate about the best pub lunch in SE22. So which ones do readers here currently rate? Yes I know people can just do a search for "Best pub lunch" but as well as new eateries popping up all the time two of the places I've reviewed – EDT and Bishop – have had a reboot since I reviewed them so I'm interested in hearing how they are doing now. Click eats dulwich to read reviews.
  9. If you are referring to me you don't have to pay to read my reviews and I'm not even sure if you have to sign up. If that feels too sinister you can just click on the links as far as I know, but the difference is if you sign up you receive the - free - reviews by email whenever they appear. Quite a useful - free - service I think. I'm not going to spam the EDF every time I run a review, but here's a link to the site as I've run a few new reviews in the last few weeks. https://eatsdulwich.substack.com/
  10. Just to shift the subject slightly, nobody recently seems to have mentioned cost of parking permits (apologies if it has been mentioned, there's a lot of pages!). We've just had our letter asking us to renew our brown waste bins. It is currently £80 a year, double the price it was three years ago. If CPZ comes in is there anything to stop Southwark doubling the price of permits in three years?
  11. Are there no daily collections from post boxes any more? On Wednesday Feb 12 I posted a Valentine's Card in the postbox which is about 20 metres from our house to make sure it arrived by Feb 14 (yes I know I could've put it thru letterbox but that's not as romantic is it). After I posted it I noticed the little metal thingy said "Monday" but I thought this must be a mistake and had not been changed. However, Valentine's Day came and went and no card arrived. In fact it arrived on the following Tuesday, Feb 18 so I'm guessing the Monday collection metal thingy was correct. Has it ever been announced officially that there are no longer daily collections from letterboxes? I remember a time, not even that long ago, when the red postman pat van would pull up at least twice a day, every weekday.
  12. I just find getting a bus all the way from the elephant too stressful. there's either an 'incident' on the bus, or it waits at Camberwell to change drivers (I'm looking at you 176) or to even out the timetable. But as you say each to their own! The Elephant is a real mess at the moment. I think i came out of the other shopping centre exit a couple of weeks ago so it was open then and wanted to get a train but you couldn't get to the overground via the shopping centre, you had to walk all the way round the back, which was even further than the ED bus stop!
  13. It's Blackfriars or Elephant to Herne hill, not London Bridge. You can also get train to Denmark Hill from Elephant so if the timing is right it's a lot faster than a bus, and then pick up bus from DH. It's awful at Elephant coming out of northern line exit and having to walk all way to Walworth road to get bus.
  14. They posted this on instagram today "The Bishop will be closed for a while today whilst some repairs take place - we will keep you informed of when we will re open" : https://www.instagram.com/p/DGLPlyRtpcK/
  15. Would be interested to hear other views on Maria's Tortilla. New review of somewhere else up today. I was in a good mood when i wrote it- Spurs had just beaten Man U. https://eatsdulwich.substack.com/p/the-cherry-tree
  16. If College Road is from the tollgate to Crystal Palace I did that once - nearly killed myself with a heart attack going up and nearly killed myself freewheeling too fast going back down. Never again!
  17. thanks - sorry if my last post sounded stressed - that's what being a Spurs supporter does to you! I'd also be interested to hear about food in the picture house, though tbh there are so many places nearby for anything from a nibble to a blow out I'd probably head elsewhere unless the PH food is really good.
  18. Some new reviews up since I last posted here. Link below. Just to clarify I'm not a grifter, this is not a con or a scam to defraud the good people of SE22, I'm not flogging anything and even if I was I'm not exactly twisting your arm. If you don't approve don't click. You can donate if you want but you don't have to. Not many donate, though it would be nice of course if more did. I've been a professional writer for over thirty years and I now find I have more time on my hands so have decided to write primarily about things that interest me. If people object they are going to object. One thing I have learnt over those years is you can't please everybody! https://eatsdulwich.substack.com/
  19. Sorry for the delay Sue, I've been meaning to reply to this. As I said previously to other posts, you don't have to pay for my Substack. And you can donate to blogs i think if you want, so there is a similarity to the models (as well as differences, which I expect people here will now point out).
  20. Thanks for your support - subscription to my Substack is completely free - you can read everything I write!
  21. Hi everyone who has subscribed to Eats Dulwich. The response has been overwhelming. However, I've realised I made a rookie error when I set up the new page. I didn't have the paid subscriber button turned on! While the reviews are free to read, a few paid subscribers will help me to make the page better - write more, travel a bit beyond SE22 and also set up exclusive offers and meal deals. Subscriptions start at only £5 a month and you can cancel at any time. If you can upgrade to paid that would be great. But no obligation of course. Any support is really appreciated.
  22. It should be fairly straightforward once you put in your email address - if it's trying to coax you into paying to subscribe that's just the way substack is set up as a default - you have to click on the 'free' box to avoid it. Though everyone is welcome to pay if they want!
  23. link tweaked, it should now keep you away from FB - https://eatsdulwich.substack.com/ Just think of Substack as a blog, remember those? - it's just more user-friendly.
