Cycle Route to Elephant and Castle
jimmyraj replied to Nick1962's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Cycled that route for a couple of years and never seen any sign of 'ropes across the path' etc - sounds like an urban scare story. Usual common sense rules apply and there are always exceptions with groups of young lads etc, but never experienced any myself. If you'd rather avoid the canal route, I take the Southampton Way, Wells Way, Portland Way route. Always been fine for me. Enjoy the brutalist sixties architecture on the way! -
I prefer to go Tulse Hill, Streatham Hill, down the back of Balham, cut across Trinity Road, Garratt Lane, Plough Lane, up through Wimbledon Village and onto the A3 there. Convoluted but better than joining the A3 at Oval and sitting in traffic through Clapham Junction and Wandsworth.

Seeing as there is constantly people saying that if you're in SE15 then you're in Peckham - you could rightly say that the end of Ondine Road is in Peckham (SE15) in which case it's only a matter of metres. Where does Peckham stop and ED begin - you could debate the world away on this topic. I live on Choumert Road (the top end near Copleston), which is in Peckham. If I walk approx 400m along the road I am in East Dulwich. I rarely pass a border patrol, but sometimes wish that I did. In terms of the centre of Peckham, I think the actual proper Peckham centre is the north of Rye Lane, essentially where it intersects with Peckham High Road? Although I will wait to be corrected.

Sounds like you have a dodgy camera - it should just work straight away.

I've not done the overnight to Barcelona but I've taken the train to the south of France a few times - mostly Eurostar to Lille or Paris then changing to TGV. Great way to travel. Also used the direct ski train to the Alpes which is amazing - get on at St Pancras and seven hours or so later get off at Moutiers at the foothills of the Alpes and half an hours drive from loads of resorts. Train travel wins hands down over air travel - it's the cost which makes it slightly annoying...

What is going on at Copleston Road/Grove Vale junction?
jimmyraj replied to burty's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
The narrowing of the road seems really strange. As a cyclist navigating it daily and turning right into Copleston Road, I've found there's not enough room to safely indicate right and not be almost knocked off by traffic coming in either direction. Don't understand the logic behind it at all. -
E.D.Station controlled parking zone
jimmyraj replied to joobjoob's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I don't understand why the CPZ consultation doesn't cover Quorn Road, opposite the station. As far as I'm aware that has no parking restrictions yet isn't part of this and is probably the nearest road after Melbourne Grove. -
I have to say, in support of the Lanes SNT, I've had cause to call them recently to look into an issue and they were right on it; came to investigate quickly when I called and were really helpful.

Scotia Gas Networks Gas pipe plans
jimmyraj replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I contacted SGN and Southwark to ask why there couldn't be better coordination of street works. On Choumert Rd the street being dug up for the gas networks comes just a few months after Thames Water have finished digging up the same space. The irony, or lack of it, is that it's the same contractors (Morrison Utitiliies) digging the same holes. To be fair SGN at least replied to say it was up to the council and they could do nothing about the lack of coordination. I also asked why Southwark couldn't also coordinate for one or both of them to contribute towards re surfacing the already knackered and dangerous street surface (which is being further knackered by tarmac patches being laid onto loose gravel surface). Despite three emails now and calling them they are ye to reply. Budget cuts are one thing but if these large profit making utiliy companies are messing up already poor road and pavement surfaces would it be too much to ask them to contribute towards street resurfacing... -
More Dogs in Peckham Rye Park
jimmyraj replied to the-e-dealer's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Agreed with Roy of the Rye, the fete was great. Fancy dress dog (big Pirate) was a moment. -
If you're renting, the landlord should be able to provide the rough date as it'll be on the deeds. I'd guess 1990s - fairly modern

is that a banksy on Choumert Rd?
jimmyraj replied to ShinyShiny's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Pretty sure it's not. Same sort of stencil style, but there's loads of similar artists around at the moment. Quite a nice addition though - makes a change from some of the terrible tagging around the vicinity. -
Saw the commotion on Choumert around half midnight last night. About six police cars on our street with dog handlers. Obviously keen to get this guy. Bit spooky after going to bed after watching Luther - was expecting someone to pop up at the window with a mask on.

Mobile Traffic Enforcement - They Have to Go !
jimmyraj replied to Mr.Edwards's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
They're regularly parked up at Peckham Rye - in that spot, which is blocking someone's drive in - looking to catch drivers who have stopped momentarily outside the station to drop someone off. -
Uzzy - what bit of Bellenden Road was it? I cycled down the road on the way to work at about 8.15 this morning - can't recall offhand anyone hanging about at that point.

Constant Bad Smell coming from ally leading to Peckham Rye Station.
jimmyraj replied to Takeshi_Kovacs's topic in The Lounge
I've complained to the environment line before about this, and put Fix My Street alerts on it. As you say, seems to be fly-tipping by some of the shops / parlours around the vicinity. Not a nice sight when you have to step through hair and butchers' waste on the way to work. Keep complaining and hopefully they'll do something about it... -
SE22 Car Insurance cost up 71% from last year
jimmyraj replied to rowerdk's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
You should try having an SE15 postcode - adds about 30% on top of the price for SE22, even though it's only a matter of a street's difference. -
Looks like it's another product of reduced council spending - I've noticed more about recently. Make sure you report it on the council websiteand hopefully they will get to it in the medium term.

I was in Dulwich Park early Saturday and Peckham Rye Park early today. Both suffering from the combo of full bins from a sunny day and foxes having dragged out the contents all over the place overnight / early morning. I'm sure the parkies have it on their to do list, but it's a shame it can't be done earlier before the mess starts to blow around further.

Blue Traveller's Van parked in our street
jimmyraj replied to rubyshoes's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
If someone parks a Rolls Royce Phantom VI outside my house and decides to sleep in it for days; taking up my parking space and taking advantage of the council tax I've paid, I'd definitely rock the car, and maybe poke a few sticks in it - whether it was Charles and Camilla or Bob and Maureen... -
Blue Traveller's Van parked in our street
jimmyraj replied to rubyshoes's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Ok, I was clearly exaggerating but in all seriousness I wouldn't be going round with cake to welcome them to the neighbourhood. I would ask them politely to move on......then start the rocking if they didn't comply. If you want to live in a mobile home, go to a camp site IMO. -
Blue Traveller's Van parked in our street
jimmyraj replied to rubyshoes's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
weird thread this. So people are genuinely suggesting anyone should be able to park up their van outside your house, on a residential street - where there are clearly no facilities for waste water, electricity, rubbish etc - and just live for a few days / weeks /months?? I'm far from a Daily Mail reader, but I would be a bit miffed if someone just decided to camp outside my house - in fact I'd probably not be going round with tea and cakes; I'd be banging on the side and rocking the van until they pushed off. -
I noticed them too - almost blocking my path on the walk home last night. Not good. Will email the SNT now

Trains screeching on Copleston Road
jimmyraj replied to danielgriffiths's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I've regularly seen goods trains on the tracks - they run right across London on most lines. Anyway, back to the issue. I think there's been a slight improvement in noise, but that possibly could be down to the fact it's winter and my windows are generally shut at night. It's definitely an issue that still needs looking at though - possibly not quite as annoying as the early morning flights which seem to be starting around 4am and getting more frequent.
