  1. We are no longer in ED, but also have a child who has just begun reception. We feel almost overwhelmed with the amount of information we receive from the school. This half term we have had a 'meet the teacher evening' when we were invited into the classroom with the teacher and were talked thought the weekly timetable, rewards, sanctions and other school systems. At this evening there was also ample time to discuss questions about the term so far. We have also had an e-safety talk and a more formal parents evening this week. We receive a weekly whole school newsletter and a Reception newsletter which details the learning objectives and foci for the week, both by email. The school has a very open feel and we are encouraged to communicate with the class teacher and other staff at the end of the day or by phone of it's more appropriate. The class teachers give us a wave as they hand over the children if they need to have a quick chat about anything which has happened from a grazed knee to an explanation as to why they're wearing different socks! We feel very connected to what is happening for our daughter at school because of this excellent channel of commincation. I feel that I should also add that I am a teacher and realise the strains on teachers and schools in terms of time. This makes us even more grateful to be part of a school community who clearly value sharing our experience to help our children. To the OP, it sounds like you just want to have an understanding of what happens in your child's school day and I hope that some of the above examples will be helpful in your discussions with the school. It's great that they are keen to enter into a discussion about how to improve communication, a very good start.
  2. I used to work at Bacon's College. I would be happy to answer any questions via PM. In brief, I'd be quite happy to send my own children there, but to my knowledge it'd be very unlikely that an ED child would get a place there under the general admissions criteria.
  3. Hi there, our daughter will be starting at Goose Green nursery too. I can do the 6th and the 21st, so either or both fine with us.
  4. We took our son here this morning and it was great. Very patient barber who worked well around our wriggly little one.
  5. Yes she is and yes it is a travesty. She will be there until the end of the month I believe. Some other long serving staff being moved to other centres which is also a big shame. We had a big Easter party last week, but I think we may also have a leaving party for Beverley so I'll PM you if/when if you'd like.
  6. Hi, my children are at CGEYC and are both happy there. The centre is in the process of a huge restructuring of staff and fees and as I understand it there will be no new children starting before September. So, while there is a traditionally huge waiting list, this could be a good opportunity to get in at shorter than usual notice. My only word of warning is that while the centre is run extremely well by hugely dedicated staff the decision making comes from Southwark Council and they seem to pay very little regard to the staff or families who actually make up the population of the centre. For instance, the fees are going up in July but they have failed to tell staff or parents by how much - quite irritating for budgeting etc. The current manager has lost her job in the restructuring process so it's probably best to contact Beatrice the assistant manager; she's very helpful.
  7. I am currently a teacher and for various reasons have decided to register with Ofsted as a childminder. I am intending to begin minding in September and am looking in to doing in on a term time only basis as I have commitments with my own children during the holidays. I am just wondering if people think this would be something which could be of interest to them? I am based very near ED station and would probably be able to pick up from Goose Green School and Nursery. Thanks
  8. Sainsbury's have an own brand one with a soft spout, lid and valve. Used them with both of our children for water and they do a bigger one without handles which we now use instead of a bottle for milk. They are also glow in the dark so have a novelty factor too!
  9. Hi, Just wondering if there were any other tours planned for Goose Green School? Tuesdays are difficult for us due to work commitments. Thanks
  10. Hi, Our daughter will be starting at Bessemer Grange nursery in september and we are looking for a childminder to do pick ups/drop offs Monday-Wednesday. If anyone knows someone who does this already or might be interested then please get in touch. Thanks, Claire
  11. We have just had two large rocks thrown at our back door. The door is damaged, but what concerns us more is that this could have happened when we or our children were in the garden. We know this also happened to our neighbours and have phoned the police. If it happened to you too can I please urge you to do the same. My husband jumped over the fence and chased the group of about 8 boys aged approx 14-18; all in hoodies and wearing caps. The fact they ran away is quite a relief.
  12. Hi Telegraph, Back to your original question.........we pay our childminder ?58.50 per day (7.45 - 4.45), but we have a term time only arrangement. This was the most expensive we found, but in this case we really do get what we pay for. Our daughter is very happy and loves all the groups she gets to go to so much so that on my days off she often looks perplexed if we haven't done something really fun before 11am. We also get regular picture messages documneting the fun times which can really brighten up a day at work. As has been noted, you will know when you have found the right person, but I think my point is really that if you see someone who is charging a little over the average, find out why........it might be worth it :)
  13. Where do you work? Most boroughs have subsidised term time only nurseries, usually attached to a school. There is one at Redriff school in Rotherhithe and one in Eltham, but I'm sure there are more, perhaps ask about at work soemone might already be taking adventage of them. Hope that helps
