Hospital warns parents about liquitabs after children burned
Saffron replied to Saffron's topic in The Family Room Discussion
That's interesting. I hadn't heard that. Why is powder more effective in the machine? I have heard that laundry powders are more cost effective and tend to leave less residue on clothing, which is better if you have skin problems maybe. However, I tend to avoid powders b/c DH gets them everywhere (on the rare occsions when he runs a load of laundry, bless 'im). I use laundry liquid, but I buy bottles generally, not liquid tabs, as I sometimes run only 1/2 loads. -
Peckham Rye Zippos Circus & Protest
Saffron replied to Tom Micklewright's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
OP Jessie Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Sounds to me like the police presence was a bit > far fetched. Perhaps the police presence is considered necessary and adequate in this instance b/c the venue is particulary sensitive, in so far as that there are children attending the event. > Not that I agree with the cause of > protest per se but we're allowed surely to voice > opposition? Indeed people were allowed to voice opposition, but in a sensitive and controlled manner considering the nature of the event including children. What kind of person actually wants to harass and disturb families with children? Again, if you really want to do something to help animals (and families), apply your time and money here or similar to help working horses in developing countries: http://www.wspa.org.uk/wspaswork/workinghorses/ . Celia Hammond animal shelter is also particularly overrun with animals, especially as it's "kitten season". Instead of wasting time protesting outside the circus in front of children, spend an hour volunteering at the shelter where you will instantly be making a difference to the lives of animals. -

...and then there are the absent minded partners: DH keeps opening the sharps drawer then forgetting to put the child lock back on it. Arrrghh!! -

I totally agree, but accidents do happen. Possibly some people hadn't realized that detergents should be in a locked cupboard b/c they are dangerous, and I think under-2s would put them in their mouths just out of curiosity w/o knowing what a jelly sweet is. -
MMR jab at Evelina Children's Hosp.

Phone NHS direct 0845 4647. I think you need to speak to someone before the jab. There should be a standard clinical protocol for this. xx -

Chippy Minton Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > How can you be accurate about something that is > completely subjective? Show us the vets' reports or peer-reviewed journal articles please. I'm not talking about subjective cruelty. I'm talking about objective diagnosis joint/tendon injury in horses. -

Saffron replied to Tom Micklewright's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Free speech is important, but so is accuracy. If people are protesting against something that isn't really happening, then what is that exactly? Harassment? Offence? Fine, I guess people have the right to be offensive (as this forum regularly demonstrates!). But don't expect to be taken seriously in that case (as this forum also regularly demonstrates!!). -

Where are you getting your information that Circus performance causes tendon damage? Should people also protest against the Lipizzaner horses? What about military/royal horses? They commonly develop spavin and degenerative joint disease. [information presented in a lecture series on veterinary imaging techniques at University of Wales, Aberystwyth: Institute of Rural Sciences, 2007] Equids in Britain, whether they be working animals or companions, have some of the highest legal standards of care of any equids in the world. If you really want to make a difference to the lives of equids, why not spend your time and money volunteering for an organisation which treats working animals overseas in poor communities, where the lives of animals also make a difference to the lives of people? Seriously, working horses in Britain have an easy life compared to these: http://www.wspa.org.au/wspaswork/workinghorses/Default.aspx . Put in your energy where it will really make a difference. xx -
Is something wrong with the powder, not the machine? Did the problem start with this box of powder?

If they didn't feel qualified to give advice themselves, they could have at least suggested that you needed to go to A&E. How is your little boy now? If you're worried at all about the wound, take him to A&E in the morning. xx -
I think you can still give baby Neurofen (ibuprofen) even if you've already given Calpol (paracetamol). NHS direct can give you more info anytime, phone 0845 4647. It's normal for some children to develop fever after their immunisations, but a fever that is high or prolonged should always be investigated. It sounds like you're doing all the right things, keeping him cool. Can he sleep on a towel w/o a nappy? Where is his bed? Is the room cool and well ventilated? If you're worried, can you sleep near him? Don't forget you need to rest too. xx

