  1. yes that's Sainsburys park. I complained loads of times when we used to see rats in the kids playground and they never once responded. Dire.
  2. lol I look in at a frugal living forum and there are folk there carrying on like the world is ending. Some of them have 6 months of supplies stashed, wind up torches, candles. I'm banking on sending my 10 yr old to the Spar - she's tough - I reckon we'll be fine
  3. Two kids and a dog huh? Hope you pay her incredibly well
  4. Peckham is every Sunday morning
  5. on another site someone commented to me that this device will quickly be replaced by a version with a backlight and/or a wifi connection

    Google Chrome

Yes - I got fed up of firefox' current rash of problems so I downloaded chrome yesterday. Interesting browser - quite different to firefox and IE. It might get annoying after a while with its page of frequently visited sites - but then again I haven't played around with the settings at all yet. Definitely worth a punt.
  7. Worked well for me today. Rang late morning about something for one of my kids. Got a call back within the agreed hour. The guy who called back decided she needed to be seen so gave me an appointment for this afternoon. When we got there, all was running smoothly and we were seen bang on time.

    Clare Island

well Clare Island was gorgeous. We managed to hit a week when the weather was boiling hot and had lovely long med-style evenings on the beach. Bit of a schlep to get there, but not too bad and everyone along the way super nice and helpful. My 10 yr old was hugely jealous of the Clare Island kids who spend their summer on the beach. The 10 yr old in our B&B would put on a wetsuit at about 9pm every evening, climb over her back wall, walk along the jetty and jump in the sea. Loved Grace's castle and the kids really locked onto the story about her sailing all the way round to the Thames to meet Elizabeth 1 and do political deals. We visited the 12th C abbey where she's thought to be buried - it's got the highest level of gov't cultural protection but as it's on a remote Mayo island, you get the key from under the mat of a cottage nearby and put it back when you're finished! Slightly sad thing was that my small daughter, 8, asked me why the Irish kids don't say anything to you about looking at them. She's really used to the aggressive London kid "why are you looking at me" and she has learned to be careful about looking. She said it was lovely that the kids on the island just talked to her without any hassle.....
  9. Suspect not local as he missed the angle on Camberwell Baths.
  10. Town called malice - Jam
  11. Taming of the shrew at the Globe 2ish years ago was amazing And has anyone mentioned the free theatre they've done in the Scoop the last few years? Really good productions of Jungle Book and Cyclop.
  12. yes of course it's racist to call people sushi and curry. I hope she has a great line in "you're the shit on my shoe" looks for folk like that
  13. Seymours tea rooms at the bottom of Grove Lane
  14. My family are from West Cork but I'm tempted to transfer my loyalty to Clare Island - can't believe how lovely it is. So that's another song - Clare Island, Saw Doctors
  15. Clare Island, Co Mayo - heading back to the mainland tomorrow and to London on Sunday. Been to see Grace O'Malley's burial place this morning. It's a Cistercian abbey with important 12th century drawings. Went the other day and it was all locked up and no indication as to how to get in. But today there was a woman coming out with a key and I asked if I could have it and she just handed it over and showed me the doormat to leave it under when we were done!
  16. Sonny's Dream - Christy Moore. Am in Ireland and getting ready to come home and turned all maudlin without the aid of alcohol!
  17. 99 posts for a mad thread. Wow - shouldn't he get a prize? I think we should find out where he lives and plant a surprise orchard. We could get the guerilla gardener to venture down from the Elephant to do the dangerous bits. Yeah it's a plan
  18. lol I don't work there - haven't got the patience for such a long slow entryism tactic! I agree that it's limited but on the other hand less poncy than the Slow Food Market, which I visited last time it was at the South Bank ?1.50 for a pain au choc.
  19. I go for the rosemary and olive oil bread most weeks, pain au choc when my kids are along, and yesterday an unbelievably good sirloin steak. The veg stall have usually got herbs for what 1/4 the supermarket price.
  20. Their role is to be all things to all people and since that's clearly impossible, they end up doing what they judge most valuable. Being seen walking up and down Lordship Lane probably ain't it. I guess her role in the new Harris Boys deserves more attention. It does appear that delivering a school at any cost was her objective, which contributed to the cocktail of political pressure on this issue. Wouldn't it have been great if she had been able to use her muscle for a more popular outcome?
  21. And what would happen if we all decided to get behind this school....?

    Clare Island

Never got beyond Galway before but very drawn to the west coast.
  23. When I was a kid taken for self sufficiency summers in Ireland, the badgers always used to come and eat the beetroot. Hated beetroot so like badgers. We also used to have to boil crabs even when they pathetically beckoned for help over the end of the pot. Thank goodness for Ocado.
  24. Martha Stewart hanging around Lordship Lane all day. Think she's looking for Jacqui Smith's place to talk passport control policy.
