Well, what do we think now? Right wing press will be having a hey day. Not sure why there is this tendency in Labour to destroy from within. Still know people who think JC is God. That's a secular God of course.

malumbu replied to Thunderblue600's topic in The Lounge
Aren't there 1000s of Elvis impersonators, why is this one special? I do quite a good impression myself - She is watching the detectives, "Ooh, it's so cute", She's watching the detectives, When they shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot They beat him up until the teardrops start, But he can't be wounded 'cause he's got no heart Then I go into Steve Nieve doing his organ solo. Wonderful. -

Who or what is Elvis from Nunhead, I could Google it, but best if you explain. -
Nigello Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Malumbu - I am not a petrol head (or battery head?) at all, not having driven for more than twenty years, so how come hybrids are not all that good for the environment? Hybrids were only a stepping stone to zero emission, the technology for the conventional ones - Prius being the good example - is now quite dated, and in terms of CO2 emissions there are some conventional cars that are just as good. The UK is a big manufacturing base for Toyota that may have influenced previous government's position. Plug in hybrids (PHEV) are a better option if you do most of your driving around town, as long as they are regularly charged. Up the motorway may have higher CO2 emissions as they are heavier than conventional cars and have a small electric only range. Purchase price is also an issue. The Mitsubishi Outlander remains the most popular PHEV - but as much of this is business use will often run on conventional fuel and there is some evidence that many owners can't be rrrssed to plug them in costing both the environment and their employers (essentially very cheap to run on electric only, particularly with subsidised charging). The PHEV I most liked was the Transit van, because it felt like a Transit van. On charge points I like the Southwark ones on the lamp posts, up the road our lamp posts are not roadside. I used petrol head as a facetious term, in the same way as tree hugger, bit of banter, bit self deprecatory. It is not intended as an insult but others may use it this way. My favourite battery hugger is Kryten aka Robert Llewellyn. Link to his channel on his passion https://fullycharged.show/ Good to see more balance on this thread, I'll avoid my subtle as a sledgehammer approach. Remember 80% of cyclists also have a driving license. Shame that 80% of drivers don't also cycle.

I lost my key to my bike lock once. It was chained to a lamp post very close to the (old) New Scotland Yard. I hired a bolt cropper and removed it. Nobody batted an eyelid. On the belief that the activity was genuinely suspicious I am grateful to anyone reporting this; worst case is that it is totally innocent. If it was a legitimate removal of a dumped bike or one on private land then those taking it would be in some sort of livery. Vehicles going up and down the road looking for scrap and junk are usually open caged trucks. Of course normally I'd be defending those accused by the twitching curtains brigade.

Looks good then. Houses will have suffered during droughts in the last forty five years, many Victorian and Edwardian properties will be underpinned. The area was also bombed so movement there, and few houses of your age will be perfectly straight. It's South London clay so a problem for the whole area - gardens crack in summer and are waterlogged from the Autumn. Be worth checking with neighbours and with insurers as some may not cover the area, but each will have a different approach to this risk and similarly the premium.

chuffin brillant, thanks so much, I'm a pretty liberal person but steeling bikes is pretty pooey.

I doubt whether many under 30 would understand stuff about being stooped by the police. Very common to be pulled over when I was a young driver/motorcyclist and there would often be a dubious reason - get this or the other checked out. Any back chat and it would be come down the station or some other threat. I remember showing two officers my Jersey Driving License meaning I could ride up to 250cc without a UK license (I got one of those not long after) to be told that they could nick me for anything. Don't ever say "haven't you got anything better to do/criminals to arrest rather than harass law abiding citizens". There tends to be a sense of humour failure there... I'm being light-hearted but this is from real experience albeit in another age. Sorry, lounge talk.

Oh and I have to tie down feeders as the fluffy tailed rats try to get them onto the ground where they can more easily chew through to the food. Or simply the act of knocking them to the ground releases some of it.
-
Ta everso. Nice that you are encouraging wildlife. I used car grease on my pole (ho ho) but for some reason upside down football cones have also put them off. Parakeets come close but yet to invade. Genuinely went through 5 x more feed in 2019 so something has affected the birds - hopefully that there is more food generally available.

Other things to consider, weight of car, size of engine and ancillaries. The near universal adoption of air conditioning together with heavier cars in the 00s put back some gains in efficiency (particularly with more diesels) and then then greater sales of SUV (and now cross) vehicles put back a general improving in fuel efficiency. If you drive a hot hatch from 40 years ago it is so light (half the weight of some cars now) it feels like it will disintegrate on collision. Reducing the weight and power of cars would help, in particular for predominantly urban areas would be beneficial. Manufacturers have to meet average CO2 targets set by that pesky EU intervening in our national affairs (there is of course an opportunity to set even more ambitious targets for the UK - we shall see!) - manufacturers produce more frugal cars to meet this - and for those who traditionally didn't produce cars they achieve it, for example, with a special range (Merc and smart cars), but then generally still try to sell you the lifestyle that you need to be in a SUV/cross. This is back to what you drive, how you drive (most of us could up our fuel efficiency by 10% by better anticipation and lighter touch acceleration and braking) and how often you drive. As regards to electric cars my experience of a Leaf was you drove at a gentle speed smiling and waving at people. The Tessla was just stupid driving it around West London near the dealer. That does seem like a vanity purchase but noticing them all the time. Conventional hybrids pretty stupid too - should have been discouraged but we have manufacturing interests in the UK. A final point is utility. We embed a fair amount of carbon in producing the thing, and then it lies idle for 95% of the time. I'll seriously be looking at car clubs in the near future. When I really need a car. The view above is from my own knowledge and experience. But do read this article - car mag not a group of tree huggers. An extract includes: 'But there's no getting away from the fact the UK new-car fleet average CO2 rose for a third consecutive year in 2019 ? up 2.7% to 127.9g/km. It makes the industry's goal of averaging 95g/km by next year a seemingly impossible mission. Recycling - anyone know where I can recycle 04 plastics?
malumbu replied to Elly_B's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Here's a nice article from Which? but it wont be helpful for your query - I've not found anything on line and I find it highly frustrating that so much plastic is not easily recyclable, worse still is specifically non-recyclable. Ferrero rocher or Pringles anyone? To add insult to injury the manufacturers make humour of it with up-cycling suggestions. In parts of France they have simply banned plastic carrier, veg, and fruit bags, replacing them with biodegradable or paper bags. Sorry a tiny rant. Hope others can be more positive. https://www.which.co.uk/reviews/recycling/article/how-to-recycle-in-the-uk-ajwEz4p63Qs6 -
diable rouge Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- here's an example from the same newspaper, another article about a wealthy young footballer doing the sensible and right thing and buying property to protect his and his.... In deed, and another selfish young non-specific ethnicity footballer (Tosin Adarabioyo) daring to buy a home. Not sure why they didn't put him in digs with a nice landlady/lord https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5253633/Man-City-footballer-20-25k-week-buys-market-2-25m-home.html I'll not look any further as it is too easy to expose the DH. Although nipple tapes do sound exciting.

