Information is good, but 'teaspoons' and other vague measurements aren't very informative. Likewise with some of the 'traffic light' stuff you see. I think there should be total calories, plus total and percentage sugar and fat on the front of every product in big, readable type. Taxes are fairly pointless as well. Paying ?1.20 for your Coke instead of ?1 isn't really going to put anyone off.

Blah Blah Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Whilst Corbyn does take the Labour party away from the centre ground, the > Conservatives at present certainly aren't filling it. I think Osborne is having a damn good try. His last budget, whilst being very Tory, still contained more traditionally centre-left elements than any I've seen in the 25 years I've been in this country. Big increase in the minimum wage (much larger than Labour proposed), surcharge on bank profits, reduced tax relief on buy-to-let, abolished permanent non-dom status, levy on firms to fund apprenticeships. No Brown/Blair budget ever went anything like that. It was an obvious play for the centre ground. Having said that, seeing that a proper centrist-liberal party just won in Canada makes me wish there was something like that in the UK. The Lib Dems could have been, but their history made it difficult for them to define exactly where they were in the political spectrum and, anyway, they seem to have hit a rather large speedhump in terms of electability. Labour and Conservative try for the centre ground, but both have to deal with their extreme wings - be it the loony-lefties or the rabid-righties. A true centrist party would be aligning itself with where most of the voters are.

I thought the best version of on the woman on QT's complaint was: "I knew they were going to cut benefits - I didn't think they would cut MY benefits..."

Funniest sentence I've seen on the EDF in a while...! When people ask you about the best thing about the area, the Southwark Recycling Centre is always the first thing that comes to mind. :D

Do your employers give benefits over and above standard maternity leave/pay (quite a few do)? If so, I reckon you'd have a pretty decent sex discrimination case.

Being a home owner has, as far as I know, nothing to do with it. Your rights (including extra Shared Parental Leave) are explained here: http://www.which.co.uk/consumer-rights/problem/im-about-to-become-a-father---what-are-my-paternity-rights

We have a 4-bed (1920's build - three bed + loft extension) and I've got our gas & electric costs down from about ?2000 to under ?1100 for the year. A combination of moving from a poor tariff rate (saving about ?300) and fiddling with the CH controls. Things I did: - In summer, the HW is on for an hour a day, as the tank can keep the water hot for up to three days. We used to have it on for four hours a day (2 hours AM and 2 in the evening) in summer, but the boiler broke down and I discovered that it took a few days before I had to put the immersion heater on. - In winter I have the CH/HW on for two hours in the morning and four in the evening. I am at home during the day and as long as I keep the room doors closed then I only occasionally need to switch the CH on manually (and I am the sort that refuses to wear a jumper in the house!) - Turned the radiators off in the spare room and only turn them on when we have guests. - Moneysavingexpert also had a deal for free sheets of aluminium stuff to put behind the radiators to stop you losing heat to the outside. Not sure how effective these are, but you can't argue with 'free'. - And, as I said before, started turning lights out. Our kitchen, especially, as it has dozen or so recessed ceiling spotlights, each chewing up 40w.
-
Turned the CH on two days ago. I like to hold out for as long as possible, but I finally relented. ?2400 a year is quite a bit, but whether this is 'right' or not depends on two things: your usage and what you pay per unit. Usage: Do you have the CH/HW on all day? Can you lower the usage of the tumble dryer (they are expensive to run)? For gas, what is your summer usage vs winter? Charges: What company and scheme are you on. I was a bit concerned at what we were paying, especially for gas in winter. I adjusted the timer and thermostat settings, plus changed our supplier and have cut the bill quite significantly. Electricity I lowered by turning lights off! (I was really rather bad at this). I looked into putting LEDs in, but decided that the cost/benefit wasn't as good as I'd hoped plus the fact we have a lot of dimmers also put me off this idea.

An alternative to LastPass is KeePass (which I use) - similar systems, but - LastPass is a cloud based system, with your passwords held in the cloud (in SHA256 encrypted form). LastPass is proprietary software. - KeePass uses a SHA256 encrypted local file which I keep on my OneDrive (the cloud storage that comes with Hotmail/Outlook). It's open source and free. -

Check your car insurance - a lot of policies will do the repair free of charge.

Azalea Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Re Loz's car insurancw story, get yourself any > kind of American Express affiliated credit card > and pay for your car hire that way. You will > automatically be insured for free and don't need > to purchase any extra. I didn't need to purchase any either as I had a similar style policy from an insurance company. The point was, they wouldn't accept it. (I see that I phrased it badly in the story - have fixed).

Holiday Extras/Goldcar rentals - car hire. Hired a car in Italy with Holiday Extras - unfortunately you can't see who the final rental company is until you complete, but it turned out to be Goldcar - a company with an online reputation two notches below Adolf Hitler. Being the sort of person who doesn't like paying over the odds, I get a separate insurance agreement with another company (after first checking this was allowable on the contract - it was). Get to Italy, get hire car. Woman on the desk puts full insurance on the contract. Gets me to sign for something else on a e-screen and then prints that signature on the insurance agreement as well! Me: No, I only want the basic - I already have insurance. Her: No, we don't allow that - you must buy the extra insurance. Me: No, I only want the basic - I already have insurance. Her: No, that does not protect us. You must take our insurance. Me: It says on the contract I don't have to. Her: Yes you do. No insurance, no car. Your decision. So I ring Holiday Extras. They confirm I can use my policy. Hand phone to woman who has a huge argument with the Holiday Extras woman. While she is on the phone I notice that just about everyone at the desk is having the same argument. She hands phone back to me and the HE lady says either I can cancel the car (I have a wedding 200km away) or take the insurance and claim it back from HE. I ask her to record the issue on my computer record - she says all calls like this are noted. So I accept the car and the insurance and everything goes smoothly after that. Until it came around to claiming the money back. I ring HE, explain the issue. Person on line records my complaint and my claim - incorrectly. Get email saying I can't cancel insurance after the car hire has been taken - case is closed. Ring HE, tell then to re-open case and explain again. Get email back telling me I signed to accept the insurance - case is closed. I ring them telling them to re-open the case and escalate it to a senior manager. Get email back telling me I signed to accept the insurance - case is closed. Notice that this email has a name - so ring HE and ask to speak to that person... and I get through. Explain everything. Get email back to say Goldcar have rejected my claim - case is closed. Ring same person at HE, tell then to re-open case and tell them I don't accept it, check the call file again. Get email back telling me case is closed. Ring same person at HE, tell then to re-open case and tell them I don't still accept it and want to keep my case open, escalating further if necessary. Get email from HE saying they have met with Goldcar and they will refund my insurance money. Oh, and the case is closed. Sometimes, you just have to be perseverant...

If you buy any non-qualifying item then you get charged. Unusually, the Mail is right - the fine print is a bit stupid. There is a quiz on exemptions at the bottom of this page, and the answers are really not obvious. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-34346309 And look at it this way Foxy. Before, Tescos gave out bags for free, but gave you 1 point (or 0.5p) to reuse. Now they charge 5p for bags, but you pay nothing if you re-use. So, you are still 4.5p up if you reuse your bags now.

Maybe, maybe not. Lacquer scratches look white, but the undercoat may be white as well. Try wetting it - if it looks OK, it's probably just the lacquer.
-
Paint on cars is generally made up of two layers - a colour layer and a top lacquer coating. If just the top coat, then you can usually t-cut it down and maybe apply a new layer of lacquer (you can get it at Halfords). If you've gone through the colour layer, you're best to get a paint touch-up expert in.
