This got delivered through my door ('truth and tradition'), with a sister paper the Vision Times and a leaflet on the Chinese Communist Party and petition to 'eliminate this' organisation I first thought that this must be connected with the LTN, then perhaps something to do with the old Soviet Union. The papers seem good quality and well written but only have the story line of atrocities in China, its involvement in geopolitics and eliminating the CCP. I could look on Google what this is all about, but thought I'd check whether others had received this right riveting read. I can't recall subscribing to it. Although I look forward to the next editions which will be no doubt about the link between President Elect Biden, CCP and no dought QAnon will come into it somewhere.

Anyway to return to the subject, I've done lots of marches in the past, the odd one turning nasty (poll tax being the best example) and was in Whitehall when a few thousand students were kettled there in 2010, but never experienced a situation where the police were not able to maintain control. Wasn't at Luton when Millwall ran the OB but that is another story. Be interesting to hear why they were so poorly prepared.

Beg to differ, the generic American IPA is totally overflavoured fizz made in beer factories not small artisan breweries in Oregan. Twenty odd years ago it was very different. A small brewer from the UK, Peter Austin, revolutionised the craft beer industry in the states being credited with the setting up of 74 small breweries there. https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2014/jan/09/peter-austin Trouble is after a week of this type of beer, or a week of Meantime, you just want something more subtle - British ale, or even German or Czech lager. So you go out to a trendy pub or bar and there are six fizzy expensive beers on tap, 5 to 6 % all overhopped American IPA styles. Some zingy with lemon, or worse still with flowers in them. But it's another great example of emperor's new clothes - like krispy kremes and harabo sweets. the food of the devil I am sure others can tell us of the good old days of ice cider/lager, alcopops and tasteless Mexican style beer with a lime in it. I enjoyed my beer drinking in the states in the last century, and came across the most wonderfully stocked off license in the world in Colorado with both new and old world beers. They almost had a heart attack as one of us opened their can of beer - NO THIS IS NOT AN OPEN LIQUOR STATE (ie you cannot consume alcohol in public) Not sure how this thread got onto American beer.

Burgess Park Covid Testing Centre - anyone else waiting for results?

Wow, I misread your sentiments ST. I thought that you were being ironic and simply provoking conversation. Hadn't realised that you were bitter and twisted. KK to note that I am the former not the latter, most of my posts are in good humour. Apart from the whining about traffic controls. PS I got tested in Greenwich and there didn't seem to be any issue about being tested, and a nice distraction (not a lot else to do!) -
Closing the borders is rather a complex issue. Fine if you are an island the other end of the world, where you are not getting ferries and a rail tunnel supplying you with food and essential goods, in particular through 1000s of HGVs. We're pretty integrated with mainland Europe. So you need to be selective and as well as Wuhan hit those coming back from the ski resorts in Austria and Italy - I think the Germans and Austrians did this. And then other countries with the first wave. Then you can bring in self isolation from at risk countries, with decent enforcement, and ultimately close borders eg with South Africa but interesting that only the UK appears to have gone this far compared to similar countries. The testing before entry is fundamentally flawed which is why it hasn't been our default position as this only captures the time that you were tested, not the following days when you could become contagious (and for the many asymptomatic not even know this). Demonstrated by Moeen Ali on the flight on the way over to Sri Lanka for the test series (assuming that this was not a false negative in the UK) https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/55532526 And this is all to protect us from those bringing it in from overseas, where this is now the other way round as even accounting for higher testing in the UK we have so much higher levels.

Obviously I am too subtle for you KK. Pleased to see John L got it. KK the word is fanatic : a person filled with excessive and single-minded zeal, especially for an extreme religious or political cause. You could argue Poll Tax protesters and those storming the Bastille were fanatics. Others may have called them idiots at the time.
-
Link to the storming of the Bastille https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-55555074 John L you can't just brand these people idiots. Perhaps have some appreciation of the bigger picture, Trump toxicity, polarisation of the country, media bias etc. It would be like branding leavers as idiots. Oh wait a second.......

Government do a lot to measure public opinion. Official surveys/trackers show that in Lockdown #1 most people did the right thing because they believed in it rather than the threat of enforcement. Later there was more resistance eg not believing the science, younger people being asymptomatic, conspiracy theories, boredom etc etc. Independence Day (4th July) will have had an impact, and Cummings can not have made things better. On a point of principle he should have jumped or been pushed. I don't think any other PM would have stood by him. That is not a scientific study, but it is pretty self evident, we have a PM telling us we have beaten the enemy, we relax.

You could also use Tom Robinson as an example Yes I digress
-
Can you put these sentiment to music Sparticus - I'd love to the video - you could use Thatcher and Churchill as an influence. Just teasing

To go back to a previous post of mine, looking at the data things seem so much worse in the UK due to the new variant. There was a certain feeling that it was rife across Europe and they simply weren't looking for it as well as we were. But London and the SE is truly shocking, even vs the rest of the country. Perhaps it is only a matter of time before everywhere else catches up. But it destroys the whole premise of this thread that things are better here.

As ever we the consumer, traveller etc are much of the problem, we want things now, and we want to return them when they don't fit tomorrow. Needs 'big government' to sort it. I'll see what I can find out - not so easy now everything has to be done virtually (ironically of course reducing the need to travel). But there is also counter arguments about the efficiency of home deliveries vs driving to the shops. Not sure i believe all the negative stuff about HGVs running a third empty - went to a summit in the early 10s when heard that this was very different. It was also interesting the hear about the barriers to shifting to rail. One fact I can share without breaking any commercial confidentiality is that many of our stations have become shopping centres, yet none of the goods are moved by rail. Not sure what the future of Victoria, London Bridge, Liverpool Street etc retail space is now though.

safest masks to protect ourselves against covid??

