  1. Oh please, don't lump all the 'nice middle class families of ED' in with one person's opinion. Lame.

  2. Gotta love the internet. No matter what the subject, you can always be sure someone will have superior knowledge or experience of the subject to you.

*cuts finger on latest P&L report and stumbles teary-eyed to the office first aid kit*

Edited to note that H's post snuck in while I was drafting mine and I was 100% referring to KK's post, not H's.

  3. Note to self - quoting woodrot can get you into trouble.

I like the bollards, and the curvy streetlamps, and the new grocers, but then being a lucky b*stard these are the kind of services/improvements that I use/appreciate. Someone who depends on the govt for shelter, food, etc may feel differently.

I also like the disco lights at ED station.

  4. "You live here, you are local.

No one has dibs on an area because they've lived there longer than someone else."

I agree with you (hence the use of speech marks for 'locals'; a cop out I know).

But a quick scan of this forum proves that many don't, and resent the 'newbies' (more copping out).

And I have sympathy for them where all they see as the net result of govt spending is, to quote woodrot, nazi grocers. And penis-shaped bollards.

  5. Not a great argument either. Are you saying that potential punishment is not a deterrent? I suspect that a lot of crimes back in the day were committed out of necessity (stealing food, for example) and any prospective punishment was less important than the need to stay alive.
  6. No car for us (with a 2 year old). We walk to anywhere in Dulwich, Peckham, Herne Hill, use the bus or train for trips to the Southbank, West End, etc, hire a Zipcar for big shopping trips or day trips (and always pull into Sainsbury's on the way home to stock up on bulky items), and hire a car from a 'proper' car hire place for longer, UK holidays. Taxi's for everything else.

Works great and saves us money and hassle, but the acid test will be when (and where) our young one begins school, and/or when we have another.

    Good luck!

  7. I'd also like to know what the police said. I live nearby the roads mentioned and 4 blades stuck (it seems deliberately) in the pavement cannot be ignored.
  8. Hello. Was wondering at what age you all started your kids off on scooters i.e. the hold the handlebars, one foot on the deck, scoot with your other foot type? Our son has just turned 2 but is very active and has gotten bored with his tri-wheeled, sit-down scooter. Did you use a helmet initially? Any advice gratefully received. Thanks.
  9. Yep, and if you get a sky couch (air bed) you can take your car seat on the plane. Useful for take-offs, landings and hypnotising with the in-flight entertainment.

Agree with Pickle re. jet lag ? switch to NZ times asap, even if you have a stopover.

Speaking of stopovers, we took one on the way there and were glad we did. The thought of getting back on the plane at LA after the first leg?

And remember, you'll have loads of family to babysit when you get there!

  10. Thanks vm, appreciated. Will try your chilli powder tip.

red devil - have you tried reasoning with the cats? I had a long chat with a black and white number that frequents our back graden a few nights back (after a one or two ales). I really felt like he understood where I was coming from. I think he may have even nodded his agreement to my request to stop shitting in my borders (and by implication to shit in my neighbours garden). We didn't shake on it or anything, but I'm hopeful.

  11. I do occasionally pick up takeaway boxes, etc, but only while muttering about where I'd like to stick said takeaway box.

And I'll not stop eating takeaways on the street. See, I put the box in the bin after.

You can't legislate for the lowest common denominator.

  12. Definitely think there's a reluctance to challenge the views of wronged people. I think it's because lazy observers put anyone challenging a victim's view in the other side's camp e.g. you're challenging Keith Bennett's Mum's view therefore you're on the side of Brady. This is simplistic but I think a factor. Then of course there's the understandable desire not to offend or rake up bad memories.
  13. I'm sure the school has taken care of that.

And I doubt too many EDF'ers have kids at DC.