Does it really matter if you only have 1 child?!
Saffron replied to SBot's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Hi SBot, you can always be 'eteranally grateful' for your daughter whether or not you ever have anymore children. :) Also, I agree with midivydale, regarding perceptions of singleton children. Only children aren't lonely or spoiled or any other negative stereotypes in comparison to multiples. We have one child, and I'm happy with that. Husband would like more children, but we can't afford it. In the past we've had a lot of successful playdates/playgroups for singleton children through the Forum. I found that people's reasons for only having one child were hugely varied, and the children were all lovely and completely normal. Perhaps we should get the playgroup organised again? -
Sunday Lunch recommendations
Saffron replied to babisticbabymassage's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Mr Saff and I used to really like The Herne just off Peckham Rye, but recently it seems the quality of their food isn't what it used to be. It's not bad, it's just not outstanding. When we go there now, we know it's because our 2.5 yr old loves the playgound in the back garden at the The Herne, not b/c we're expecting great food. Although to their credit the last time we were there and the food was late to arrive at our table, Hubbie heckled them mercilessly, and they did give us a 20% discount. -
Support for partners of people quitting smoking
Saffron replied to Saffron's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Well he's still smoke-free, so that's a good result. I think there is probably a long way to go to change the psychological side of things. When he's feeling grumbly he can't just go sit on the back step and have a smoke anymore! Plus during all the time he spent being moody on his nicotine detox, it seems to me that he got used to me doing everything around the house while he sat on the sofa being moldy in the evening (dinner, toddler, cleaning, organising, bathtime, bedtime etc)!! Now I'm starting full time work, so I can't do everything in the evening anymore. I think he's finding it all very difficult. ...it's enough to make a man want to take up smoking! But seriously, it's great that he quit, and Champix was very effective. -
Baby ill lots since starting nursery
Saffron replied to adelle f's topic in The Family Room Discussion
How old is your baby? If he is at least 12 months old and has not already had the varicella virus (chicken pox), you can have him immunised for it. The NHS does not offer this service, but there are a number of private clinics in London that do so. After the initial jab your LO can have the booster 6-8wks later (this was the recommendation I originally received), or he can have the second jab before starting reception (this the imms schedule as currently recommended by the US CDC as part of standard childhood imms in the States http://www.cdc.gov/chickenpox/vaccination.html) . For vommitting and diarrhoea, probiotics can shorten the duration of illness. Check at the health shop on LL for recommendations for child-specific probiotics. I don't know of anything proven to help with nose colds in children, but there are a lot of anecdotal remedies. I'd be cautious about spending loads of money on anything that doesn't have at least a bit of basic scientific reasoning behind it. Most of the stuff for colds seems to be aimed at symptomatic relief. I like Snuffle Babe and eucalyptus tissues. xx -
Check with the nursery about their 'settling in' procedure. If they have a very short settling in period, ask for extra settling in time. They may give you some hours for free, and/or you may have to pay for some settling in time (very likely), but at least you'll have the peace of mind of knowing that she's settled well with nursery staff. For example, plan a start date a week or two before the acutal date you need her to start attending. Use that time to build up a rapport between your daughter and the staff, especially her keyworker. On the first day, stay with your daughter in the nursery and spend only 1/2 to 1 hr there getting to know all the staff. On the next day, leave your daughter alone with the staff for just a little while, maybe only 20 min. Gradually work your way up to leaving her for longer periods of time, until by the end she's spending nearly a full day at the nursery. I think it's normal to worry, no matter what age your children are. xx

Childcare costs forcing you to give up work?
Saffron replied to emc's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Thanks everyone for making some great points, and especially LondonMix for explaining the seeming paradox of double-tax for nannies. Maybe you said somewhere and I missed it, but why don't nannies file their own taxes independtly the same as others? (Or maybe some nannies do quote net and file their own taxes?) Are they legally barred from doing so? Isn't an independent nanny who is not working for an angency considered to be self-employed, eg files own tax? Pardon my ignorance, it's not an area in which I have a great deal of experience. I know there has been controversy over the issue in the past. Just wondering where it stands now? -
What type of dressings are you using on the affected area? Hydroclloid dressings can be used on wounds of low/medium exudate and need only be changed every 3-5 days. Compared to traditional gauze-type dressings, hydrocolloids promote better wound healing, are more occlusive (less dirt gets into the wound), and provide better pain management. Hydrocolloids have been around for years, but I'm still finding that lots of people don't know about them or don't know they can be used on 'wet' wounds. You should be able to buy them at any large pharmacy. You often find them sold as large sheets which you cut to fit the affected area. xx