Measure to show that your mask is effective, blowing out candles is not helpful for reducing the likelihood of transmission! -
safest masks to protect ourselves against covid??
malumbu replied to TwinkleToes's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
We wear masks to protect others, to reduce likelihood of droplets reaching them. Blowing out a candle is a good measure. Government advice is the best place to go for information https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/face-coverings-when-to-wear-one-and-how-to-make-your-own/face-coverings-when-to-wear-one-and-how-to-make-your-own Medical masks are there for a different purpose ie protecting those on the front line, again good government advice https://www.gov.uk/guidance/regulatory-status-of-equipment-being-used-to-help-prevent-coronavirus-covid-19?utm_source=Gov&utm_medium=Email&utm_campaign=MHRA_COVID-19_updates&utm_content=HCP7#face-masks-and-face-coverings extracting from this: Face coverings intended for use by the general public are not PPE or medical devices. As such they do not carry a CE mark and should not be sold or donated as PPE or medical devices. -
Thought that Google is quite useful at telling you how busy a place is https://www.google.com/search?q=sainsburys%20east%20dulwich&rlz=1C1GCEV_enGB856GB856&oq=sainsburys+east+dulwich&aqs=chrome..69i57j46j0l5j46.9275j0j8&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&safe=active&tbs=lf:1,lf_ui:4&tbm=lcl&rflfq=1&num=10&rldimm=2162450071266650480&lqi=ChdzYWluc2J1cnlzIGVhc3QgZHVsd2ljaCIDiAEBSJPvk4LmgICACForCgpzYWluc2J1cnlzEAAYABgCIhdzYWluc2J1cnlzIGVhc3QgZHVsd2ljaA&ved=2ahUKEwiC1KjNnIXuAhVRTxUIHZXXCaMQvS4wAXoECAEQJA&rlst=f#rlfi=hd:;si:2162450071266650480,l,ChdzYWluc2J1cnlzIGVhc3QgZHVsd2ljaCIDiAEBSJPvk4LmgICACForCgpzYWluc2J1cnlzEAAYABgCIhdzYWluc2J1cnlzIGVhc3QgZHVsd2ljaA;mv:[[51.4808124,-0.0066419],[51.4142103,-0.119979]];tbs:lrf:!1m4!1u3!2m2!3m1!1e1!2m1!1e3!3sIAE,lf:1,lf_ui:4 eg currently it is not too busy. Have no knowledge about the accuracy or whether one can go straight to a CCTV feed.

I thought that you would have approved of ST provoking some discussion Cat. I considered that he/she was being tongue in cheek, and even if it wasn't there is a point there. He wont be the first or last to attack some of the (occasional) pomposity on this site. ST - worth coming down the Hamlet some time, when crowds allowed back in Dog Kennel Hill (you can also take the opportunity to visit Sainsburys ED, very different the Savecenter in Lower Sydenham). Ah, Cat, got me there, you were also being tongue in cheek. Isn't what that Buzzard chap does?

Good reminder, I haven't fly tipped my tree yet on someone else's street. There wont be a base on it as you may be able to trace me otherwise.

Going back to rumours and conspiracy theories I have come up with my own. Us plucky Brits will hopefully be able to travel in months to come with our vaccination passports. These will be like pet passports and it would be really useful if we are also chipped when we get the jab. So microchips and the vaccine are connected after all. We are indeed fortunate. I thank you Confused even more of you now.

Not really sure why you have posted a picture of Johnny Ball. But fond memories of him in any case from the 70s and 80s (not now as he is (allegedly) a climate change denier) https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/tv/tv-veteran-johnny-ball-hits-16592148 Although "think of a number" would probably work for the PM. Sorry I have confused half the readership.
-
Apols to bring up an old thread that was supposed to be about the PMs physical fitness, but after probably one of his biggest U-turns, on schools and no doubt other matters (Lockdown #3), I'd be interested in views that aren't drawn from the usual suspects (Mail, Guardian, BBC etc).

This wasn't the hat was it? https://heroes-and-villians.fandom.com/wiki/The_Cat_in_the_Hat_(Live-Action) Good luck in any case

Curiouser and curiouser. We've got a thrush, great blue and long tailed tits, dunnock, robin, maybe sparrars, wood pigeons, crowes, magpies and occasional jay, occasional gold finches and I am pretty sure a redshank in a tree at the top of the garden - I need better binoculars When we had lots of goldfinches in 2019 they were incredibly messy and much of the nyger seed germinated on the ground which was a pain. Less so now as we probably only go through 10% of the feed compared to then. We get weevils in both wheat and gram flour from time to time so it's not simply a case of quality.

Another nice measured post "speeding idiots". I've never had any problems with cyclists, youths, dogs, foreigners, footballers, joggers, mime artists, stilt walkers or ducks in Dulwich Park. Are there other groups that I should be concerned about? Not sure if I just have a different perspective on life. Thinking about dogs the ones that tend to be more threatening are the staffies or eqivalent which are owned by aggressive looking blokes. But not sure if you get them in Dulwich Park. And the crusties and their doggies on a string, but again, that's not round here.

Well good to know where the ashes will be scattered (mate scattered his father's in the Mersey too)

The above shows the danger of heresay and Twitter - there is no common view that the South African variant is vaccine tolerant. As shown in London and the South East there are dangers that mutations could be more contagious. The South Africans are good at genome sequencing. One of the concerns when the French closed the border was that 'our' variant was common across Europe, they just hadn't looked for it in the same way that we had (much for genomic sequencing in the UK than on the continent). OMG I've just said something that supports the sentiment of this thread.
