  1. I'm looking into having a pair of curtains turned into a Roman blind. I've been quoted ?500 by a blind and shutter company which I think is hideously expensive. It's not a particularly big window either. Is there anybody in east dulwich who knows how to do it or can recommend somewhere? Thanks!

Have the news got it wrong and it?s the EU who has been coming to London asking for extensions? The uk could have left in March if it had really really really really wanted to - it?s got nothing to do with the EU that parliament has decided that it doesn?t want to leave without a deal. It?s such a simple concept, yet I?ve come across well educated people who don?t get it: The EU has no say over whether, as current EU members, we stay or leave. We can leave without a deal whenever we want, and if The UK changes its mind it can choose to stay unilaterally. What?s so difficult to understand about that? Is it the word ?unilaterally?? Maybe people don?t understand what the unilateral concept means in this context. (Please don?t say ?it?s the backstop?, because the backstop has nothing to do with the uk ability to unilaterally leave without a deal, or revoke and stay)

Best-sellers happen because of the amount of money thrown at the publicity. It doesn't matter how good your book is if nobody knows about it, and to publicise a book costs a lot of money. If you think that you would be missing out, ask Artifice how and where they will promote your book and what does their 'distribution' entails, and ask RIBA the same question and then see who is going to reach the people who are more likely to want to read your book. Also ask yourself who is your book aimed at and who is going to reach those people best - Artifice or RIBA?
  4. I've worked in publishing. Most publishing houses offer 10-15% royalty for professional books such as yours. 40,000k for self-publishing for only 1,000 copies is far too much and if somebody is quoting you that they are making a massive profit. If you do self- publish you'd pay about ?10,000 for a freelancer and then depending on how many copies anything from ?5 per copy (litho printing) to ?50 copy (laser printing). If you have a RIBA offer go for that because they will also promote it whereas if you self publish, even if you self publish practically for free, that's where you will stumble. RIBA would get you into specialist and museum shops which no way you'd be able to if you self publish. I think your book is s great idea and likely do unexpectedly well. Try see if RIBA will go to 20% royalty to try to settle at 15%
  5. Having a big clear out, we have lots of baby (newborn- 2 years old) clothes we would like to give not to a charity shop but directly to the babies who need them - any ideas where?
  6. I was writing that for the benefit of those who have helpfully pointed out that I'm depriving the community of the enjoyment of library books because I have, on ocassion, returned the books late.
  7. Thanks for the replies, yes mea culpa, however - did you know that you can reserve books even if they are currently out on loan? and that if you reserve the item then the book can't be renewed?
  8. It seems that when I pay a fine using Southwark's self service it doesn't always get allocated to my account. Anybody else find this problem? I've been suspecting it for a while but thought maybe I had forgotten etc but I'm quite sure now. Problem is I haven't kept receipts (according to system some fines going back to 2016 even). Anybody else have this? Some years ago for some reason my account was duplicated on their system and ever since there's not been a time when I haven't had a problem despite assurances that everything is, now, fixed.
  9. I have an 8 year old boy. Over the years I've noticed that the amount of boys clothes for ages 5+ at east dulwich sainsbury's has shrunk. I've asked the shop floor staff about it, I've asked to speak with store manager (always in a meeting or not in yet....), and I've filled in feedback forms etc. Nothing has changed - baby boys and small boys are decently catered for, but boys over 5 years old have a very limited range. I've learnt not to shop there for boys clothes and that's that. However.....when it comes to school uniforms.... This morning I went in hoping that at least they would have boys uniform trousers. The photo attached shows the proportion of items labelled boys (blue), girls (pink) and unisex (green). It's always been balanced towards more labelled girls uniforms but today was a bit ridiculous.(and yes I've followed the stereotypical labelling in my photo to make the point. Only two rails of boys trousers. I think to myself 'Does it matter if the trousers are labelled for girls if they are plain? Could he still wear them?' On closer inspection all the girls trousers have either heart shaped buttons, or a bow or a butterfly, and knowing my son he wouldn't choose to wear them. So girls get three racks of differentiated trousers to choose from, on top of three racks for skirts and one for dresses, and boys have just two racks (one for shorts and one for long trousers). Could they not either stock gender neutral trousers, or stock more boys' trousers?? Am I the only one who finds this unbalance exasperating? Boys also need to wear uniforms! I'll be writing to head office and get onto the social media. Rant over...thanks for listening!
  10. Planning our summer holiday, decided we'd like to go to Provence to see nimes, Avignon and surrounding areas. Any recommendations of where to stay? DS is an only child so considering a lodge within a campsite so he can make some friends but wondering if anybody would recommend a particular one, or alternatives? Thank you!
