  1. Just to say I have had quite a few great deliveries from Guy now. I can thoroughly recommend him.
  2. My friend bought fish from a mobile fishmonger and realised later that he had given her much less than she had paid for. Make sure you weigh before you pay.
  3. I had seen a post here advertising a meat and fish delivery service by Markymarket. I wanted some good quality, well priced fish for a dinner party and he sourced it for me. It was lovely and I think I have recommended him for it. However, it was only on Saturday that I realised the true worth of this guy. It was getting late, I had nothing for dinner and really didn't was to traipse out into the snow to buy something, si I called up Markymarket on the off chance that he had something left over. He offered me a corn fed chicken or some steak burgers, both from Smithfield market. Being slightly put off by the thought of burgers at the moment, I plumbed for the chicken. He delivered it in less than half an hour. It was delicious. This guy should go far. I wish him the best of luck.
  4. Northlondoner, I searched for 'crushed and devalued', but it wasn't there, just a few posts referring to the phrase whose authors had obviously seen the original post. Now I am intrigued......
  5. Hello I'm looking for a French teacher with experience of teaching groups of young children. Please PM me if you are interested. Thanks
  6. If you want Jazz, I'd say Loclann O'Grady is your man. [email protected]. He teaches everything, but Jazz is speciality.
  7. I'm trying to organise one for Telegraph Hill. Maybe we could join forces, or at least discuss how it can work.
  8. I bought some smoked haddock from markymarket. Good quality and well priced, delivered to my door step. I would definitely use him again.
  9. I can highly recommend Daniel Stuttard, who has been treating me with cranial osteopathy following a bike accident. I also went to him with a sore neck/shoulder last year, which he managed to cure in only a couple of sessions. He teaches at the Children's Osteopathy centre in Farringdon and has his own practice in Sloane Square (I think), but practices from home in Telegraph Hill for a much reduced fee. His number is 07905231377.
  10. Thanks for your response. It's Edmund Waller, the other side of Nunhead.
  11. I'm concerned that my daughter's school is taking the softly, softly approach to teaching too far. Do your children learn spellings in years 1 and 2? Do they have spelling tests? If so, please let me know what they are given and which school they go to. Thanks
  12. As a flat, you do not have permitted development rights but if you build out only 3m from the back of your flat and 3m or less tall you would probably get planing permission, althought there are other factors to consider, like size of garden etc. I agree that pre-applicaiton advice is not worth it. Southwark are so stretched that they have made it unattractive for small projects. It takes up too much of their time. A planner is also unlikely to give you any advice without drawings in front of him/her. Best bet is to get an architect round to advise you. Good luck.
  13. I'm not sure if this is the correct section, sorry if not. I'm looking for somewhere to stay for the weekend 19th-21st October in the New Forest for two families of four. Any recommendations? Thanks
  14. We pay about ?40 for gas and ?40 for electricity. We have a 3 storey Victorian terraced house. Family of 4 with a lodger. 4 bed, 2 bath, occupied during the day. We have done quite a lot to improve our house thermally - replaced sash beads with brushed beads, clad the side of our outrigger with insulation and timber cladding, extending the rear with a cavity walled rear extension on two levels. We also have a wood burning stove and solar water heating panels. I'm glad to see it seems to be paying off!
  15. A lot of these rear sewage pipes got adopted as public sewers in October last year so many of you may now find you have public sewers in your garden. They say it is so that they can take responsibility for maintaining them, but with a fee for connecting to an existing sewer and a separate fee for building within 3 metres of an existing sewer, I suspect Thames Water just saw the opportunity to capitalise on the increased trend in house extensions. http://www.thameswater.co.uk/got-a-problem/8654.htm Depending on the invert level of the sewer, you could drop the access point down - to the approval of Thames Water, of course. I agree with red devil re: the chimney breast. The vendors should be responsible for providing the Building Control Certificate for the works done. Planning permission is not usually required.
  16. Mr Ben - "Bottom line is that it IS totally unregulated industry in the UK so you're always taking pot luck." Not if you use an architect.
  17. We went last night too, food was delicious. Hats off to the waitresses who were rushed off their feet, but cheerful and polite. I asked one of them about the owners. If I understood correctly there are three of them, one is the guy who owns the Palmerston, one is a Michelin starred chef who went to Thailand with the third and co-wrote a book called Thai Street food. I wish them the best of luck.
  18. I'd agree with sizzler - if you want something bespoke designed to meet your taste and way of living, architectural input is beneficial. If you just want more space and don't care so much about what it looks like, a good loft company would be more that capable of giving you what you want. I also agree with MSA - it is unfair to state that all architects are crooked. An architect can actually save you thousands by careful design and competent contract administration during construction. As for answering the initial question, I'd say it depends on your requirements and your taste, but just based on disruption and economies of scale, I would say if you can get them both done together, go for it.
  19. You could also try Rolo's class from 11am - 12.30pm on a Saturday Morning. Ashtanga yoga, highly recommend it. It's at the Copleston centre on Copleston Road and only costs ?10 for one and a half hours, and his classes are small, sometimes only 4 people, at most 10.
  20. My husband is a Certified Passivhaus designer. Maybe he could help - 07932 717 064.
  21. I'm from Cockermouth, just west of Keswick. It's a lovely little town. Wordsworth was born and lived there. There's a great veggie B&B. Check out http://www.veggielakelandliving.co.uk/ The owner used to own a vegan restaurant in town. She's a great cook.
  22. PS Renata I would like to hold you to our word regarding non closure of libraries and children's centres. There are so many posts about possible closures, some posted by ED councillors, it's great to know that they are all safe.
  23. Thanks Renata I'd say you need to address the application system rather than giving free meals to families who can clearly afford it. You say you will not see evidence of any success for ten years, but then say that after the success of your pilot scheme last year you are going to roll out the scheme to every child in primary school. On what evidence? One child eating vegetables? I'm pretty sure you wouldn't get any negative feedback from parents who now don't have to pay for their child's lunch. What negative feedback were you expecting? I have friends on benefits who still manage to feed their children healthy food. It's more about education than giving out freebies. My child currently gets school meals from Chartwells, a popular provider of 'healthy' school meals . She regularly comes home having eaten burgers and chips, fish fingers or biscuit with custard. Why can't the money be spent on installing kitchens in all schools to cook meals themselves, rather than going to these large companies? The children could even help with the food prep. I see from James Barber's posts that there are quite a few holes in your argument. I am well aware that there are many families in need of these meals, and I would give my wholehearted backing to these families receiving them. I do believe that there are plenty of families in Southwark - not just in Dulwich, but in other districts such as London Bridge, Waterloo, Herne Hill, Tower Bridge, Shad Thames and Bermondsey who can well afford their child's school meals.
