  1. I would love schools to share more of their facilities. Both state and private. Primary and secondary. The sharing economy is growing with Airbnb, Uber, Lyft, EatWith etc? The sports fields of schools seem an area ripe for this. Not sure how the private schools would see it as a economic benefit to themselves unless the state schools had the funds to pay for the usage?. Maybe their charitable status could/should be taken away if they didn?t learn how to share. My daughter uses Alleyns sports field once a year for her state school?s sports day. I would happily pay a sports sub for her to do more sport ? if she could run around in a field more. I know this isn?t an option every parent can afford. Maybe something the PTAs could fund raise for? This is an article about Thomson House in Richmond a new free school ? that have access to the Harrodian School?s sports grounds as well as their gifted and talented programme. http://www.yourlocalguardian.co.uk/news/local/10703933.New_free_school_in_Mortlake_opens/
  2. My children are in Heber and love it. However catchment is very small though. You will need to consider this when moving. Might be easier to rent in catchment than buy.
  3. Balham glass and joinery. They did a great job. Looks like a door from london door company, but fraction of the price.
  4. Thanks for your comments, my little girl received a shiny pound coin and has a suitable gappy smile :) In my research on the going rate - I came across a child who received a packet of chicken flavoured crisps. The tooth fairy had no change and improvised.
  5. My daughter has lost her first tooth today! Can anyone help please? What's the current rate paid by the tooth fairy in East Dulwich? I was thinking a pound?

  7. Love the idea! Was having a similar converstaion with hubby about the need for one and also thought the forest hill wetherspoons should be returned to it's former glory. However would prefer it to be in ED! As well as mainsteam/indie/foregin language films... how about a kid screenings (maybe Disney classics or sound of music type movies - wholesome fun!) or mums/dads and babies screenings (with more adult movies for parents grieving the lost of their social lives since babies have come along. These sessions could be in the mornings to make more use of the space and for something to do with kids when the weather is dodgey or when parents need to chill out with popcorn or catch up on sleep:)-D
  8. That's good to know - so it's not impossible to return! Maybe I can sleep more easy at night now. Thanks everyone :)
  9. Thank you all for your help. Will speak with the head and go from there.
  10. Has any parent on the forum taken a child out of a local primary school and been able to return their child to the same school a few yrs later? We have the opportunity with my husbands work to live overseas for a few yrs.... and this would be a fantastic opportunity experience for us all. When we return our second child will be of primary school age. Do we go back on to a waiting list (for the first child) once we have given up their place? Is it a head teacher or a southwark education dept issue? On our return, if my second child gets a place at the school will my first child get a sibling place automatically? Sorry about all the questions.... schooling seemed so much easier when I was a child in the 70s. Kids seemed to come and go! Any advice would be most welcomed, I'm not sure where to start with all this.
  11. The programme 'Empty houses' on last week on claims it's going to be social housing - but not sure when! See link http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0197bf7/Britains_Empty_Homes_Series_3_Andy_Erlam/
  12. Sorry if this has been a thread before - but I couldn't find anything. Any recommendations for a dentist that is good with young children. I have a two yr old and a four yr old. Cheers in advance
  13. When I started this thread this morning I had a screaming sick baby on my hip as I typed the post. I was trying to be economic with words, as well as trying to give people a close description of the young gentleman. He had bad teeth, no distinct accent and he wasn't dressed for the day at the office. I put the term pikey in inverted commas, because I knew it probably wasn't the most pc expression, but at the time I couldn't think of a better way to explain his shitfy activity and his physical description in one go. I was using the term to describe the possible tribe he might belong to. If a young lady in pearls was trying to acquire my hose in the same way he was, I might have said she was a bit of 'sloane'. Peterstorm's 1985 description of pikey is exactly what I meant. Anyway what bothered me about the encounter was that I had the light on in the living room and I wasn't sure if he could see me but was carrying on regardless. Also when he left I looked out the front door and he was very quickly walking away in a 'trying to be casual but getting the hell out of here sort of way'. I was thinking why didn't he carry on knocking on neighbours doors like he claimed he previously done? And why doesn't he buy some hose pipe from the Plough hardware store round the corner? I posted the thread because I thought he might be involved in something bigger, didn't care too much for the hose. A cowboy house renovation or have a dodgy colonic irrigation practice. I've been out of the country for 10yrs and recently returned. Has the word pikey become more offensive in my absence?
  14. Around 8.15 this morning I caught a guy trying to take the hose pipe off my water butt in the front garden. I was sat in the living room watching him. At first, I thought it was a bin man trying to untangle the hose from the wheelie bin but after 5 mins he was still there. I banged on the window and he said he was looking for a hose pipe to drain a radiator down the road and he was going to return it! He said he had already asked some neighbours and they didn't have a hose. Anyway I basically told him he couldn't have it (as I didn't think I'd ever see it again) and he scarpered pretty quickly. He was white, probably in his twenties, grey bomber jacket, short brown hair and to be honest seemed a bit of a "pikey". I certainly wouldn't want him doing any work my house - especially if he's going to nick the tools to do the work. Anyway I thought I'd better post something about the incident. As it was a strange encounter.
  15. Hi Jenny I'm a graphic designer/art director mainly in fashion/retail. I have also dabbled in photography. I have a ten month old and a 3.5yr old. Just moved to East Dulwich from Sydney three weeks ago. I'm doing up a house whilst in SE22 and wasn't intending to get behind a mac. But your post intrigued me. Do you think my skills might be useful?