  11. I was in the 19.34 train from Victoria. It did originally plan to stop at Denmark hill but after about 10 minutes delay we were told that the train would not stop at Denmark hill anymore. Unfortunately there were a lot of announcements being made (because of an earlier incident at herne hill causing some trains to be delayed/cancelled), so the in-train announcement about the changed stops could have been drowned out by the louder platform announcements.
  12. My nearly 8 year old wants a laser quest party. We've never been to any such venues- any recommendations? Also, any ideas for birthday presents that is not lego, or Pok?mon, or nothing to do with collecting any sort of cards??
  13. I am looking for a private tutor, from September/October, for my son who will be in year 3 then. The primary aim is not so much prepare for future entrance exams but more to get him into a routine as he is not very good at focusing and is starting to get behind at school. Ideally somebody who would be able to come to ours. If you are interested please PM me or pass on a recommendation, thanks.
  14. Does anybody know of any holiday clubs still running on the 18th April? I've just found out that our school has an inset day! Thanks
  15. Considering taking child to private school (not decided on a specific one), but before diving in, wondering: 1/ outside the usual intake points- how realistic is it to get a place? Has it ever happened to anybody on the forum? 2/ if you don't live walking distance to school (say 30 mins away or less), and you work, how do you manage pick up/ drop off? This would be for primary. Thank you for any tips shared!
  16. Thank you all for taking the time to reply. I have decided I'm not going to share, but what I'm going to do is tell her what chapters of the recommended reading I found useful and offer to have a chat with her before the next lecture. I'm investing a lot of time (and money) into this course and for all I know, although she seems lovely and I'm sure she means well, if she copied outright then it would be obvious, and it is part of an exam not just class homework, so it is not worth the risk. If that makes me the class unpopular girl.....well, I've dealt with bigger and nastier.....
  17. Hi all, I'm in my 40s and I am having school flashbacks. Here it goes... I'm doing a professional qualification and as part of the exam we have to do a piece of coursework. We have submitted drafts to our course tutor before submitting it to the qualifying body, and my course tutor has suggested to another student that she asks me to see my draft assignment so that she can see what to aim for [smug pat on the back for me]. My instinct is to say: 'Of course, here it is have a copy, have my firstborn child, have my house, everything', because I am a people pleaser and I don't like to say 'no', and also because I would love for somebody to share their assignment with me too if I was in her shoes. However.....a long long time ago when I was doing A levels I let a friend copy a Biology essay and we got caught and we both got 0, so I learnt that lesson. These days and in grown up courses, is letting somebody else see my exam coursework cheating? But I don't know how to say 'no', and I will have to see the student most weeks for the rest of the course, and there is more than 6 months to go, and I just want to be loved. But how would they find out if I share my assignment? Would it even matter? What if Who knows, but I'm of the paranoid type - can you tell? What would you do? I'm back in the playground!
  18. I was drove down dog kennel hill, waited at the junction fro the traffic to turn right into sainsbury's. When traffic light for oncoming traffic turned red I turned right. Now, there is a traffic light just when you exit the turning and it was red. I carried on without stopping. I'm sure I should have stopped, however the car in front of me which did the same maneuvre also jumped it, so that's two cars in a row. Is there a camera for this set of lights? I'm beating up myself about it so much.
  19. In the mornings we have no cold water (SE5), a few hours later it comes back. It's becoming a pattern. Apart from the Great Leak of Gallery Road a couple of weeks back, Thames Water are unable to tell me which road/s are causing the problem in the morning. Any idea what's going on? Obviously a leak somewhere, but where and why the regularity and specially the punctuality? (8am seems to be the cut off time for us).
  20. Thank you all for the recommendations, I will follow up.
  21. I think if you know what school the kids are from you should report it to the head. Filming or taking a photograph of a child without the parent consent, and storing and distributing the footage (eg on social media) is a criminal offence (I think), so it is a very serious matter and I am sure any school whose pupils do this would be keen to talk with them about. Teenagers don't always understand/know how serious it could get.
  22. Not strictly a family room discussion, but I thought I might get more replies if I put here. I have taken up piano again after a 15 year break, and am looking for a piano teacher for me, but since I work full time I can only do weekends, ideally Sunday morning (is this near impossible?). I am preparing Grade 6 and I need to fine tune the set pieces, I need motivation to practice my scales, and I need to improve my sight reading. If you could recommend somebody, or if you are a piano teacher reading this, please send me a PM. My ambition is to get to Grade 8, and hopefully this time I won't leave it another 15 years! Thanks.
  23. Can you recommend somebody to fit wooden flooring? Thanks!
  24. Thanks for the suggestions. Yes I do follow with no TV etc but I don't think he minds that much! I'm hoping somebody will say it is a phase thing that most children go through and it happens and one day (before he is 18 preferably) it will just stop. Doesn't it?!
