  1. Thought of this before I saw your name, all the rage I hear. Much better than simply painting your house - shark in your roof - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Headington_Shark
  2. Just admiring the return to the sort of threads that I'd expect from ED. But disappointed in the advice. Clearly you need a sarong, both because they are so versatile but also as a statement that you have traveled the world and are a pretty liberal type of guy. Swedes will love it.
  3. A friend's daughter is running a half marathon raising money for the Brain Tumour Charity in remembrance of Dr McColl. A private matter so not for discussion here but please PM me if you want the Just Giving link and you'd like to donate.
  4. So much has been wasted in the economy on Brexit so far I don't see things improving in the next few years. No excuse for wasting local funds but I expect that LAs will continue to be hit by central funding.

Aghh please don't go down the imperial route - "we fought two world wars for the right to use arbitrary units that don't use base 10 nonsense". Brave new world of the early 70s when the UK still believed it was at the cutting edge of technology (which to be fair there are numerous examples of where we were - but that is another subject). School kids like myself were drilled in metric, Kellogg had a campaign at that time on their cereal packets - something like 1 metre equals feet 3.3, it's bigger than a yard you see. Yet 45 years later market stalls in leave dominant areas still feel that they have a right to be metric martyrs... Canada get it. Ireland get it. We can get it. Or align to America where it will take another millennium. Have switched off BBC news and moved to Channel 4. Newsnight fine though.

Trivial amount compared to government and industry money spent for preparing for a no deal, and the further costs if we went for this. Or to put into further context a small percentage on what we will spend restoring the houses of Westminster. And lower than Ress Mogg's net worth. Although if someone had to stump up for it it should be Dave. Although unlike RM that would bankrupt our ex-PM, Can't find info on TM, but much much smaller riches.
  7. Really convenient but more affected by the weather. Have had one flight cancelled (fog, all airports affected in the SE), and poorly handled by Flybe. On longish delay - oh Flybe again. And one where I had to get shifted to Stansted. Others fine, and very short check in times.
  8. They get the market rates. If you want a rant pick on footballers. Or those who made money out of Brexit, recessions etc. Far better targets working for merchant banks, reinsurance, tax avoidance etc. If you aren't happy with your local politicians then get politically active. It's democracy, not perfect, but democracy. Chief Exec at Lewisham gets paid less as everything is much cheaper in Lewisham.
  9. ULEZ was announced by BJ about four years ago and there has been plenty about it since on social and normal media, information campaigns, consultation etc so surprised how people are waking up to it now. TfL's checker is date based and can get things wrong occasionally. Here's a guide to emissions standards. Yes I know shed loads about it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_emission_standards
  10. Tell them, see what they say and then report back on this forum. They are a business and charge what they consider a market rate - feedback from customers helps. Alternatively if you like it there just put up with the higher prices. On prices you will find Catford a lot cheaper. If you want to go upmarket and pay silly money then Babur in Honor Oak - very nice but shockingly expensive. I'm always a bit surprised that people complain about high prices - it's East Dulwich and your pubs charge a pretty penny too.
  11. Wow - mercenary Beansprout (perhaps text speak was a hint). I went to Greenwich/Charlton Thursday sorry. We picked up some stuff for friends too. Good karma, they will do similar, or get us a drink, or donate some money towards charity. I have done a few favours in the past like return lost mobile phones or keys, and stand there on the door step waiting for thanks or an offer of something that I may or may not turn down. And had nothing. And then chuckled to myself as a small meteorite hit the house and killed everyone. I did manage to get away from IKEA without too much collateral damage, they have designed the car park at Greenwich so you get lost and can never leave... Try posting on the 'wanted' by the way.
  12. Work has been hit by the 'you've been looking at porn scam'. I had a slightly different experience - I got sucked into looking at the Daily Mail comments about the Cabinet Secretary leak on his Brexit report. I'd got away with doing this before, having a genuine reason to look at an article and not looking at the gossipy sidebars with the provocative pictures. Honest. But this time clearly I have a virus as immediately I got an e-mail saying they knew that I had been looking at the Daily Mail and unless I paid the ransom they would shop me to my employer. Cost me a pretty penny or two. I hark back to the old days of paper copy and always paid heed to advice in Viz magazine - along the lines " Mail readers, I always place mine in my copy of Razzle to hide my embarrassment"
  13. Better pubs in Catford, although getting a little pretentious there so more in common than you think. And flowers, veg and no doubt many other groceries much cheaper. I could always do a run there and set up a stall in North Cross Road, so you don't have to venture out of your comfort zone. Send me your orders for the weekend.
  14. Shouldn't really do a double post this weekend but this also came to mind (just change the name to Theresa) (and also the Earth Dies Screaming by a group just up the road).

