  1. Of course not. The work was done. The bill will be paid on time. But both parties should act in accordance with the law. I'm not familiar with commercial laws and was just wondering if the clause on the invoice was technically allowed.
  2. I received an invoice from a local builder recently that said interest would be charged for late payment. My research tells me this isn't legally binding. Just wondered if anyone had any thoughts on this? At the bottom of the invoice it says: PLEASE NOTE: We will exercise our statutory right to claim interest and compensation charges for debt recovery costs under the LATE PAYMENT OF COMMERCIAL DEBTS (Interest) ACT 1998, as amended and supplemented by the LATE PAYMENT OF COMMERCIAL DEBTS REGULATIONS 2002 if we are not paid according to agreed credit terms. The law says 'this Act applies to a contract for the supply of goods or services where the purchaser and the supplier are each acting in the course of a business'. http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1998/20/section/2 The phrase 'acting in the course of a business' I gather means that the business can charge other businesses or public sector customers interest - not individuals. See here: http://www.lawdonut.co.uk/law/contracts-disputes/debt-recovery/interest-on-late-payments This site says: 'Every business has a statutory right to charge late-paying business or public sector customers interest. The right does not apply to sales to consumers.' And as payontime.co.uk says: 'the legislation [the commercial debts interest act] only applies to business to business transactions' http://payontime.co.uk/common-misconceptions-about-the-late-payment-legislation Is the builder misunderstanding the law?
  3. I'd like to recommend a stonemason who's just restored the arches on my flat - and on my neighbour's flat - on Melbourne Grove in East Dulwich, above GM hairdressers. He's called Rob Payne and is the consummate professional. He did a fantastic job of restoring arches that were in shockingly bad condition, and for a very reasonable price. There's currently scaffolding and sheeting surrounding them but once it's down i think the whole street will look brighter as a result. He's a really friendly guy and clearly very passionate about his work. He took care to explain the rejuvenation process and even happily gave me and my neighbours extra advice about other building work we were having done. When the arches were chipped slightly from masonry falling down from rendering work at the top of the flats that was being carried out - Rob came round and touched up the damage for free. He works in the stone trade - and this guy's a gem. His website is www.stonerejuvenation.co.uk I've attached before and after pictures of his work. Ted
  4. Hi Looking for a stonemason to restore the arches above my flat on Melbourne Grove - six in all, three pictured - can anyone recommend a stonemason/mouldings expert who might be able to help? Cheers
  5. Just had a quote for timber double glazing from London Box Sash Windows (who are affiliated with Bespoke Windows on Lordship Lane) - was very impressed and tempted to go with them. They seem to have lots of positive feedback, too. But wanted another quote for comparison. Any recommendations? London Box Sash quoted 10k for five windows. Using their best materials.
  6. I've used David Howard from McHow Ltd - 07814833352 - and he was very good. Friendly, keen, knowledgeable. And J A Powers - who fixed a 'fault' over the phone in a very chirpy manner (central heating wouldn't ignite, but turned out i just needed to press a button) - 020 8650 9314. Ted
  7. Anyone read about this? MailOnline: Mother-of-four's horror at discovering maggots infesting her home were a result of a dead body http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2773425/Mother-fours-home-infested-maggots-DEAD-BODY-decomposing-upstairs-flat.html
  8. I'm looking for a good, reliable cleaner to visit my East Dulwich flat once a fortnight. Any suggestions most welcome.
  9. Am in fairly urgent need of a boiler service - can anyone recommend someone to do the job? Live on Melbourne Grove in East Dulwich...
  10. My recycling hasn't been picked up for nearly a month now - anyone else having problems? Mine and my neighbour's blue boxes have been outside our flats on Melbourne Grove for nearly two weeks now... I've emailed and phoned Southwark Council to complain and raised the issue with Cllr Rosie Shimell who has given me various assurances that it will be sorted out, but the problem remains and to be fair to Ms Shimell, she sounds a bit narked at the situation too. It used to be picked up every Wednesday, then for a couple of weeks it mysteriously changed to Tuesdays now it's not being picked up at all. Just annoying as i like to do my bit for planet Earth etc.
  11. I agree whole heartedly and in fact wrote to Southern about it about three years ago. I mean, no one even gets off the train at muggers central, i mean South Bermondsey. NO ONE. Southern replied that it takes ages to change time tables and they have to have meetings with the Transport department etc to do it and that a lot of their timetabling was actually inherited from British Rail. Something does need to be done. East Dulwich is clearly the most important stop on the line - although obviously i'm biased, being a resident - and that should be recognised by the bosses at Southern.
  12. Has anyone else noticed a complete lack of ANY work being done at Denmark Hill train station? I haven't seen a single workman there in the three months the scaffolding and temporary bridge went up. I'm half wondering if they've just run out of money for the project. Oh, hang on, they have managed to cut some trees down. Wow.
  13. I think green and blue alone makes it one of the best high streets in the UK. And tandoori nights.
  14. Has anyone noticed a strange uriney smell at east dulwich station? Like a rabbit hutch that hasn't been cleaned out for ages?
  15. Re fast trains: I meant, from London Bridge... if they ever run a fast train south to east dulwich i will send champagne to Southern Headquarters. Or to Barry.
  16. Hi Barry, First off, well done for being so public spirited and running this very useful thread. My only (small) gripe is the lack of fast services to and from East Dulwich and Peckham Rye. The number of passengers that use South Bermondsey is negligible compared to East Dulwich and Peckham Rye, yet just about every train, every day, stops there - as if it's the most important stop in south London. And they get Victoria trains to boost frequency, too. Is it not possible to have just one or two fast trains that zoom straight to East D or Peckham Rye during peak hours? Is this something you can raise with someone? I don't know - the Controller of Where Trains Stop - or whoever? Anyway, again, top stuff, Barry
