  1. Don't forget the Aquarius http://www.aquariusgolfclub.co.uk/pages.php/index.html
  2. I live at the other end of Homestall Road and we've been looking into the ownership of the road. Having spent some time looking for the right person in Thames Water, we have been told by them that while the road is unadopted, it is wholly owned by Thames Water (not part owned by residents as some people had thought). If this is true, and we're assured it is, then you'd have to assume that Thames Water has some legal responsibility - and liability if someone where to, for example, fall and break their arm. We've only just found this out, so the last bit is supposition. We are, however, going to get some opinion on what this might mean and what we might be able to do. I'll keep you posted.
  3. So...our daughter has not been allocated a school in our six choices, but has been given a place in a Catholic school - I am a Protestant, and can't send my daughter to a Catholic school. What do I do? As I understand it I cannot appeal against the school we've been allocated, only those we haven't. And if I refuse the place I believe that there's no obligation for Southwark to allocate us anything. This is crazy, the school is rated good, but is very religious by it's own admission, and there are people queueing up to get into it. We're talking to the admissions team, but none of them seem to know what to do other than the bog standard advice about waiting lists. Any thoughts? There must be some case law around this. Can I expressly demand that if forced to go to the school that my daughter is excluded from all aspects of their religious education? What about the Human Rights Act (I'm clutching at straws.)
  4. Also, I would encourage everyone to complain here. http://www.heathrowairport.com/noise/help/make-an-enquiry It's important, your complaints count, this experiment cannot be allowed to become working practice
  5. Absolutely disgraceful - in the last few weeks my wife and I have been woken every night at 4.30am when - this cannot go on - neither of us can work properly on 5 hours sleep a night.
  6. Brilliant, thanks everyone - the food, the atmosphere and the band were great. The kids were particularly taken by the Routemaster trips down to Peckham.
  7. I have found aggressive dogs to be so much of a problem in Peckham Rye I now drive over to Dulwich Park with my young son despite living less than 10 minutes walk from the park. Yes, there are some problems in Dulwich Park, too, but they're nowhere near as bad. As the owners of these dogs won't take any notice of a law about keeping dogs on leads, I think that a complete ban on dogs on the Rye is the only solution. Perhaps dogs should be walked on the Common where it's much more open and people can see dogs coming. The vast majority of people who use the park aren't dog owners, and of the dog owners it is a small majority that keep aggressive breeds and let them out of control, however, the park is for everyone.
  8. sparrowhawk, seen one in my garden a couple of times, chasing sparrows through the bushes. Great pic.
  9. Asset, If you're in power you're responsible for what goes on, as Labour is learning to its electoral cost. You can't say it would have happened under other parties, because Boris Johnson, for example, supports the plan for a huge new airport in the Thames estuary. If the Tories adopted that in their election manifesto I might actually consider voting for them.
  10. write to or email your MP (Tessa Jowell), complain about the aircraft noise - air traffic over London has doubled since Labour came into power, so they can't claim that it has nothing to do with them. Make it clear how much it impacts your quality of life and if it effects the way you may vote at the next election.
  11. Bring it on I say. A bigger market with a proper fruit and veg stall, some clothes, some more junk would be excellent. Parking round here is, relatively speaking, a breeze, particularly as it would only really be on a Saturday (Friday is less busy).
  12. Great wine shop, with interesting and, in my experience, reasonably priced wine. Never drank in the bar mind.
  13. I've got to check it out. Notable spots this year, are a male sparrow hawk and lesser spotted woodpecker near one tree hill.
  14. second the veggie samosas in Cheeseblock
  15. from what I understand you currently pay more to be closer to the station and LL, however, I reckon this will flatten out when the Tube comes to HOP in 3 years time, then anywhere within walking distance, like Ryedale, will become more desirable, being equidistant from the Tube and LL. The Tube will be 6 stops to the City and, more importantly, 6 stops to Canary Wharf. This will, IMO, change things quite a bit.
  16. happened to me on Saturday, we were in and there was no attempt to knock on the door. Rubbish.
  17. uberdude sorry, meant to ask in the last post. Why have they changed the routes?
  18. uberdude thanks for the info. I live on One Tree Hill and we bear the brunt of this sudden upsurge of traffic, as planes seem to turn round the hill and join a flight path which leads over East Dulwich. I have complained to Tessa Jowell, who is apparently 'looking into the matter', though a few more e-mails with some more authoritative background may well help move things on. The BAA complaints route is evidently a whitewash. Incidentally, this is set to get worse for all of us if the third runway at Heathrow is given the go ahead. The only major party supporting this is Labour.
  19. Anywhere within in easy walking distance of the new East London line, in particular Honor Oak and over the hill to the top of East Dulwich.
  20. shd I agree with you. I work from home and it has changed noticeably in the last month or so.
  21. The walk is fine, usually other people off the train and it's a busy road so it's never felt bad. The wife walks it every day and hasn't had a problem.
