Yes, I agree with this, it's been very odd indeed. Why did they fly so many kites and brief for so long before the budget? And why was she set on raising income tax, even tho the OBR had upgraded the forecast? And why the speech (which apparently caused gilts to fall), and then the retraction? And then why the business about mansplaining and misogyny in the Treasury? It's been totally baffling, esp when you consider that, in the end, the budget was quite unremarkable. But I do see that, if Reeves had revealed that the forecast wasn't so bad, but that she wanted to keep enough headroom anyway, it would have gone down like a bag of sick with the media. She was damned either way. All this briefing and flip-flopping has just slowed the markets and probably spurred people on to move savings and pensions, hold off on selling their house / buying etc.

I'm pretty sure I saw Meghan's in the Hamlet on Deliveroo the other day - has it become a dark kitchen?

Wasn't it the OBR who leaked that they'd told her the public finances weren't in such dire straits? It's all very weird, was she just afraid of being upfront with the public?

If you have what I and several people I know have / have had, it can make you feel quite blue. It’s common to feel depressed when you’re unwell. This thing takes a good couple of weeks at least before you feel back to normal, so go easy on yourself x

They might not be related. Could your itchy forehead just be from the cold and central heating?

For me, it's not about a twee, rose tinted, yearning for a lost England that never really existed. From an aesthete's point of view, I just prefer the architecture and craftsmanship of yonder years, as well as glass, ceramics, furniture and decoratives. So much now is bland, cookie-cutter and soul-less. It's very sad how, on this forum these days, you can't even comment on liking an old house, without it being somehow sneered upon.

But no one's arguing that pollution is bad and can cause asthma in children.

Yes, you're right. I was conflating Art Deco with 1920s and it does have more Arts and Crafts features. Either way, I think it's a pretty house.
-
I'm assuming it was built around the 1920, 30s, but I might be wrong. If it was, that would make it too recent for Arts and Crafts. (Tho I'm a big fan of Arts and Crafts too).

God forbid we should have a discussion that doesn't align with the forum doctrines. That Piermont Green house is a gem. A great example of art deco at its finest. I love that period of architecture and design.

Your post doesn't prove that Khan's adult onset asthma is caused by pollution. First you posted a link to the Lancet to say there's no clear link to adult onset asthma. And then a link to an article saying children can develop asthma from pollution - we all know that. Desperate times, Mal? This post smacks of 'I hate common sense'.

Yes it may well not be C-19, but whatever it is, it's like wildfire and everyone is describing the same symptoms. I pretty a saline nasal wash stopped me from getting a follow-on sinus infection. It's an unpleasant but strangely satisfying process

Def Covid. It follows a very strange trajectory and you never bloody know where you are with it. It took me three weeks to feel fully well again. I always know it by the very distinctive sore throat it gives you and horrendous upper respiratory tract symptoms. It never feels as intense as flu cos you don't get the rigor you'll get with bad flu, but it sure has its own set of crappy symptoms

The Telegraph and the other right wing media, do they hate Britain?

I agree with this, I'm afraid. It's funny that certain people are up in arms about Rockets posting 'misinformation' in the Traffic threads, but seem OK with it in broadcast, as long as it aligns with their views. You have to ask yourselves, what is it that you really want? If it's an echo chamber then just watch Fox News or CNN, however you lean. But then what's the point of it all? -

No, it's not completely analogous. But no one in their right minds doubts that he's a villain who incited the storming of the capital, it goes without saying. But I see what you mean about re-examining the events, of course. As I said, a less-than-one-second flash frame would have meant we'd never even be having this discussion. He's also a litigious tyrant who's suing a US Network, which has directly led to a loss of income for me and many colleagues. I hate the guy. That's why broadcasters can't give him any ammunition and must keep their noses clean. Yes, I'm all up for less aggy, I don't like it one bit. -

But THE STORY is about a BBC edit, and its impartiality issues, not about the storming of the capital. And it's not the first time deceitful editing has been a story - there was the whole Queen scandal too. I love the BBC and hate seeing the corporation frankly unable to remain impartial anymore. It breaks my heart, because we do have a higher standard in this country and that's what keeps us on the right side of history - not people like Trump. You have to leave your politics at the door if you want to be a good documentarian. -

But I have never, once mentioned the storming of the capital, or said Trump is in any way not morally reprehensible. You put all those words into my mouth. For me, this isn't about Trump - they could have made that edit about Gaddafi, or Hussein, or Johnson... it doesn't matter. What matters is that the producers' unconscious bias affected their editorial decision-making.. That is the only point I have ever made on this thread. It was you who decided that I'm a raving Trump supporter. Yes, David Peckham. Please, for the love of God, stop making flippant remarks all the time that frankly only ever serve to bring a tiny bit of light relief, humour and sunshine to this forum. How dare you. -
The economy, a sensible debate in advance of the budget
HeadNun replied to malumbu's topic in The Lounge
Don't be ridiculous, he's not a troll! But he is proving himself to be a bully, who's incapable of debating without resorting to angry outbursts, personal insults and name-calling. -

Firstly, the Panorama DID go through proper clearance - nothing is aired without legal and editorial policy review. The whole point about the edit is that it was designed to go under the radar, which is why no one realised at the time what was going on. Any honest producer would have put a flash frame or a fade in, to show that two pieces of sync were spliced together. That isn't an opinion, it's a code of conduct. So Trump does have a case, whether you like it or not. Secondly, the BBC isn't meant to be centrist - it's meant to be impartial, there's a difference. The fact that you don't seem to know the difference says it all, really. And finally, the reason this whole thing is such a tragedy is precisely because the BBC is an amazing global resource and soft power, which is held to a higher standard than any other broadcaster in the world. That's why what the producers did was morally reprehensible - because they are giving ammunition to the people who want to see it disbanded (not because Trump's feelings are hurt). If you want to protect the BBC, you make sure you are above reproach and don't make editorial judgements that will bring the walls crashing down around you and ruin thousands of colleagues' livelihoods. -

Nope. I don’t have this wrong. I’ve tried to put my point across respectfully, without resorting to personal, angry insults. All you see is confirmation bias. If you don’t realise that, then you’re part of the problem. -
