  1. Absolutely gutted to hear this. Such a big fan of both branches. As others have said, best coffee in ED and Peckham, best Bostocks (only Bostocks!), anzacs, morning buns, and the bread. Such a shame for the Zenoria Street site, which has been packed to the rafters at weekends and many other times besides. Congrats to the owners for making it work this long.
  2. It sort of depends what time of day you're going. If it's likely to be early, ie. when roads are quiet, I'd generally go along the A2 to Greenwich and Blackheath, then through Blackwall Tunnel then straight up the A12 past the Olympic Park. If it's after say 10ish on a Sunday when roads likely to be busier, I would personally go down through Peckham, across the Old Kent Road through Bermondsey and through Rotherhithe Tunnel - then take the A13 out until you hit the North Circular (A406) at Barking, then up there a little bit to the start of the M11. I go to the M11 on the way to the North East quite a lot, and find I do the second of these routes much more as tends to be quicker in busy traffic. Either way I wouldn't be tempted to go across Tower Bridge, or go out across Dartford. Both much longer. ETA: Worth also downloading Waze - I find cross referencing the Waze data (real time user generated traffic) with Google Map and my in car nav gives me a fair indicator :)

  4. It's a shame but three's been a good gallery pop up in Bias for the last week or so with some nice stuff in. Bias will be missed though - some nice stuff in there and really good value perfumes etc, much cheaper than other shops on Lordship
  5. It?s still pouring out today with half the road ripped up around it. It?ll be iced all over the place tomorrow morning.
  6. I'm with James Barber on this one. I understand why councils are wanting to offset the Tory Government's austerity drive by reaping money from events on their parks - but London parks should be for all. The disruption of the events - particularly in terms of the closed parts of the parks and the inevitable damage and rubbish (it will be cleaned from the park as part of the contract, but not the surrounding streets) is unlikely to be outweighed by any positive benefits from the local people who use the park regularly. More free park community events, eg Peckham Rye Festival - but not mass events. As others have pointed out, Hyde Park has the scale and infrastructure to cope, Peckham Rye is a vital green lung for the benefit of the people who live in tightly packed housing around it. Let it breathe, not be cut off by fenced off events - nor full of pissed up festival goers pissing in gardens nearby. And, noise control guarantees don't work. The bass reverberations from Sunfall at Brockwell could be heard as far as Peckham (for eg). If you've ever tried calling Southwark noise control you will know how completely under-resourced it is to deal with any kind of noise issue, especially in the evenings.
  7. I?ve always been a big fan of Brick. I like their Bostocks and their coffee?s good. I also see a lot of people in there with kids who often maybe cross the line a bit in terms of the kid?s behaviour. That said Ive also been I also have two kids and my two year old likes to scream everywhere she goes, without rhyme or reason. Normally I choose not to take her out to cafes and restaurants for that reason, though if I am out in a public place (eg bus, plane, cafe) and she?s kicking off, I?ve been known to react badly to people who ask me to control her. Who knows what the exact circumstances were. What is for sure is that East Dulwich and the surrounding environs will always be home to lots of people with kids. And kids like to cry. And probably, IMO, not the most ideal public relations move by Brick to give such an EDF baiting line as ?this isn?t a creche?. But hey, I still like their Bostocks and coffee, so I?ll probably go there. But without my kids. And I still maintain that people without kids are less hassle than the coffee shop liggers on their Macs who sit in cafes like Brick for half a day buying just a coffee. The good thing about people with kids is they?re likely to be in and out in 45 mins tops...
  8. We've had two invasions in the last few months, though I think we do have a dead thing somewhere under the floor boards. Unfortunately we have put engineered flooring on top so there's no getting to it - but you could see the flies emerging from tiny gaps around door frames. Pretty grim. One of the downsides of old Victorian terraces.
  9. We've been at the Belham since the start with our son and he absolutely loves it. I think the quality of teaching has been excellent and, despite some delays getting the refurb on the building complete, the full school building will be open next year and I think it's going to be a fantastic environment for them.
  10. Took my six year old to Paine and Hunter recently on Lordship Lane and they were great. He loved the whole experience of having his eyes tested there.

