*Heritage Restaurant - Rosendale Road West Dulwich*
malumbu replied to DayashankarSharma's topic in The Lounge
Obviously you got used to the taste of the beer Trinny, found it awful when we were there twenty odd years ago - I think it is the glycerine added as a preservative. It was also strange buying this in brown paper bags in some states. Also seemed strange paying more for a beer than the (decent) guest houses we stayed in. Briefly visited Panaji in the 00s where being in Goa it was better and cheap. When we went back two years ago to States in the East there now seems to be a taste for super strength beer which is even more undrinkable. Telling that virtually all Indian branded beer here is brewed in Europe. As this is a thread advertising an Indian restaurant I recommend that you also try the Babur for modern Indian fusion food, although not cheap - like the Heritage. My fave is the India Club on the strand although that may not last Covid if it is still open at all. https://www.babur.info/ https://www.theindiaclub.co.uk/menu -
Worried that you were talking about Brexiteers, not sure how well a Gammon goes with a Woke

You need to hurt the driver. This is from someone who drives. I don't drive into central London due to the congestion charge. I'd been successfully put off by it being increasingly difficult to drive. I'd stopped going via the Elephant following the redesign - done to smooth flows from other directions. I'd given up on my back route through Farringdon due to congestion. I've avoided Court Lane and the Village at certain times for donkeys years. But at no point have I whinged on this site about this. Am I the only one who says that I can't be bothered to drive many of these routes any more. Of course I'm happy to cycle most of them, but at times I may need a car. I've made the point many times that the lack of balls from successive governments to do this properly is the issue, from Labour doing an about turn on its pro public transport stance after the fuel protests. This lot are even worse due to their mixed messages. But don't hold your breath (not meant to be a pun) Ask anyone outside the capital or visitors to London about public transport and they think it is wonderful. Not sure why we knock it so much. Over to you Rockets. What is the next cheap insult going to be?

But then there is a contradiction. So many that enjoyed travelling to the continent voted to leave. Based on a limited sample of Tamworth, where immigration played a part in the decision. And the love/hate relationship with the French - with both sides 'hating' each other but loving to visit each others countries. I suppose even worse for Germany, where we pretended to hate them but we are almost the same people. Sorry, not exactly earth shattering.

It's about policing/enforcement which didn't happen I expect due to resources. Official surveys showed that most people behaved themselves in lockdown one because they believed in the measures rather than fear of prosecution. Not so as time continued for a variety of reasons. Apols of laying into Enfield, it shouldn't be characterised by one scummy pub. I expect you would get similar views as you come to some of the outer boroughs on this side of the Thames - white working class in multicultural areas who consider that the country has changed for the worst. Like my late Auntie in Cricklewood - although she would just say inappropriate comments rather than out and out hatred which shocked me.

English did become the defacto language. They all speak it so well. We are rubbish at learning other languages. Rule Britannia.

Rockets, just step back mate/mate-ess and let it go. I became obsessed with planing decisions in the late 00s. Started taking over my life. But even then I didn't resort to cheap insults. For a final time, we are all part of the problem. Love and peace.

Nonsense, wealth is a limitation but you still have some choice. I chose to work in London. I chose to live in SE London. I could have lived in the Medway Towns where price of accommodation is cheaper and put up with an 1 1/2 commute. I could have stayed in the NW where cost of living is much cheaper.

Link again to earlier TfL work, supported for example by asthma charities https://tfl.gov.uk/info-for/media/press-releases/2012/september/londoners-encouraged-to-make-a-small-switch-to-curb-engine-emissions Ultimately most of us make decisions on where to live, where to work, where to send our kids to school, what to buy, how to buy and where to buy, and leisure activities. This does not underestimate the improvements to our personal quality of life that car ownership for the masses has brought for the last six decades, but sometimes at a cost.

Still wont let me post the full text so maybe the link will work. Nxjen said things succinctly. Here's an article on TfL measures 8 years ago [tfl.gov.uk] So it is nonsense that to say the authorities haven't been doing anything. The campaign which included schools may not have been effective but how many of you took note?

Test post as I have been having problems posting. Perhaps that is a good thing!

One of the benefits of lockdown was reconnecting with my sibblings through Zoom, in a weekly quiz. Who needs to go down the pub and get legless on a Friday when you can have a pizza, glass or two of wine, a natter and some fun. Xmas falls on a Friday so this will be a shorter get together rather than the full two hours. We are not estranged but one lives over the pond and the others 120 miles away so it works well.
-
Not really sure why you post if you don't have anything to say. The pub in Enfield could have been anywhere, it was just indicative of why we had to into Tier 3.
-
Kalamity - bit rich ss there has been no debate, I posted an article but nobody has debated it. Just a series of unhelpful experiences. Apart from Trinidad who had something useful to say.
-
Yew perhaps ask if anyone knows how to address this (as pre last post) rather than go into keyboards warier mode. I've had excellent service many times, but occasionally have some frustrations. But never think of putting up a thread on this forum. In fact it is a shame that people don't post positive experiences.

