  1. ...hopefully other Councils will show more leadership and allow the trials to run their full course. It will give an opportunity for people to genuinely compare and contrast .
  2. Wandsworth have knee jerked at the inevitable push back from a long indulged and entitled minority being asked to share a bit more space with others. Interestingly though, the traffic jams caused by increases in people cycling and driving coming out of the lockdown (and as a result of people avoiding public transport in the face of COVID), have not eased. It will be interesting to see what people put congestion down to now that all the planters have been removed AND the alternatives to using a car in areas like Tooting, are to become less appealing once more.
  3. @Abe - seriously? You think other cyclists represent a bigger danger than motor vehicles when you're on a bike? I agree that there are some absolute lycra tw*ts, but they're the same idiots who drive their audis at speed the rest of the time - in other words idiots are gonna idiot whatever they're doing. But I can't honestly believe that you feel they're more dangerous on a bike ,than in a car.

Cycling too but emphasis should be on > the first. I agree with this. I would like to see a lot more investment in public transport, but that is probably a longer term project.
  5. If you go outside your house you can see how much space is given over to cars. There is tons of metal sitting on every single street, most of it rarely moving. If we want to make it easier for people to use alternatives, then we need to create safe, quiet and clean routes for cycling and walking (and invest in public transport). Most people are terrified to cycle on roads often dominated by bigger and bigger (pseudo military) vehicles... Many regularly ignoring the speed limits. We have created a hostile environment for anyone wishing to take to two wheels. Is that really an constructive situation? There is a role for cars clearly, but the amount of space they are allocated is completely out of proportion and it crowds out other types of transport. The entitlement many feel when it comes to their cars needs to be challenged for what it is. The reaction to some really mild attempts to create space for (mainly) pedestrians, just highlights how indulged the car lobby have become imo.
  6. I believe the government are looking to make them legal. In reality they are used fairly widely now and the police seem to tolerate them.

The lights there definitely need rephasing.

If we just allow cars to dominate every single street, The problem of road deaths, obesity, pollution and congestion will probably fix themselves.

Not meaning to scaremonger. I linked to the details you shared above. It?s good that traffic flows are improving. Could be linked to significant increase in cycling, congestion charge etc. Will be interesting g to see what difference these latest changes make if given enough time to bed in. It is also true that car ownership in the UK is increasing btw. Not a sustainable trend. Hopefully London can continue to lead the way.

I?m not actually part of any campaign or ?lobby?. Just a local resident who would prefer low traffic neighbourhoods.
  11. @slartiB - Probably some good data here: https://data.london.gov.uk/dataset/traffic-flows-borough I haven't got time to look through it right now, so can't tell you whether or not it shows an increase.
  12. There is this: http://content.tfl.gov.uk/technical-note-12-how-many-cars-are-there-in-london.pdf Suggests that car ownership has slightly dropped in London. Of course, much of the traffic doesn't necessarily originate in London (i.e. people driving in).
  13. Registered vehicles on UK roads: 1991: 20 million 2007: 27 million 2016: 37 million 2020: 38.3 million (2022: 40 million)

Could it just possibly be that congestion is caused ? and air pollution is made worse ? not by cycleways, or opening streets to pedestrians, but by too many motor vehicles?!
  15. Just a reminder of how bad EDG was before
  16. Out of interest, where do people think the traffic on east dulwich Grove x lordship lane would go if Calton Avenue was reopened?surely it would still end up on EDG or LL?
  17. Rockets Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Ex - depends on who you speak to!!! It's either > nirvana or armageddon and nothing in between! ;-) It?s neither. There has been some displacement of traffic and a few Rush hour hotspots that need to be mitigated. But neither is there the carmaggedon that some are claiming. I do think people are forgetting what things were like pre- lockdown too. It was not uncommon for there to be significant congestion running up to the south circular for example. It?s all got to be set against the benefits / improvements in certain areas too.
  18. Why would closing a street to motor traffic reduce footfall? Anyway, I hope business picks up, I wish you the best.
  19. I'm fairly sure that businesses on Melbourne Grove will do better without the traffic.
  20. I wish I could make traffic disappear, although I suspect there would be a lot of opposition to it.
  21. It's pretty clear to me that there is not the widespread gridlock some people are claiming. There are high levels of traffic during rush hour, but it was always so. I do wonder whether the temporary respite caused by the lockdown has led people to forget what the roads were like before.
  22. Here is what? Do you mean his encouraging people to try and vote twice?
  23. I always liked Tony Hart 😂
  24. @bicknell - I have noticed an increase in traffic on Townley (I think I commented on this earlier in the thread). It was quiet at 5 today, but I accept that might not be the case at other times.
