I wish that people who want to have a go at the political positions of particular Councillors would start their own "knocking" thread rather than using this M&S thread. I am interested in seeing people's views on the M&S issue and don't want to keep reading knockabout political point scoring on this subject.

It would be a mistake to confuse the power of a landlord to include a covenant in a lease banning a lessee from having a car with the power of a local planning authority to impose a condition in such terms in a planning permission. I have severe doubts that a local planning authority would be able to enforce such a condition - and indeed doubts about the enforceability of such a covenant in a lease. Perhaps practising lawyers would like to comment. I hasten to add that I am in favour of the application and certainly don't want to derail it.

At first sight I was very pleased at the prospect of M&S coming to ED. However, when looking at the summary of the proposals, I was concerned about the potential traffic generation and parking issues. Now, having read the views of bemusED, I am satisfied that M&S will largely be able to meet the most serious objections to the application, subject that is to anything else that posters who are professionals such as architects and planners say about it.

Stik the street artist is painting Dulwich
Zebedee Tring replied to IngridB's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
He was supposed to be painting a garage door in Beauval Road last week but he hasn't come yet. I'm in two minds about this, since I wonder whether his effort would attract other graffiti. -
You should realise that it is a breach of someone's human rights to ask them to interrupt a mobile phone call in order that you can have a conversation with them. The person deprived of their phone call can claim damages under the Human Rights Act. What's all this nonsense about the LL PO being busy being used by all the middle classes? Whenever I go there, there are plenty of people who don't appear to fit into the "middle class" category.

You say that a staff dog was found. Of which business was this dog a member of staff?

former East Dulwich councillor - how can I help?

Hi, buddug. I wasn't suggesting that you were anonymous, just that some of JB's critics are anonymous. And criticism is always OK, provided that it's not abusive. BTW my real name is not Zebedee Tring. Mr Tring was a curmudgeonly old rustic character in The Archers who died (or was rather written out) about 40 years ago. -

If I were JB, I would stop posting on this site. Because he is brave enough to put his head above the parapet, some people (often anonymously) abuse him in a manner that they wouldn't dare to face to face. The moral is: behave like an old-fashioned Councillor and interact with the local punters as little as possible. That way, you will have a quieter life. -
I've had a version of the prevailing bug/bugs for about four weeks now. The feeling that you get with a cold when it's at its worst but before it's developed into the sneezy part of the cold when you get some inner relief from sneezing. Also aching limbs, aching teeth and a general breathlessness after walking for a relatively short distance.

And before it was Bejams, it was a small Sainsburys freezer store. There were other similar Sainsburys freezer stores e.g. in Streatham, but I think Sainsburys closed them in the late 80s.

The answer surely is not to level down but to level up pensions. Tax the rich and well off at a higher rate so that there can be a rise in state pensions for all (including, in due course, the current under 40s) and require private sector companies to restore final pension schemes - those companies who are now paying megabuck rises to their Chief Executives asset-stripped the pension funds in the 1990s, which they should not have been allowed to get away with. I am a baby boomer who has paid my fair share of tax during my entire working life, and I share that characteristic with most baby boomers that I know. I have retired on a public sector pension that could by no means be regarded as excessive. The state retirement pension that I will receive in a couple of years time will be low by EU standards. I resent the sweeping suggestion that baby boomers as a whole are unwilling to pay fair tax. The baby boomers who are unwilling to do this are the fat cats who really are coining it and/or using tax havens to avoid paying tax, such as Philip Green. And if you're worried about property prices, the government should require lenders (some of whom we, the taxpayers, own) to lend more readily once again to first time buyers and for developers to build on the copious amounts of land which they have hoarded. There should also be swingeing financial disincentives for people to leave properties unnecesaarily empty.

It's very easy for people in London, especially this area, to earn ?500k of property without being rich in any way, and I thought anyone contributing to this MB would know that. Rather than attack people over 60 who aren't poor, how about having a go at all the monstrously overpaid people in the finance area and those who are avoiding/evading paying tax? If the rich/well off were taxed at a higher rate and the Head of the Inland Revenue wasn't doing deals with the likes of Goldman Sachs and Vodafone letting them off vast amounts of tax and interest on unpaid tax, then we wouldn't have to have all these cuts.

55 - 65 year olds - where do they go?
Zebedee Tring replied to GrumpyGranny's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I am 63 next week. I enjoy sitting at home sucking Werthers Originals, saying things like "They don't make music like they used to do - no more MC5 and Jefferson Airplane" and "when I was a young man, you could go round the world for sixpence and still have change". Seriously though, there are plenty of charity shops where you could help out, such as the MIND shop and St Christopher's in Lordship Lane, or Oxfam in Herne Hill. And what about lectures at the Dulwich Picture Gallery? There's also the WI and reading groups - check what's on at the library. Plus with your Freedom Pass you don't need to hang about in ED. You can spend your day visiting freebie places in Central London, such as galleries, museums, parks. Or you could chill out with da kidz back at home, innit? -
The Clockmakers' Museum and Library might be able to help you. It is free to visit their museum which includes watches as well as clocks. http://www.clockmakers.org/museum-and-library/museum/

Does anyone know how much the reduced price for swimming is per month at the DLC? And what is the charge for over 60s swimming? -

James, there are a few more emails on the Alleyns coach parking problem that have been posted during the last few days. I wonder what progress, if any, you have made with Alleyns on this issue. -
James, I have checked the parking restrictions at and near Alleyns. The coach bays are reserved for coaches Mon-Fri between 8 and 10 and between 3 and 5. Signs prohibit parking on the yellow lines at these same times and make no exception for waiting on yellow lines. So Alleyns' claim that the coach drivers are legally allowed to wait on the yellow lines during the prohibited hours is incorrect. The coaches certainly have no right to park on double yellow lines at any time. I would be interested to hear Alleyns' reaction to recent emails on this subject.

Hi, James. Yesterday we used my wife's phone to take photos of offending coaches. Today I used my own phone but I am currently having difficulty in downloading the photos that I took. At 3.25 pm I took photos of Excalibur coach number YN06JXA which was parked on a yellow line adjacent to Alleyn's Field and of Merlin Tours coach number P270 HBC on a yellow line just next to the main school entrance. There were spaces available in the coach bays. Neither of them was in the process of picking up Alleyns kids at the time. The drivers of both coaches took issue with the fact that I was taking the photos. They both told me to "get a life" (clearly a cliche much beloved by coach drivers) and one of them said that he had been allowed to park outside the bays for 11 years. One of them said that if I didn't like it, I should move. Not only are coach drivers in breach of the law, they are insulting local residents. This is just not acceptable and Alleyns should be told about this in no uncertain terms.
