  1. I’ve heard rumours he’s considering stepping down as mayor, with a Labour MP in ill health, who’s an ally, considering standing down from his seat, so Burnham can run. I wonder if Mcsweeny will go next. Whether he goes or stays, his puppet is dead in the water. I’m a big Wes Streeting fan and think we could do a lot worse.
  2. @vladi Did you have any luck with this in the end? I need someone to certify a document for an Irish Passport rather quickly. It doesn't mention that I can get it done at the Post Office. Did you manage to find a local solicitor who did it for you? UPDATE: Found a firm in Catford. William Bailey said they won't do it, but recommended another firm... who also said no, strangely.
  3. Clearly, you should hold your next forum drinks here, @Sue
  4. CPR is right - I was shocked when I discovered how much of our CO2 emissions are down to cats and dogs, what with pet food manufacturing, them shitting everywhere, plastic poo bags etc they are not environmentally friendly at all. I don't know what we'd do without our dog - it would leave a massive hole in our lives and it's so valuable for children to grow up with pets - but at the same time, I feel bad about it every day. If a dog is trained well, you should never have to shout at it, unless it's done something monumentally bad. And it will only come back to you when you say 'come here', if it's trained to in the first place. So I'm afraid your dog-walker friend is wrong. The best thing to do is to sound excited when you call it, so it feels like a positive command, instead of a punishment.
  5. I’m a dog owner and I agree with you. I watched as a guy sat on a bench in Peckham Park the other day, headphones on, glued to his screen, while his dog took a massive shit on the lovely flowerbed by the entrance. I step in dog shit all the time and have to interact with idiots who talk to their dogs like this they’re toddlers and know nothing about canine behaviour, body language etc. They simply cannot read their own pets and have no authority over them. Then there’s the bin situation - FFS if it’s overflowing don’t add to the pile on a boiling hot day. It’s not fair on the poor people who have to walk past or the poor council people who have to empty the bins. It’s completely out of control
  6. OK Jazzer, now you're just taking the Epoisses.
  7. FFS Please stop the these awful cheese puns! Not one of them has made me Truckle
  8. I love this! Stupid question, but do they have sirens or some sort of warning sound? How do they actually catch up with people travelling at speed?
  9. Ah I had no idea - who stops them and how, is it police in cars? I haven't commuted into London for years, and never saw it when I did, so there must have been an increase, which is good. I'll look up the Idaho stop, I must have missed that post. Our posts crossed. It's a shame this has decreased - as you say, the more people they fine, the more they can fund the resources to stop people.
  10. My point is more about the practicalities of stopping a cyclist travelling at high speed during rush hour on a busy road. Unless you have enforcement on motorbikes or in cars, it's not really that workable. And I only wish I saw council officers chasing after people who let their dogs shit on the street.
  11. Erm - who stops them exactly?
  12. I agree - TFL could make a fortune. But it's back to the question of how you'd collect the fines if there is no way to track down the offending cyclists
  13. It's easy to be glib about it, but I've witnessed it twice in the last two days. The first time was at the pedestrian crossing at the bottom of Barry Road, leading to the park. A car to my right stopped, a bus to my left stopped, but a cyclist decided the rules didn't apply to him and came up at speed on the inside of the bus and nearly hit me. He was a few inches away. Didn't even make eye contact or apologise, had his headphones in etc.

  15. Ilona if, by rustic, you mean ricotta salata, I know the Cheese Block sells it, as I use it for my weekly treat of Pasta alla Norma.
  16. I saw man doing this the other day. He also had a rucksack he was putting his cuttings (or more just tearings-off) in. I assumed he had dementia.
  17. I'm glad it was easy to establish, with a simple glance, that the workmen's sex aligned with their internal sense of self as male, female or non binary. Thank God for AI. It's been such a grey area for millennia but now the issue's crystal clear.
  18. I received this email from Met Engage last week. Shame about the rogue apostrophe, but good to see an uptick in bobbies on the beat. This summer we have been working hard to tackle the crime we see tick up over the warmer months in the busiest areas of London. We want our communities to feel safe going into their town centres, and for them to know we are tackling crimes that matter most to you, like anti-social behaviour, pickpocketing, mobile phone theft and robbery. Thanks to our efforts so far in the town centre we have seen: Theft from person decrease by 26% Shoplifting decrease by 39.6% At the same time, we are keen to make sure that our busiest areas have the resources they need. Yesterday we announced that we are committing an extra £32m to keep our town centre’s safe. This will mean a new Town Centre team for Southwark, who will be dedicated to relentlessly targeting prolific offenders as well as being visible and approachable to protect the public and deter criminals.
  19. I agree. @Rockets may well be completely wrong about the increase of crime in LTNs, but to accuse him of inventing what the PSCO said to him, without any proof, is a tad unpleasant. He's already suffered another unfounded accusation on here. It could well be that the PSCO was completely wrong (maybe he's opposed to LTNs too 😆) or that he was just speculating, who knows. But I don't doubt that it was said.
  20. It's good to know it's fallen slightly. But it certainly feels like it's increased. I'm sure I see a lot more police cars on blues about and hear more about phone snatching and car theft etc. But maybe it's just because people report it a lot on here and so I'm paying more attention to it than I used to.
  21. Oh yes you're right! 😬
  22. I too am very sorry to hear this, taliax7. It must weigh heavily over you and your family.
  23. Well the numbers in the nearby Goose Green ward have risen sharply recently, Insuflo. https://www.met.police.uk/area/your-area/met/southwark/goose-green/about-us/top-reported-crimes-in-this-area I wouldn't call it hysteria - plenty of people on this forum have witnessed or been victims of crime. Whether it's to do with LTNs, I have no idea and don't really care either way. But there's no doubt criminals are operating in quiet, dark streets, as the report Rockets posted suggests, esp VAGW.
  24. I think it's great that police are being pro-active around here and knocking on doors.