I did see that he has patented his name in the States, allowing him to use his brand for such thing as 'grooming products' - it all looks rather nefarious to me.... Sorry just using this to show how ludicrous the DM/DH article is. I'm sure we are all aware that grooming products refers to hair and face care.

flu jab - Tessa Jowell practice - safe?
malumbu replied to trinidad's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
If you have Covid you should self isolate, contact NHS 101 etc, 999 if an emergency and not go to the clinic unless instructed. If you don't believe you have Covid but are worried about going to a clinic, I an others can reassure you that this is as safe as they can make it. I'e attended TJ Centre, Kings and Tootling donor centre in recent months. All very good, Couldn't get an appointment at FH Road but that is a separate story... -

Put a photo of your feeders up. You've missed out wood pigeons, they even try to get at the feeders and the most ridiculous sight was on trying to eat the niger seeds that had fallen onto the feeder tray. We use both suet balls and pellets, at times the balls are popular. I've noticed that the Aldi suet balls less popular than the ones I got on line. Never had any luck with seeds and nuts. Dried meal worms are eaten but pricey. But don't you have squirrels trying to get at stuff? I scatter pellets from time to time for the ground feeders, but the rats with fluffy tales eat the pellets.

Re: bike parking From "Gear change .... government's cycling and walking bold vision" Extracted the relevant paragraph; sorry don't know how to highlight the stuff on residential bike parking.... (admin it would be useful to use bold or colour on text) https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/904146/gear-change-a-bold-vision-for-cycling-and-walking.pdf "We will increase cycle parking and ensure that it goes where it is needed We will install more cycle racks in town and city centres and where they are most needed, including at transport interchanges and public buildings including hospitals and schools. Cycle racks should not be installed where they are unlikely to be used and we will promote the importance of high quality, accessible and secure designs that will encourage increased use and discourage theft. In residential areas, we will fund more bike hangars and other secure on-street storage, for people who do not have space to keep their bikes at home. We will continue to work with key stakeholders to develop new standards for sufficient secure bike storage in all new residential and non-residential developments."

Disappointed that I could not find any funny vids on Cummings leaving so this will have to do, second risque one of the day and worth seeing the following goodbye vids - a bit sickening

Bad taste guys but if you want a really effective killer this chap would be ideal https://thebestpictureproject.wordpress.com/tag/javier-bardem/

Damn, beaten to it, was planning to post a thread "Cummings leaving card" to allow people to post nice things like "good riddance" (or things much stronger) The plagiarise something that I have been shown - Trump going, a Covid vaccine and now comings gone - a good week Otherwise still think we are fcked but one less thing to pee me off. wonder what middle England, and the Midlands, NE and NW Blue wall think.

Link to PM on promoting cycling. As said this is coming from the top (unholy alliance between a surprisingly interventionist Tory government and labour local authorities?). I'll try to avoid inflaming the argument, and just post factual stuff and links, as you will have gathered my opinion by now https://www.cyclist.co.uk/news/8185/boris-johnson-obsessed-with-encouraging-cycling

Specially for today (what is the connection?) and with apologies as it is ever so slightly risque (less that many modern vids) but a lovely song and deeply missed singer -
Long tailed tits are so cute. They come and go and not seen any pattern. You get them along the Horniman Nature Trail. To me they have little baby faces. Of course you should not anthropomorphise animals.....

Cress has commented about racism in the police - still there, but zero tolerance and in the summer she was quoted as saying that the MPS was no longer institutionally racist. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-54917571 As a youngster I was always being stopped by the filth. Young person driving an old car. I remember being pulled up when on foot near football matches in the 90s and 00s - I didn't fit the football hooligan profile so this was just down to abuse of power and ignorance. Once was for having a can of beer near the Spurs ground and ordered to pour it down the drain. When I said why are you allowing touts to sell tickets, which is illegal, I was invited down to the station to discuss this further. The other was when I was chatting to a copper walking back from the Boleyn and literally got tugged by another PC. When I say talking I was literally having a chat and joke with the first officer who was stewarding the away fans to the tube, at a time when ambushes by the locals was regular. No it was not West Ham Millwall.... I wrote to another constabulary praising them for their policing in a match last December so hope I am balanced.