  12. It should be reopened for the simple reason that the closure creates a far greater negative impact on a greater number of local people than are benefited. Essentially, the re-routed traffic bottle necks down Lyndhurst Grove, Lyndhurst Way and onto Bellenden and up via Maxted / Adys or Avondale / Danby / Choumert - adding to already bad congestion and pollution in those areas, which include several schools. The beneficiaries mainly seem to be the residents of the top half of Camberwell Grove and perhaps Grove Park / Grove Hill Road. Vote for it to be reopened for the benefit of more of society!
  13. Someone tagged the Walter Kershaw mural on the corner of Choumert Road / Bellenden Road last year. I think there's a big divide between the origins of graffiti as an art form and crap tags done by a 14 year old.
  14. I liked it. And I suspect it will have a resale market. It would definitely sell for more than the cost of the land plus build costs.
  15. This is ludicrous suggestion. The Dartford service is packed out each day from Peckham Rye and Denmark Hill. Without those services, we will loose any link into the west side of central London from the area. The framing of that paragraph would indicate that there is no attention being paid to the impact on zone 2/3 commuters - and this is entirely an exercise in pleasing the Tory-voting suburban commuters. There has been no obvious literature at the stations pointing to this consultation - probably because there is no coherent collaboration between Southern and SouthEastern. Renata - is there anything that you can do to contact the Mayor's office to stimulate any noise on this around the closing of the consultation? This whole thing stinks of a political exercise by the DfT
  16. There will be chaos at stations like Peckham Rye if they even begin to think about reducing Thameslink or Victoria services. There is dangerous overcrowding already on platform 3 and 4 in peak hours.
  17. If you're near the Bellenden Road area, Village Grocer has a fairly decent range in the ?6-12 bracket. The General Store does some lovely wines, but they're much pricier. Flock and Herd does a good little selection including a very reliable Rioja and a nice Rose. Or yes, the short five min walk to Lordship Lane is the way forward

I do think it leaves the door open for the consolidation of services. It would be a nightmare for the commuters from Peckham Rye and Denmark Hill if the direct and regular route into Victoria was moved. Anyone who uses that regularly will be able to attest to how busy it is. All of this plays into the argument (which Grayling doesn't want to hear as it's would cede power to Sadiq Khan) that suburban metro services should all be consolidated under the running of TfL - which is run on a non-profit basis to achieve the optimum services. Instead we'll be stuck with another joke of an operator (probably one of the existing ones like Govia-Thameslink) trying to milk it for all it's worth.

  20. I'd definitely recommend e-tyres if you have a puncture. I've had them out a few times to replace tyres and repair them. Lovely guy who normally comes, and very trustworthy - he recommended repair over fitting new one. Much easier than going into kwik fit or similar

At the moment it filters left into Lyndhurst Grove (for those who have turned up Camberwell Grove); or it goes along Peckham Road and turns right up Lyndhurst Way. Either way, it ends up at Bellenden Road where the junctions around Chadwick Road, Choumert Road and Danby are now a safety hazard (more than they were already). It would be 'fab' if people used alternative means of transport, but unfortunately the public transport infrastructure is creaking already - particularly rail. Idealism is great, but I think we need to look for practical and realistic solutions.
  22. As others have said, massive queues last night. All the feeder roads, eg Chadwick, Lyndhurst, blocked. Whoever's responsible needs to sort it out quickly as the situation is exacerbated by the Camberwell Grove closure

  24. Not surprising given that many trucks try and squeeze over it on fairly regular basis so the bridge is probably failing. It would not surprise me if the six months turns into a permanent closure. A boon to the residents of Camberwell Grove, but a massive pain for anyone living around Bellenden - which was chaos last night thanks to the through traffic being rerouted down and along Lyndhust, then up via Bellenden, Maxted, Adys etc, rather than up the Grove and then Dog Kennel Hill.
  25. It's good that someone's using it - it's a great space for a restaurant. If the food's good, should do well.
