  1. JJMB are not upmarket - no more so than Mamas and Papas. Each to their own where they choose to buy their goods. If you don't like what's on the high street either don't patronise the establishment or open up your own place and put your money where your mouth is - let's test out those sure fire ideas of yours.
  2. I'm inclined to agree with Sean. Heidi hasn't said anything outlandish, far from. her point is that we tend to overreact in this country and in truth it aint half bad. Turkey and the mid East are times worse than here. They (Israel) had to build a gargantuan series of - legal/illegal - walls to reduce the numbers of suicide bombers. You all forget how regular those news reports came in about devestation.

In saying that I agree I do have sympathy with the police who on this subject will be damned if they do and damned if they don't. Hopefully they will follow Heidi's point and intercept before a suspect enters a public space.

  3. Michael - you make a good point as does Anna and Sean. Your point re the ultimate police society is so true. What is the point of all these cameras if all they do is deal with the past and not preventing crime? Will ID cards get us any closer, I think not.

I am sure there have been some foiled attempts but perhaps not as many as the police/government would like us to believe.

  4. @ AD - I really don't think this is a class war thing. Come on now! From a non ED/Camberwell perspective this is an example of the all too rare application of common sense. For the greater good and fair on the othe residents of that part of Camberwell who were/are currently contending with greater volumes of traffic.

If some people are delighting in 'posh bashing' that's their pretty sad preserve.

Although this issue does affect women more keenly than men, I don't think that means men should not a. have opnions on the subject or b. legislate (i.e. male MPs). We talk of society and it is for society through MPs and judges (as useless as some may be) to make the law that fits the current morality of this society. This can and will change over time by science and increased conservatism or liberlaism but it is a matter for men and women together to determine not women alone.

Otherwise, like PGC says, none of us could expect anyone but victims, sufferers or perpetrators of whatever crime, disease or condition to be able to debate and frame opinions/legislation on whatever the matter of concern.

  6. We went to Blackheath too! Must have had pyrotechnic fever. This was almost on another level to Brockwell Park in terms of scale - way more than 60,000 attended. Music playing - I think the team behind it must really live for their art. They even manged to play the circle of life by Elton John at one point - cue lots of circular firework displays - genius! That aside it was amazing, the big booms were almost overhead. Did anyone make it to Burbage Road?
