Went to a party in E&C once and the next door neighbour called the police. They popped around and saw that it was a bunch of people having a not-terribly-loud good time, bid us good night and left. About 10 mins later there was banging at the door - it was said neighbour complaining about the noise and that "she had called the police". "We know", I said, "They've just been around. Nice guys". She was not a happy bunny.

Down with this sort of thing. Careful now.

Osborne Scraps Child Benefit For High Earners
Loz replied to DJKillaQueen's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
You want to see the squealing over at the Guardian. One writer, with five children, was complaining that his near-on ?4K of child benefit was a terribly important part of his higher-rate tax-paying income. Benefits should be a safety net, not a bloody bouncy castle. -
Clue: He'll be the one mincing strangely around the Cutty Sark, with one eyebrow raised.

Oh, purleeese. Apart from the fact that the allegations were a bit dubious, the fact that she married a black guy and steered Alexandra Burke to victory shouldn't get in the way of a good playing of the racism card.

Can admin still do IP address checks? Mr Corti and Mr Zippo might be worth a look.

Am I missing something here? Isn't burning gas, where ever it comes from, still pushing CO2 into the atmosphere?

Who side is this on? If I was making a video taking the piss out of the near-fanatical global warming - erm - climate change followers, I wouldn't change much. Not that it's not a good idea to cut down on resource use, carbon emissions, etc, but it is getting to be a bit of a cult.

Don't be a burglary victim - a few tips.

Sue, As someone said, hang a spare key on a hook out of site of the door. Leaving it in the door may invalidate your insurance. -
Surely Lordship Lane is a successful shopping street precisely because it is a vehicle through area? If you were to divert most traffic through, say, Crystal Palace Road how long would LL last?

I got the biggest laugh in that section was from the obviously-planted vox-pop ("Cortina") suggesting that Southwark could merge some services with Lambeth. Gosh, what a surprise that a random person plucked off the street would suggest something that lines up exactly with a contentious manifesto policy of the new council!! What are the chances, eh? At the very least they could rename it "Southwark Propaganda"

Over population - should births be taxed?

An immigration cap is pointless politics. It can only be applied to non-EU countries and all it will mostly do is block some highly skilled people who are needed in the UK. -

Tumble turns! I used to be really good at them as a kid, but last time I tried one I lost track of which way was 'up'. -
Well they certainly generate a lot of it... (Sorry, James B!)

Do you? I think there is something cartoon-ish about it. During his acceptance speech I kept getting the feeling he was going to end it with a "the-adda-the-adda... that's all folks!"

If you want to see a flood of immigrants, try the south coast of Spain, around Alicante. -
The next leader of the Labour Party (and other matters)
Loz replied to david_carnell's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I think Labour chose the best from what was on offer. His acceptance speech was interesting - when he spoke from the heart he was good, but when he was trawling his way through his speech-writer's "I get it" attempt at something Obama-esque it all got a bit mechanical and turgid. Ed's problem is now to distance himself from the unions. They got him the gig when the MPs and the party preferred his brother. If he doesn't show that he is independent from Woodley and co then Cameron will have a field day. Personally, I think he is likeable and electable, but if he shifts Labour too far left he will drag them into long-term opposition. At the moment, I don't think the Tories and Lib Dems are shaking in their boots, but it will depend on how Ed handles the post-spending review period. David M will be looking back tonight at whether he blew his chance before the election when he should have challenged Brown. I suspect he won't defend his seat at the next election and head off to the City. -
