Why be so nasty? Why shouldn't this money be used for art to make an area more interesting and pleasant to live in? And what's with the snidey "unemployed" reference? http://www.southwark.gov.uk/info/200256/cleaner_greener_safer

  3. jamescpr90 Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Many years ago we had two excellent greengrocers > in Lordship Lane. xxxxxx Yes, and Sainsbury's opening put them out of business. As it did a couple of local butchers - including one in North Cross Road, if memory serves.
  4. James Riley, absolutely ace guitarist, was at The Pyrotechnics Arms in Nunhead last night, though doing mostly covers rather than what I've heard him do before - because it was a pub gig I guess. Apparently they have live music most Saturday nights (but I think not next Saturday). Never been in there before - they have a great choice of music on the juke box, too, including loads of blues!

And where would they put the stall so that neither the stall nor its customers would get in the way of the chairs and tables where people were sitting outside the cafe, which I would have thought were a major part of the cafe's attraction, particularly in the Summer? Also a stall would not hold anything like the selection of produce which the shop currently has, so I can't see how it would bring in much income. Plus, many customers would probably prefer to do all their fruit and veg shopping in one place which has all that they need to buy, which they can probably do now at Pretty's but probably couldn't from a stall.

  7. worldwiser Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Did the council actually review the visual impact > they have when they instituted them? xxxxxxx When the hideous bright blue bins were introduced, I put exactly that question to the council manager in, er, question at one of the council meetings. In person. The answer was no, they hadn't. Despite the fact that there is a council department responsible for the appearance of streets, apparently bins are not included in said appearance, and there was no liaison whatsoever. I think that the people taking these decisions live in houses where the bins can be concealed, and just put out on collection days. Therefore they don't give a s**t for people who have nowhere to keep their bins except at the front of their house, with the consequent dreadful effect on the visual environment, or whatever the jargon is :( James Barber may remember the meeting - he was there too.
  8. fl0wer Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > There seem to be several sizes of brown caddy, and > plenty of unused ones litter the streets in ED. > xxxxxxx There are two sizes - smaller for inside, larger for outside. They are often "littering the streets" because they are quite light, and if empty may get blown away in the wind. At least, mine has been several times - retrieved each time some distance away from its usual resting place :)
  9. Peckhamrye Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > As it has already been sold I would think it is > too late to go down the community asset path? xxxxx Don't know a lot about it, but the Ivy House had already been sold to a developer before it was made a community asset, although the English Heritage listing may have been more relevant in their case, not sure. Sorry don't have time at the moment to check this out, but I'm sure somebody will know or have more time than me to look it up. ETA: I also don't know what the criteria for a "community asset" are, but regardless of size etc I would have thought it was at least worth checking out?

Huggers Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Because it is slim I have now pushed my bins to > the end of the front bit that's furtherest away > from front door so it doesn't look so horrible. It > doesn't look half as bad as the full size. xxxxxx Thanks, I might consider this, I have a separately accessible space for my bins, also in the bit furthest away from the front door! I'll have to measure up. Could keep the blue bin always at the back except on recycling collection days. Or maybe I could cover it with something to hide the hideous blue. Like that lovely (joke) leafy fablon or whatever it's called these days :)
  11. rahrahrah Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Probably a long shot, but would it be possible to > have it listed as a community asset? xxxxx The Ivy House team might be able to advise on this?
  12. rahrahrah Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Good luck to them. At a time of 'housing shortage' > its scandalous to leave properties empty and > inactive for so long. xxxxxx Completely agree
  13. Huggers Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Ive now got a slim blue bin and it s more discreet > than the overspilling boxes I had. xxxxx Is that the same size as the small green bins, Huggers? I suppose it's too much to hope for that it's dark blue instead of bright blue? The council did say that they would move to a less bright blue when new bins were ordered, but when on earth is that likely to be? Never, probably, unless they're biodegradable .....
  14. lane lover Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > > I find the green bin is too big as well. The size > of the blue one (while unsightly) is required. xxxxxxx You can get a smaller size green bin (it's larger than the small brown bins, but quite a bit smaller than the ordinary green bins). Just ask the council. They'll take the old green bin away. The blue bins are absolutely hideous, so I have two boxes instead, which are at least dark blue rather than bright blue. However they're often not big enough, epecially at Christmas with all the paper and bottles .... But there is no way I am having a bright blue bin, it's bad enough seeing all the others down my street :(
  15. Well I don't recall the Drum ever having live music - I remember the lock-ins though :))

  17. Otta Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Is the landlord the booker? If so, he's annoyingly > difficult to nail down. xxxxxx No idea. I was there as a punter, not a promoter. Wouldn't want to deal with him if I was trying to put on a gig there, though :))
  18. Robert Poste's Child Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > In my tiny garden there were three robins. Very small stage, though, IIRC? Though it's a few years since I've been there. Glad it wasn't just me the landlord had a go at :))
  21. Neil/Dani Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Windmill Brixton, hands down the best venue in > these parts. Voted 3rd best venue in London 2012 xxxxxx Grumpy landlord though, unless he's recently changed :)) Who voted it 3rd best venue, and why? I've been there a few times and didn't think it was that great.
  22. Please read my post above. As soon as I have time I will look things up. And yes, take it as an insult if you like, it was also a true statement of my position. Anybody reading through this thread can see how many times you insulted me, but maybe that doesn't count. Anyway post away now, because I have other rather more rewarding things to do today :)
  23. I am getting ready for a gig tonight, and I'm also trying to put together our new website. If you have more time than me, then I expect you can google and find some results online, or reference to them. Parapsychology is about more than "psychic dogs" and "haunted buildings", but hey feel free to spread disinformation. Once I have some free time, I will have a look. And clearly intelligent people think they are likely to find positive results, or they would hardly spend time doing research. And funding bodies would not pay for it. You don't embark on research expecting to disprove a hypothesis, at least not in my experience.
  24. We've got Reg Meuross coming to The Old Nun's Head tonight, in the room upstairs. He's a fantastic singer-songwriter, and he's just won a FATEA award for Best Male Vocalist 2013. Details in the "What's On" section. http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/read.php?6,1245415 ETA: Was a great night! Sold out! We hope to book him for The Ivy House in the future - larger venue :)

Why > can't we go for it properly if we want a market, > close the road off and invite local trades people > to setup stalls along the whole road? xxxxxx Yes, I don't understand this really, though I can see there would be difficulties for vehicles if the whole road was closed. A while ago there was supposedly a push by the council to get more stalls into the NCR market, wasn't there, but it doesn't really seem to have expanded that much. And if I recall some people who wanted stalls were not allowed them on the basis that "there is already a shop selling that in Lordship Lane" - yet there is a cheese stall, despite being a specialist cheese shop just round the corner. And a bread stall, despite there being many LL shops selling bread. So how does the council decide who can have a stall and who can't? Does anybody else remember that thread?
