  1. I accept that it really comes down to whether or not you believe there is heavy congestion now that didn't' exist pre LTNS. This assessment is not helped by Southwark's failure to actually baseline, and COVID / lockdowns (the latter has made the former more difficult of course). But I don't buy the picture being painted by some of clear streets and clean air on the main roads that apparently existed up until the introduction LTNS. In the areas where councils have bowed to pressure and removed LTNs, it's made no discernible difference to congestion on main roads.

Especially the ones with > schools, nurseries and health centres? Don't know whether that's directed at me (as it follows on from my post) or not, but the point I was making was that I haven't actually seen evidence that things are worse on main road now than pre-covid. Certainly the videos above and the data on congestion levels I linked to don't suggest so. We need to tackle the problem of pollution on main roads. Making it as easy as possible to drive around the area by car and creating more pollution across more streets doesn't do it. The idea that it's 'fairer' if there are high levels of pollution everywhere seems perverse and doesn't help anyone imo.
  3. I do wonder whether some have forgotten what the roads were like pre-COVID: Although it gets stated as fact that traffic is much worse now, I think it's highly debatable. Some independent (London wide) data here: https://www.tomtom.com/en_gb/traffic-index/london-traffic/
  4. Ha! Love it- Thanks for sharing.
  5. I don't understand why they felt the need to close it. As Reg says, the extended pavement is not wider that the car parking spaces that were there before it (in fact it's narrower).
  6. Awful response from the Council. They really ought to be able to answer your question. Perhaps escalate it to one of our local Councillors?
  7. Thanks Mrs B. Sorry you had to go through this.
  8. The issue is much bigger than 'racists'. The real problem is the structural disadvantage that's 'baked in' to most of our systems, process, institutions and culture. Most people aren't racist in the traditional, widely understood sense of the word. But we are all complicit in a system which marginalises, alienates and / or simply puts up hurdles for various groups. Taking the knee feels like an easy bit of gesture politics to me. I'm not necessarily against it, but do wonder whether it achieves much (it might even be counter productive in terms of moving on the 'national debate' about race).

The depressing thing is, it's all 'priced in' with our Vote Leave government. People seem to know and accept that they're dishonest and incompetent, but still prefer them to any of the alternatives. None of it makes any difference
  10. Tried to send something to Spain via Amazon today. That?s suddenly become a massive pain because of new customs restrictions. I know it?s small potatoes in terms of Brexit, but just another thing that was simple made more difficult by this ridiculous exercise in self harm

  12. I find it incredible that the police would not take this more seriously. I hope they catch this guy quickly.
  13. At what point will the UK stop blaming our problems on the EU?
  14. Of course, there'll be plenty of damage done in the meantime, but sadly, not to Johnson's career - the advancement of which driven quite a lot of this sorry circus.
  15. I also suspect that as soon as Johnson thinks it's politically safe to do so, he'll start pivoting his position subtly towards a closer relationship with the EU. As Sephiroth says it's in the country's interests and so as long as the countries interests don't run counter to his own personal, political interests, he'll change direction.

I was joking about rejoining the EU to get round the problems with the NI protocol. It was in response to Keeno suggesting Ireland should leave the EU for the same reason. Both obviously ridiculous. The truth is that we made a choice to leave the single market and the customs union and the consequence is checks on goods leaving and entering the EU. This means either a border on the Island of Ireland or in the Irish sea. We can probably reduce the amount of friction, but not remove it entirely. The Irish Sea solution does align NI more closely with the Republic and make it more distant from the rest of the UK in terms of trade. Over time this is going to increase tensions and calls for reunification. It's one of the inevitable consequences of decisions made by the UK government. It was well discussed before those decisions where taken. There is no point blaming the EU

  18. I've sent you a PM. I may have seen something relevant.
  19. I find it really weird that they let people park on Strakers Road which seems to avoid the car parking fees. It's impossible for two cars to pass each other on Strakers Raod when cars are parked up on it, and you often see people having to repeatedly reverse back down to the car park when trying to leave because a car coming the other way. It seems like an accident waiting to happen.
  20. Agree with Malumbu. Making it easier to drive around Lambeth is not going to encourage people out of their cars, and it's cars which cause pollution.
  21. Some good recommendations here: /forum/read.php?5,2126560,2126560#msg-2126560
  22. @ab29 - seriously? Calling someone a ?know-it-all, arrogant cyclist', isn't name calling? I mean it's probably pointless to even have this discussion, but I would just point out that at no point have I resorted to personal attacks against you.
  23. Which locker was broken into? Cyrena Road?
  24. @Rockets - totally agree. I wasn't suggesting that we narrow the focus to just cars. I'm definitely not suggesting that we start a 'war on motorists' either. I'm a motorist.
  25. @ab29 - I just took a look back. So far you have called me ?arrogant and selfish? a ?know-it-all, arrogant cyclist? suggested that I ?don?t care about anyone else? (using ALL CAPS) and accused me of suffering from a ?complete lack of empathy? (again using ALL CAPS). It?s possible we have different, but still honestly held, views. Not sure name calling is strictly necessary.
