Not when I carry my bike as I then become a pedestrian. I've not seen anyone carrying their car through red lights.

Thanks all, I checked out all of the suggestions. Family from out of town who aren't adventurous and were put off by the Lebanese Bakery without even checking out the menu http://thelebanesebakery.com/homepage-london/#menu That's on the cheap and cheerful side Passed the Salisbury on SML which was always a fall back but whilst not full everyone was taking up twice the space no easy room - reasonably priced pub fare. So did the Zedel as it ticked lots of boxes but will try out some of the others when next in town. I worked near Traf Square ten years ago but of course everything changes.

Piccadilly so anywhere is fine, Covent Garden, Soho, etc

Care home fees when savings run out - any advice?
malumbu replied to Minitoots's topic in The Lounge
Have a relly who is paying for live in car (similar cost to a care home) and about to run out of dosh - still has the house so not sure what she can claim. Useful to find out thanks. -
Biggest danger of death and serious accident is in deed motorised vehicles (my apologies as a scientist with a good grasp of evidence and stats). Higher likelihood of collisions in an urban area is with pedestrians, walking out without looking often distracted by headphones/a mobile screen. I try and anticipate both but a driver on a mobile phone is usually obvious from positioning and the like. Walking around Covent Garden the other day 90% of people seemed to be looking at their phones (OK that was a pedestrianised area)

Went on a stroll past parliament on Tuesday - reasonably good natured with the amusing papier mache foat and BtoB battle bus. Quite a lot of mixing and similar numbers of Leave means Leave as well as the remainers. Think the yobs were actually on the square bless um. there were a couple of guys preaching old testament - if you believe in evolution then you think we must come from monkeys. It was surreal enough already. Anyway I digress. Can any one go to this please and report back - next Tuesday, what the Left wants from Brexit. It will probably be quite informative not just Leftxit. https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/the-left-response-to-brexit-tickets-54401138269?ref=eattnewsrecs&utm_source=strongmail&utm_medium=discovery&utm_campaign=newsletter&utm_content=EBrecommend&utm_term=eventcard&afu=133718881492&rank=1&aff=eattnewsrecs

Too many cars for sale on East Dulwich Road
malumbu replied to jenf's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
(a) contact Trading Standards and/or roads team (b) if/when that fails (former is short on resource and focuses on rogue dealers) speak to your councillor © if that fails then formal complaint or write to your MP (d) then the PM (e) then the European Commission (hurry) I've made polite enquiries on the grape vine (stage a) -
Does 51% count as the will of the people? Can we please use other terminology. Obviously May/Leadsome/Farage/RM and the like can't campaign on "a small majority of the British population" but the definitive use of "we" "the British Public" and the like made a momentous decision etc really winds me up.

My apologies if my posts are unclear. Essentially I don't understand this irrational hatred of cyclists. I cycle 80 to 100 miles a week. Most of the time without serious incident. I see well behaved cyclists, motorcyclists, car drivers, vans drivers, bus drivers, truck drivers. All sharing the space courteously. At times I share a joke with some. At times having a disagreement, but long ago learning how to avoid road rage being the vulnerable party. If I were to rank those who are most likely to cause me an issue, probably young males in hot hatches, but not exclusively. Not routinely bus drivers, white van drivers, or cabbies. Those on scooters doing the knowledge used to be annoying but not so much nowadays. Once every so often I shout at a fellow cyclist for not looking or inicating, or being on the phone and not showing any attention, or the worst of red light jumpers ie cycling 15mph with people crossing. I'm more likely to shout at someone with no lights, or luminosity at all if driving "please get some lights" The biggest danger by far to cyclists is pedestrians just walking out without looking. So onto more serious matters we are killing the planet. Selfish drivers who consider they can drive what they want, whenever they want, where they want and how they like are a major contribution. I'm happy to take a few naughty cyclists as collateral in order to get more of us out of our cars.

And here's another one (link to the Daily Mail) https://road.cc/content/news/213909-10-most-hysterical-anti-cycling-daily-mail-headlines The best title is Precious Moaning and Tetchy - Cyclists are the new women https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2420957/LIZ-JONES-Precious-moaning-tetchy--cyclists-new-women.html And here goes the quote As my taxi driver, taking me to the first London Fashion Week show on Friday morning, remarked (as several cyclists cursed him loudly with added hand gestures, for pulling over, which he did carefully): ?Cyclists are the new women. ?Never pay for stuff, always moaning, and get really upset if you pull out quickly.? In their defence I expect that journos don't believe the crape they have to write, and may well do it tongue in cheek, albeit that it is very offensive. Anyway thanks for this thread, it has taken me away from Brexit and filling in my tax return

But to return to the subject, someone has already done this for you https://road.cc/content/news/234564-six-our-favourite-anti-cycling-rants-and-complaints-2017 I wont paraphrase the stories and the clue is in the title

This morning I saw the great big yellow and orange fire ball come up over the horizon. Then later these droplets of water fell from the sky. Then it all went dark. Biblical or what? Did anyone else see anything amazing?

