  1. Viv and I have to give you the SAD NEWS THAT HOOPERS WILL BE CLOSING WITH EFFECT FROM Xmas Eve. Haven't the time to explain the problems of running a profitable pub just now, but you can probaly guess anyway. If you call in, I will be happy to explain a few of the reasons we had to come to this sad decision. We would love to say our farewells to all the customers and neighbours we have become friends with over the last 6 years, so if you want to catch up with us, we will be HERE FROM Thursday 20th from 6pm, and all weekend from 4pm Fri 21st to Sun. 23rd. However it is not our style to go out with a wimper, so we are putting one last gig this Friday, which we think will be of interest both to you. It is the annual Xmas bash of the Nunhead Folk Circle at 8.00pm on Friday 21st Dec. http://nunheadfolkcircle.com/index.html and listen to some of their music on http://nunheadfolkcircle.com/Music.html Think mistletoe, log fires and mulled wine! Plenty to get you in the Xmas mood! We will continue to offer the best in micro-brewed ales to the end, with new Selhurst local brewer, Clarence & Fredericks, as well as Redemption and Burton Bridge all available. There are also some bargains in our foreign bottled beer ranges to be bagged! We wish everyone a very Happy Christmas, and hopefully, dear God, a more prosperous New Year Jamie & Viv Hooper Hoopers 28 Ivanhoe Rd, SE5 8DH www.hoopersbar.co.uk [email protected]
  2. Hi Strafer Jack and hellosailor, Hoopers PUB QUIZ STILL continues. We have a new quizmaster, Steve King, and he is looking forward to meeting all our regular, as well as new players. Starts tonight at 8.30pm!!:)-D
  3. Who else saw Reginald D Hunter perform improntue at Hoopers on Sunday night? Reg was looking for a local comedy gig to do some new material. He was warmly received by the regulars who later were splitting their sides listening to Andrew Lawrence previewing his Edinburgh show. The next gig at Hoopers is on Sun September 3rd with Ben Norris off Mock the Week.>:D<
  4. I happen to know New Road, Brighton, and it is fundementally different to Grove Vale. It is not on a bus route, it is a side street that didn't/doesn't get a lot of traffic. I don't have a problem with that solution at all.
  5. I have alerted the South Camberwell councillors to this thread and asked that work be halted until local residents, not just those that live on Grove Vale, have the opportunity of being consulted. I can see local streets bieng used as ratruns by drivers frustrated at getting through.
  6. Hoopers Bar in Ivanhoe Rd. has Wi-Fi and a good quiz on Thursdays!!>:D
  7. I also want you to know how much you guys are appreciated. Enjoy your break! Look forward to loogging on again when the team resumes in November!:)-D
  8. Hi Guys, I only stumbled on this thread by accident. But as I'm the guv'nor of Hoopers I would like to correct any inaccuracies about showing rugby here. Firstly we are pleased to show any sports short of pro-am waterborne bull-fighting, and customers only have to give us a bell to check if we canshow the game. There are so many sports and different games that we usually just put up a selection. I am very into my rugby, and this summer we not only showed all the Lions games including the mid-weekers, but also some of the Tri-Nations. If there is a Premiership, a Heineken or whatever the Anglo-Welsh is being called this season, we will show it provided that the majority of people can see what they wish on a Sky channel. And here's the rub. Mr Murdoch's Sky is getting ever more avaricious. If a publican has 2 or more TVs, as we do, we can only show 1 Sky channel, unless we cough up even more money to the plutocrat! And this season, after Sky announced, that for once, they wern't going to put up the subscription charges, in September they quietly withdrew Sky 3 from the package most of us buy (to try and force us to buy what they call their Ultimate package). So, to this weekend. Sky is showing just 1 game over the weekend, Saturday teatime, Harlequins v Bath, lovely I thought Bloodgate meets the Cocaine Snorters! (no offence folks!), and then I saw they are showing it on Sky 3. Sky are a law to themselves, as monopolies often are. So very few pubs will be in a position to show a complete Guinness Premiership game this weekend. However we can show highlights of all the weekend's games on Sunday evening at 6.30pm. The good news we willbe showing the Leinster v London Irish Heineken game next Friday 9th at 8pm. Hope some of you guys can make it. Sorry this post is so long!
  9. Hoopers will be showing the Liverpool match tonight, and the Man Utd game tomorrow.
  10. Hoopers will be showing all the 6 Nations matches today (as usual!). There's always a good crowd following the games.Bar snacks will be available to order as well. We will also be showing the Lions tour in the summer. We also have 4 real ales available, 4 draught lagers and around 40 bottled beers and lagers. 11. As an antidote to the credit crunch, Hoopers are selling a real ale throughout January at ?1.99 a pint!, presently it is Brains Party Popper. Hoopers are also offering their traditional Sunday Roasts at ?7.45,or other choices such as Chicken Chasseur at ?6.95. All meats are sourced from William Rose.

