  1. We have so many water problems just up the road, always leaks but only lost water supply once in twenty years. Think it is the nature of the land - hills and clay - and age of infrastructure... Sorry not very helpful
  2. And another one, although Critical Mass will be on hold until we return to 'normality' https://www.cyclinguk.org/local-campaigners/ctc-local-campaigners-information-kit/campaigning-skills-and-tactics/tactics-an-11 I've also seen groups roller blading en masse
  3. Yay! Reclaim the streets, takes me back to the last century when life was more fun! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reclaim_the_Streets
  4. Loved Anaglypta - great to hang and looked the biz under chair rails in Victorian and Edwardian houses. Do your lounge in it and you could make it look like a pub. Whatever a pub may be??
  5. Was using NZ/Aus as an example, not an model case study (although many seem to think that we should have gone this way). Agree with your points Cat, shame others aren't as well informed. But as said when NZ/Aus do open their borders they will have to live with an element of endemic Covid-19. Worry that we will relax too soon, as we did last summer.
  6. Bit simplistic. CO2 levels were around 30% lower in pre industrial revolution times, but there was enough CO2 in the environment to sustain much higher levels of forest cover across the world. Planting more trees does not deplete CO2 to an extent that there isn't enough of it to sustain trees and forests (or plant life as a whole)
  7. Really? I got the impression that you wanted all LTNs to fail, not just ED, you seem to take every opportunity to find kindred spirits in other boroughs.
  8. Thinking of two stories today. The right wing press looking a bit Churchillian in that we fought Coronavirus on the beaches and won. OK not quite that extreme but too optimistic from my take. And Auckland closing down for three days after a small cluster. Many laud Australia, NZ and the like for their success in reducing cases to near zero. It's saved 1000s of lives and they have managed to retain some level of normality. But with lockdowns you need an exit plan. They cannot keep their borders closed for ever and eventually, no doubt when most have been vaccinated, need to open up, with the likelihood that there will be deaths, at hopefully a pretty low rate. It's clearly a mix of science and politics, harm to the economy and to the nation/health capabilities. Good to hear others' views - not looking for an excuse to throw rocks at the PM (well not this time anyway)
  9. Article about doing this https://modernize.com/homeowner-resources/other/creating-orange-peel-textured-wall But why? This reminds me of non-residential buildings - schools, offices, stairwells. Austere, institutional, not very welcoming.
  10. And once river crossings were improved many of the industrialists etc moved South to the farmlands of Dulwich. And in time when the gentleman' farms that they established were being sold on, to be developed partially for property, this led to much of the land being used for sport and recreation. Early arrival of the railways also had a big impact. Some interesting walks/talks about this. Just a bit of history, not contributing to the debate (and no, I don't live in the Village, could never have afforded, or wanted, to).
  11. The ad is great, if you are a middle class couple with young kids get Hello Fresh and this is what your life could look like. No different to many ads in playing to your aspirations. Thought these meals would be more aimed at young pros too busy to shop and cook. We had this product by chance - following a half price offer. It was OK but I get more inspiration from Saturday kitchen on the Beeb. It was a mix between - I make these myself, and mine are better, to - I couldn't be rrrsed to buy the ingredients so this is quite convenient. As it was half price it was cheaper that going to the shops. Two big buts - a lot of stock was used, which is cheating And what a lot of packaging waste, small package of cheese, small sachet of soy sauce, the stuff you have in the house alreay. Quality/nutrition/health wise much better than takeaways. About 15 years ago there was a stall as Waterloo stations where you could get the ingredients for the 'meal of the day' - thought that targeted busy commuters very well but it was a flop.
  12. Gave you my view but that doesn't stop others protesting. I'm with Nigello - don't usually post such sentiments as can come across as sycophantic or not adding to the debate. But he/she has got it spot on from my take. I'm also reflecting on a planning battle I had a few years ago. One neighbour said that he wouldn't join in with me as we were distracting the council from important work (and costing them). We both had our point, at times good to see the opposite view. Sadly a sign of my aging as I was like a bull in a china shop not so many years ago in taking the authorities on (although I remain a raving leftie!)
  13. OMG I hate spreadsheets, but Lotus 123 was the first one I used, and when I moved to London Supercalc 3 was the one of choice. People were very disparaging about Excel We had (IBM) Displaywrite 4 before we went to this new fangled windows business (or win-slow as some called it). I could go on about BT Gold. And mainframes. And Superbrain. Not that I am reminiscing. I did have a state of the art Psion at once point. And floppy discs. And useless laser discs. GUIs and GISs (tee hee). Hotmetal pro. A few years before Fortran77 or Fortran 3.

I was particularly impressed by my postings on this thread. Always good to look back and realise that one is not always being an rrrrsss. Some of the time of course.