Lots of sensible talk on Friday night - polarised public - hard Brexit, vs soft/referendum, need for major parties to determine position on the next General election eg Free Trade Agreement vs Customs Union, Rory Stewart playing a blinder on Newsnight with honest sensible views, DUP putting the union rather than Tory party first, talk of the moderate side of the cabinet asserting itself. Yet what do we hear? 4th fippin vote on he deal. Please please can someone explain how she is still positioning herself. BJ, IDS and JRM now exposing themselves for what they are (sure many already knew this), only a small number of Labour rebels. So you are going to fail with your manifesto commitment and red lines, time to go back to the people. Perhaps if you'd listened to the 16m earlier then we may have got some sort of agreed position. For some light relief the stare off between Mark Francois is precious https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-politics-47497183/brexit-will-self-and-mark-francois-in-tv-stare-off

    Air quality

Sorry showing my age, second world war, not Britpop. I was a conscientious objector on the latter/
  17. Yes in deed the whole of East Dulwich is a rip off. Walk over to Peckham. I was in Catford today, that can give ED a run for its money and is much cheaper too.

    Air quality

Drivers and owners feel that have a divine right to drive what they want, how they want, where they want, when they want. If you want to sort out air quality break that cycle. Government chickened out after the 2000 fuel protests. Local planning is all over the shop. ULEZ will get rid of some of the dirty vehicles but at the same time recent policies have increased congestion. Not joined up at local, regional or national level. But back to us to take some responsibility rather than carp on about the war on motorists. And we are relatively speaking some of the better guys, have this conversation with somebody in the outer boroughs. The alternative is birth control and culling our population, and a move to an agrarian economy. Someone tried that once, but others on this site don't think my comparison was apt. And that would also have an impact on air quality due to cooking on open fires. Interesting fact is that air quality has generally got better since the war, with reduction and cleaning up of industry, and little burning of coal. Apart from roadside pollution.
  19. Gentle fun, not malicious - I leave that to others. You can get buffalo butter, not sure about alpaca though. I expect a hand churned product is very expensive, You'll probably get it in an agritourism type place in Italy, Croatia and the like. I miss the tart yogurt of my childhood - commercially produced but very different. Returning to Brockwell Park there is of course the country fair, https://www.lambeth.gov.uk/events/lambeth-country-show Good to get away from Brexit for a few moments.
  20. When we were young we'd walk past a building site. Hey mister, what are you doing? I'm building my own home. Great, can we have a look? Certainly. Each day after school. And then I passed with my mother one day and she thanked the home builder for entertaining young school children. And do you know what he showed us each day? His days building work. Obviously in this day and age he would have provided us with hard hats and a quick safety talk. Or not approached us in any case due to the risk of misreporting. Shame we have to be so suspicious. You never know it may be someone genuine - depending on your instincts (and your level of vulnerability) you could ask for more details and say that it wouldn't have been right to invite him round at this stage. Perhaps even talk to the local neighbourhood watch - if he is a genuine do-gooder some feedback from others on approach wouldn't do any harm. And if it is dodgy then SNT.
  21. I understand that Herne Hill Farmers Market now has organic buffalo butter, they keep the animials in a paddock in Brockwell park and you are allowed to hand milk them and churn your own product. Absolute delish. There are plans to introduce alpacas next.
  22. Funny world, I almost admired Arlene Foster today for sticking to her principles, and caught one Tory backbencher saying he was supporting a softer Brexit as his constituents voted to leave political union, not the common market.
  23. Indeed. Most upset. Saw them many times in the late 70s onwards, from their early days and in the Compton Arms in Lozells. And the school band supported them too.

I'm back. This is doing my head in. Emotions all over the place. From the 'how exciting, we are writing history' to the WTF and how did we get here. I've got to stop watching the BBC news and switch to Channel 4. Newsnight is fine. QT can just make me angry - although the one in Northern Ireland was much more rational/measured. I've got a job that is, well very much affected by Brexit. And colleagues are the same, every time there is a staff meeting and they turn to us and ask whether we have any questions, silence - (a) fatigue (b) bosses know no more than us. And then in the tea rooms off we go again, and we are all monitoring the situation out of the corner of our eyes. And at home passionate debates and arguments, even if we are all on the same side. Anyway, in a moment trying to rationalise all of this at work having an informed conversation with someone who appeared to be very balanced, and not emotive like me, the person says "Rees Mogg" bare-faced liar, Gove - ditto. I'll get a t-shirt printed. Now RM has taken all that a stage further. I've not spoken to the rabid in-laws in Tamworth about my emotions. So I may be accused of being boring, but perhaps many of us feel similar.