    Hoopers beer

I just came accross this thread by chance. Alan still seems to think that I changed the name of the pub for my greater gloriment. Nothing could be further from the truth. When we took over, the locals would not use the place because it had been run antisocially to the extent that when the new licensing act began in 2005, the locals objected to the licence & there was a hearing at the council which ensured that they could not have live music or open later than 11pm. It took at least a year before residents gradually realised that we would run it differently, & work with local people. It was a new broom, and therefore it was an indication that there was a change. Like Mockney, I like traditional names but Ivanhoe indicates tht it was named after the road, which was a lack of imagination on the part of the Victorians. As for the "East Dulwich" on the website, that was he work of the local person living in the next street who set up the website. However we feel part of the East Dulwich community as that is where the local P.O., bank, shops etc. are, and to the point where all the local people hereabouts shop and socialise. It is purely a historical accident where postal borders were placed, and if our local centre happened to be either Peckham or Camberwell, I would be just as happy. When I first arrived I mistakenly assumed that there was an area called Denmark Hill (as opposed to a station or road). I never realised how much it might mean to some people. However no offence or assumption was intended or made. Phew! Now that's off my chest, let's get back to enjoying good beer and good company! A Happy New Year to all our Readers!
  13. Hoopers are holding a NEW YEARS EVE PARTY 9pm-2am with DJ AlexRay We will be having a ticketed party including Buffet. 14. We would just like to say thank you to all the EDF members who came to the drinks at Hoopers last Friday. I was unable to meet you all as it was a very busy night. It seems from the posts since that you all had a good time, & hope we get the chance to meet you when you next visit us. If you have any constructive suggestions on how we can improve on what we are offering, we are always willing to listen! Best Regards Jamie Hooper
  15. Thought you might like to know that Hoopers now has Sky as well as Setanta. This weekend it will be showing on Saturday Arsenal v Man Utd 12.45, England v Pacific Islands & the other Autumn Internationals 2.30, & the Liverpool game 5.30. On Sunday we have the Blackburn v Chelsea game 1.30.
  16. Hi, Hoopers are pleased to advise that our Kitchen will open this Saturday and Sunday from 12 noon to 9.45pm. There will also be a Sunday Roast. The Kitchen will reopen next Wednesday, under French chef Stephane Tierou, with a special offer of a free dessert with each mains ordered, from then until Thursday 24th July inclusive. We are sure that you will agree that Hoopers Kitchen will be a welcome addition to the local catering possibilities, and we look forward to seeing you soon! Real Ales available this weekend are Brains SA, Bradfield Brown Cow, and Harveys Best. Regards Jamie, Vivien & Matt
  17. I have been reading this thread with a big smile on my face. It started last with nutty asking if the pub quiz at Hoopers cut the mustard. He was encouraged to give it a go by Sean & Mr Bojangles. Nutty let you guys and gals know that he had a good time, albeit not as busy as the places on LL. This gave Alan Dale the opportunity to throw his usual disparraging opinions of the place, as well as his well known views on postcodes, effectively saying it is irrelevant where you bank, shop or socilise, you should abide by how the Post Office determined postal areas long before any of us were born. However Alan has obviously got some exciting ideas to make it the most buzzing place in Camberwell, and the envy of those East Dulwichites! So, having spoken to the management, they are willing to allow Alan the opportunity to work with them for a week so that he can start to get his ideas into practice.Hoopers has a Beer Festival starting tonightand if he pops in & makes him self known, they will be pleased to meet him, Now, about that pub quiz....
  18. Hoopers are showing Chelsea v Blackburn tomorrow @ 5.15 and Derby v Newcastle on Monday @ 8. Nice comfortable sofas, as well as seating outside for those who need to drag on the dreaded weed!
  19. I have followed this thread from time to time, and I think the exact line of a postal district delineated a very long time ago, often before important features such as retail & leisure developments changed how the public moved around districts,is less important than where you are focused in seeing as living & working in. We personally bank, shop and(when we get time)relax in ED.So we think that as here ED is closer than Camberwell Green & our closest station is East Dulwich, then that is where we reckon we are. But, hey! what do we know?
  20. Hi to all of you who have either posted messages or read the thread since we have reopened the Ivanhoe (as Hoopers Bar).We hope many of you will take the opportunity next Friday evening(6th)to visit when EDForum meet here. This is my first post,& thought it might be helpful if I could answer some of the comments that have been posted in recent weeks. Firstly, we have commenced opening on Mondays. We are having a speaker system with amp being installed this coming week,& the pub exterior has been repainted. We would like to have live music here in the future & would be interested to hear ideas of what local people might be interested in coming to listen to.I noted as well that some people didn't appreciate that our website (www.hoopersbar.co.uk) said we were in East Dulwich or that we changed the pub's name. Well it was a resident in Bromar Road who set up our website & suggested that we should describe us as ED.We personally rarely visit Camberwell(or Peckham) but visit LL & The Vale most days to do our shopping etc. Also local people didn't appear to have a good word for the old Ivanhoe & we wanted to have a new start to show local residents how we had (hopefully) improved the pub.We enjoy being part of the local community and we look forward to meeting you all.