  15. I loved the old school political graffiti, much sadly lost. Whatever happened to Slade on a wall by the Oval, supplemented by whatever happened to Terry Waite. The wall was demolished when they built a new stand at the ground. And not far away in Loughborough Junction. "Let's flip Thatcher in 1989". Got pressure washed off about ten years later. Should have been listed. Sadly no images on line. Here's some others (PS Clapton is not God, he's (allegedly) a racist). https://londonist.com/2015/01/10-london-graffiti-slogans-from-the-last-50-years A nearby fave was by Horniman Gardens where someone had graffiti'd I'd like to X@!** your mother. The profanity had been amended to 'help your mother'. Nice one.
  16. I struggle with this too. I've been at environmental protests in the past, supported those digging in, locking on and climbing up at the Crystal Palace Campaign and the like, yet feel like there are currently bigger battles. In particular in reducing emissions - sad that so many on this site are opposed to measures to reduce road traffic. Needs to be a holistic approach to the environment, not just particular causes. That's a personal view, I wont be lobbying campaigners telling them they are wrong!
  17. Hate crime, taken very seriously by the authorities/police. Zero tolerance on hate crime.
  18. Au contraire. Think it is great to see those out doing mass exercising, boot camp, tai chi etc. Reminds of travelling in SE Asia, whatever that means and wherever that is. Remember walking down to the Thames in Abingdon one still warm night many years ago and a couple in the meadows on the other side were at it hammer and tongs. You could hear rather than see. Amused me, and why not! (ie why not take advantage of a nice evening)
  19. Question to all, why do most refer to the PM by his first name? I don't. He is not my mate. PS I have no idea what this thread is about.
  20. Oh we are talking about the cabbies. They've opposed everything on roads and the environment. And measures to open up their sector which is considered sacrosanct. I remember the opposition to closing the road in front of the National Gallery. They are hardly a barometer of a progressive modern country. Hadn't realised that politics had lurched this way in SE22, thought this was more an outer borough sort of thing. Perhaps another good reason to move to Bexley or West Wickham for those of you so angry about LTNs - you will have plenty of good company, but don't mention foreigners or immigrants (or Uber).
  21. Where's Willy?
  22. Prey tell more Metallic - couldn't find anything on line https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/england/london And a plea to you and others to avoid your posts appearing reactionary or rabid. Clearly you are not happy with the Mayor but you may get further if you try to avoid coming over as angry. Not a facetious comment, but some genuine advice about how to get your point across and influence the debate.
  23. Wonder if such trees are derived from cuttings, like apple trees. Had the sense to clean out the mouldy nyger seed feeders this weekend. Summer 2019 the goldfinches were prolific but not so in the last year or so (blame lockdown and all the bally noise of garden equipment, seemed like some were using strimmers for hours). Wow, maybe it was the snow but getting double figures of gold finches again. They prefer the recently put up sunflower seed feeder, and have a go at the blue tits for using this. The squirrels have a go at the sunflower feeders too, but not sure if they are successful, and sadly seen green squawky things, anyone got an air riffle?!! Green woodpecker next door and great spotted on the feeder for the first time since the autumn. I poo poo'd those who talked about ground feeders on the feeders in the hedge but in recent days seen dunnock, robin and thrush doing this. No wagtails but get them in the car park at Savecenter in Sidnum.
  24. I think you are missing my point. If there were no other vehicles on the road then time taken for ambulances to get to and from hospital would be slashed. But there will always be vehicles on the road and at times there will always be congestion. There, sadly, will always be those that suffer because of this. If there was unlimited funding there would be more hospitals, more care staff, and faster response times. You could spend zillions on helicopters should a government of the day wish to do this. If we invest in preventing chronic disease, such as obesity and inactivity, then you reduce the need for health care, and ultimately acute health issues, earlier in life. Making driving a bit more inconvenient or expensive will encourage some to walk and cycle more. 'Social prescribing' is where you do not prescribe drugs but activities and other non-clinical interventions that can help improve health and well being. https://www.england.nhs.uk/personalisedcare/social-prescribing/ One intervention is active travel https://www.london.gov.uk/sites/default/files/social_prescribing_active_travel_toolkit.pdf There is a bigger picture here. I am sure LTNs can and will be designed to reduce impact on essential journeys and users.
  25. On the broader impacts - those opposing controls on drivers' freedoms often cite delays to blue light services due to congestion. You can look at this the other way round in that getting people out of their cars has significant health benefits and hence reduces pressures on the health system and the need for acute care. I'm not going to attempt a comparison between lives saved due to increased physical activity vs deaths due to ambulance delays and and pollution hot spots. Apart from that physical inactivity and obesity are a much bigger issue. According to the British Heart Foundation: More than 20million UK adults are classified as physically inactive increasing their risk of heart disease and costing the UK health service as much as ?1.2billion each year according to our new report. https://www.bhf.org.uk/what-we-do/news-from-the-bhf/news-archive/2017/april/new-report-assesses-impact-of-physical-inactivity-on-uk-heart-health-and-economy#:~:text=More%20than%205%20million%20deaths,one%20in%20six%20deaths%20overall.