Just be pleased that you don't live in the Falkland Islands where it will cost 10 times or more for fresh fruit and veg.

There was a documentary two or three years ago narrated by an older cabbie about cycling on Channel 4. It was remarkably balanced seeing cycling, good and bad, from every angle. Part of this followed some younger cyclists who cycle like crazy for thrills. Sadly this was staged with some stunt cyclists rather than out in the real world. After seeing this one day I was gingerly rolling through a short one way piece of road using my feet to push when two or three cyclists came through at speed (again going the wrong way). I followed them at speed all the way up to the Elephant after which I ran out of puff. What a wonderful adrenaline/endorphin rush. Think of me as you wish but it was a great natural high (not to be repeated I hasten to add). There's far worse things in life that what these guys did. Sense of perspective please.

Thanks for letting me know, that is a shame.

Clock does room upstairs for free if you can guarantee a bar spend. OK for around 40. Nice location, food and beer underwhelming.
-
Do explain why please - not trolling but want to get your views on the subject.

Are you accusing me of cycling drunk, stealing from shops whilst in possession of a Class B drug Sue? How perceptive, you've got me worried. Asset, it can be a bit of fun, yes it's done its time but just to correct you "small minded anti cyclist vs broad minded but somewhat superior cyclists"

Right, now I am really grumpy. Thanks for the informative debate, I am generally still in denial. But Grayling really has got my goat. Vote yes to the deal or we will get a rise in right wing extremism. Get real, it's happened already. Work to get some unity. Challenge it. Don't give into it (which let's face it you, BJ, Farage and the like have fanned in the first place). It's like TfL giving into the demands of cabbies.... wait a minute have they And the Austrians allowing everyone's democratic right to smoke in bars to appease the right wing nationalists.... what has that happened too? And the Mexican wall... Anyway the Austrians and TfL is just a bit of Gallows humour. I don't find Grayling at all funny, hiding behind May like a good boy and then putting his head over the parapet on 'safe ground' so we know that he is not just about screwing up transport.

Anyway to return to the subject I happily cycled my young daughter a couple of times a week to the child mnder without either of us wearing a helmet. I took care, avoided the worst routes etc. Am I a monster? Virtually nobody wore helmets in those days which weren't that long ago. I'm on a cover of a LCC mag in the 90s at the first critical mass ride - 100s of cyclists, no helmets. So views change and you may see me in one now. And if I was cycling with a young daughter on a carrier I may do same. It amuses me seeing kiddies on scooters with helmets. But then that is the decision of the parents, and I am seeing this from a personal perspective. So on this point, and my lack of helmet wearing in my first 40 years of cycling - go to the Netherlands and you'll hardly see a helmet there. Here's a great article with some good pictures from that progressive country https://bicycledutch.wordpress.com/2015/05/19/cycling-with-babies-and-toddlers/ So why don't those of you who get so angry go over there and shout abuse at the Dutch?

There is a sign at work in our back entrance yard "caution cyclists" Not sure if this is a "be careful cyclists" (as service vehicles use the road, including classically the Royal Mail Driver on his mobile" Or "be careful of bikes, pedestrians" for those who share the yard with us. Or "watch out for monster raving cyclists with axes who will cut you up and eat you alive" I prefer the latter, equating cyclists with axe murderers and cannibals, I think I will get a t-shirt printed. Here's a start https://www.pinterest.com/pin/565905509406183467/

Replacement Double Glazed Windows - advice on type of window
malumbu replied to Sue's topic in The Lounge
Oak Joinery in Lee Green is S... Hot. They made me a casement frame and windows ten years ago which I have painted once. My soft wood ones, particularly the replacement ones, peel and rot on an annual basis. You can also ask them about slimlite double glazing - I'd get this fitted as some of my efforts have now got condensation in them. The windows will come with rebated seals - spot on. You can DIY but again my experience is mixed. I'd call them on 020 8297 2993 as not sure the link below is theirs or not! http://www.westlondonwindows.co.uk/ Slimlite http://www.slimliteglass.co.uk/ Reddiseals https://www.reddiseals.com/ -
