It is my understanding that the services which the Crown post offices on this list (such as the one in Lordship Lane) presently provide would be transferred to new sub post offices such as those that already exist in shops. So services such as posting parcels would not disappear. They would just be provided in additional suitable locations (eg shops) locally. Or possibly parcel lockers, though I don't know how those work in terms of posting rather than collecting parcels. The Post Office obviously needs to look at all suitable alternative options which would be cheaper for them than continuing to have dedicated (?) premises which are running at a loss. Bear in mind that all this is at a very early stage. I'm not convinced that a petition signed by individuals is the best way to influence the decision makers, who one hopes will be taking all factors into account and consulting relevant interest groups anyway. Probably making your feelings known to your MP or councillor would be likely to carry more weight. But what would I know.

What percentage of total transactions are cash transactions? A "rise of 7%" doesn't mean anything without some indication of what the starting figure was, and how it compares to non cash transactions. And I'm also interested to know what percentage of older people "rely on their local post office for cash"? I'm now by some hideous mischance nearer 80 than 70, and I haven't "relied on cash" for years, let alone relied on my local post office for it. I'm pretty sure I'm not some statistical anomaly! I carry emergency ten and five pound notes for the rare occasions when I might need cash. Even the Big Issue sellers take card payments now. There will always be a few people who hang on to the old ways. If progress was halted because of them, we would still be in the stone age. There are, or used to be, free classes to teach older people about computers and the internet, and basic smart phones are relatively cheap. But I'm not sure what that has to do with having a bank card. Have I misunderstood your post?

Unfortunately unless there has been a cancellation, a good stylist is not likely to be available at short notice and may be fully booked for weeks ahead! I remember punched cards! And the uni computer taking up a whole room! And the results of a simple statistical test on your data being returned to you (along with the box of punched cards which you had spent hours punching) on a long piece of paper with error error error on, and having to go through all the cards to find the error/s before you could get the test redone. And this sometimes happening several times before you actually succeeded in not having any errors, and got the actual test results on the long piece of paper. And the terrible fear of dropping the box of cards and getting them in the wrong order. Those were the days (not). ETA: I stopped putting my date of birth on job applications long before age discrimination became illegal, after I wasn't shortlisted for a job when the only possible reason could have been my age. Not in IT, I hasten to add. I tried to learn Fortran once. My brain encountered some sort of barrier around the third lesson 🤣

Age discrimination is illegal, but like other forms of unfair discrimination still happens, because if an employer doesn't want to employ someone they can usually find some other "reason" unrelated to their actual ability to do the job. As said above, definitely don't put your age or date of birth on applications, and don't give dates of education, qualifications or past employment (unless recent) either, as all those could give away your age as well. Stick to stating how you meet the person spec, or if there isn't one, how you meet the requirements of the job you are applying for. Also, tailor your application to the particular job/company, don't just use something which could apply to any employer. And include a brief covering letter saying why you want this particular job and why you think you are ideally suited to it, eg say how much you love their shop and why 😀 Good luck! Don't take rejections or lack of replies too personally, btw. Employers are often inundated with applications. Yes it's rude not to reply to every applicant, but sometimes it just may not be possible, especially for a small company. ETA: You could try approaching suitable shops etc directly, even if they are not advertising a vacancy, saying why you would like to work for them, and asking them to consider you if a job comes up. Then your application won't be lost amongst loads of others. Also, there is a book called "What colour is your parachute?" which you might find useful. It is revised every year, but you can find second hand copies online very cheaply, and the basic advice doesn't change from year to year (though things like employment legislation might do). I think it is American, but again, even if there isn't an English version, the basic advice is the same.

Forgive me if I misunderstood. I asked you if the pharmacist had diagnosed what was wrong and you said no, you had, you were a grown up and knew your body. If you did not in fact self diagnose, I wouldn't have expressed my concern on here, nor the reasons for my concern.

I find the self diagnosis thing a bit worrying. I once nearly died because a hospital doctor misdiagnosed a ruptured ovarian cyst and peritonitis as food poisoning. It was lucky I hadn't initially diagnosed it as food poisoning myself and assumed the sickness and pain would go away. I called my GP, who called an ambulance. I ended up having an emergency operation in a different hospital, the first hospital not having scanning facilities (this was in the olden days) 🙄

😮 I hope your pain has gone and you are feeling a lot better. I'm a bit surprised a pharmacist would just give out antibiotics to someone who had diagnosed their own need for them! Hopefully I have misunderstood, and the questions he asked you served to confirm your diagnosis.

Did the pharmacist diagnose the kidney infection?

Long shot, but is this jaw condition even remotely connected with teeth? Because the department of restorative dentistry at Kings dental hospital is brilliant, and your dentist could refer you there (on the NHS) which could possibly be a first step to being referred for treatment elsewhere?

Also, I once spilled a glass of wine over a laptop and gave it to someone because I thought it was dead. It certainly seemed to be. A long time after, I discovered that the laptop had miraculously recovered! This was a bit annoying as it wasn't actually mine, and I had had to replace it (my own fault, obviously).

Perhaps read my posts properly. I didn't ask for evidence of levels of crime in London. To the best of my recollection, I asked you to provide comparative statistics for levels of crime in similar urban areas nationally and internationally. I will ask you again. Do you have those statistics? And to the best of my knowledge I never asked for "bits which relate to London/UK" to be removed. What a very strange thing to say. I presumably meant that your post wasn't specifically related to SE22, which posts in this section of the forum are supposed to be. You seem to have a bee in your bonnet about crime in London. Why do you still continue to live here if you think it is such a very dangerous place? You seem to go around deliberately looking for signs of crime. Why not start appreciating all the good things about living in London, instead?

It's impossible to have a reasoned discussion without comparative stats from other similarly sized urban areas inside and outside the UK. This thread was supposed to be about parcels stolen from doorsteps in SE22. Admin, is it time it moved to the lounge? Or at least, the posts not relevant to the thread topic?