It's as if pollution didn't exist before the LTN. Air quality has been improving since the clean air acts of the 1950s. It as if you simply wave a magic wand and everybody changes their behaviour. Many drivers wont. I'm passionate about the environment and this frustrates me like hell, but what also frustrates me is the incredibly narrow focus of the discussions here. And blanket statements like pollution is killing our children. I'm not underestimating the impact, but some of our most vulnerable will also be in substandard housing, low employment, poor nutrition etc etc. I do hope that today's coroner's ruling has an impact on the psyche of the country as a whole. When I was more involved in this area I was happy to have a poster campaign of cars idling outside school with exhausts going into the kid's faces, but was told that shock tactics (eg cigarette packaging) did not influence those you most wanted to target. I also thought that parents doing this, parking on the pavement etc should be named and shamed. But told that there were legal reasons that you couldn't do this. So with great delight I found a school in Scotland that did exactly that putting up photos of parents. Sorry that's a bit like North Korea.

Well I checked out the Blythe but it was too crowded and ended up in the ninth life in Catford which had excellent social distancing etc. I was at Enfield for a funeral today and ended up having a Guinness afterwards in a sports bar. No Covid measures whatsoever and felt very uncomfortable and didn't stay long. Sadly this is why we have to close our pubs. Enfield is also pretty horrid (sorry for my snobbery). Pub was also full of white racists, comments I hadn't heard since the 1980s. Obviously I live in a bubble.

HELP, what are the rules about driving through Dul' Village
malumbu replied to peckhamside's topic in Roads & Transport
I cycle down to the village when I need something there, it's a joy now the junction with Court Lane is closed to motorised traffic. Although the only shop i use is the toy shop and art stationers. -
Fortunately these views across Europe have generally died out. There is still a nationalist rump, even worse in this country. For heavens sake I have so many good friends and colleagues across Europe, and feel insulted by the sentiment posted above. Maybe its a wind up but reminds me of the National Front's position on Europe in the 70s. What is worrying is that this is the first time in my life that it is seen to be good to look down on the educated - not those who have been privileged but those state educated like myself who took full advantage on what the state provided. Sadly it is some of the privileged that stoked up this hatred. I'm so tempted to swear like at the beginning of Four Weddings and a Funeral. Aghhhhh

I went. It is busy. Just be sensible and keep your distance. In the spread of Covid it isn't outdoor markets to blame - those mixing in doors and schools I expect. Can't blame the poor students as they are locked in on campus and have mostly been tested. Om a political point it is all sections of society that are to blame. You can turn your nose up at Thanet, but even posh boroughs like Bromley are on the rise.

I'm part of this (Lewisham) https://www.walkingforhealth.org.uk/walkfinder/lewisham-healthy-walks PM me if you would like to get involved. There is a lovely walk in Wells Park. Others are looking at Waterlink Way. I do some other walks - Dulwich Park, the Rye, One Tree Hill, The various cemeteries, Ruskin park and more. There is now a 9am walk meeting at Honor Oak Station. Numbers have dropped off due to pandemic, I did some Zoom walks which were poorly attended as those they were targeted at probably aren't always computer savvy.

HELP, what are the rules about driving through Dul' Village
malumbu replied to peckhamside's topic in Roads & Transport
In deed That's why I didn't lob in an insult, there was no sarcasm in my comment, although trouble is you can read the written word in so many ways. I have to defer to the Late Father Jack if I use sarcasm. But yes, please do 'ban' Xmas and spread the celebrations and joy over the remainder of the year. I don't believe in God but quite happy to celebrate the solstice. We could then add every other pagan, religious and other reasons to celebrate (30 July 1966, Birthdays of Nelson Mandela, David Attenborough, George Soros, Joseph Rowntree, Morrissey, oh no not Morrissey...., nor Bono or Chris Martin) https://www.spectator.co.uk/article/coldplay-s-sanctimonious-politics-is-as-boring-as-their-music -
Naughty naughty. The strain may be worse in terms of transmission but not so far in resistance to the vaccine. Might sneak off to the Blythe for a last pint and pizza tomorrow - outdoors. First time I've visited a pub for weeks and yes I'm with you Jimlad, I do miss it

Link to the report https://www.rac.co.uk/drive/features/report-on-motoring-2020/ I've got my own copy as funnily enough I work in transport. I'm a glass half full person, but not a glass 36% full. I'm also worried that others may live in a parallel universe. London has been congested for decades, certainly since I visited as a child and since I have lived in the capital. And same true of other major cities. Welcome to the real world.

From the RAC Report on Motoring 2020 published today -sorry I haven't got a link yet. Sad reflection on motorist's views as a whole re the environment. If we can all take a bit more responsibility we wouldn't be having many of the discussions on this thread: The 2020 Report on Motoring asked motorists what steps they would be willing to take ? or are already taking ? to reduce their personal emissions? footprints. This year, fewer drivers would be willing to swap their cars for bikes or e-scooters on short journeys in order to cut their emissions: only 36% would be happy to do this, or are already doing this, compared with 39% last year. As we have discussed in section 1.2, the pandemic has led to a greater feeling of importance attached to vehicles ? in part due to fears of the infection risk linked to public transport. Accordingly, there has been a sharp decline in the number of motorists who would be willing to give up using their vehicles altogether for environmental reasons: only 5% say they would consider this, compared with 14% last year.
