  1. Do you think that is looking north towards the corner with Highshore rd? Quite a lot of high streets and town centres were trashed in the 60/70/80s. I am not sure what happened architects and town planners of that generation. They must have been taken somewhere and had all sense of taste and aesthetics and decency beaten out of them. Such a shame because so many historic buildings destroyed or defaced with ugly fronts without a second thought. Things are a bit better now but not much.
  2. > ETA: And yes Penguin you're absolutely right, > where children are harmed it is statistically far > more likely to be by somebody related to them or > who they already know. According to the NSPCC nearly all under 5 homicides are committed by parents and most (2/3) child homicides are in that age group. In the school age (5-14) group less than 25% homicides are committed by strangers. Looking at the 2010 stats there were 23 school age homicides. So if the NSPCC is correct that would be ~5-6 committed by strangers that year nationally. To put the risk in context there 45 school age children killed by road vehicles in 2010; 498 by disease; and 619 deaths in total. Statistics can be read many ways and should only be used as indicators but it does seem road safety for school children should be a greater concern than stranger danger.
  3. Isn't there an old saying "A swarm of bees in May is worth a bail of hay; in June a silver spoon but July it isn't worth a fly." or something. So you are lucky.
  4. Decotastic! What happened to that building?
  5. Yes, hardly gracious and dignified!
  6. That's the way TFL seem to see it. Just look at the struggle to get the 63 extended or the way they block zebra crossing. TFL aren't motivated by the public's interest IMO.
  7. Had a swarm of feral honey bees make what looks like a temporary nest in a tree in our garden. The site is too exposed for them to stay long I imagine.
  8. You would have to have one screen that played Treacle Jr, like, all the time. Obviously.
  9. Are the police doing anything? Can be that expensive to DNA test it?
  10. Are they doing it everyday? You could always move the bins and park there - see what happens.
  11. I think the point the OP was making was that the "Peckham South" Character Area contains streets which people consider East Dulwich so a thread about it should be allowed on the East Dulwich Forum rather than it should be renamed. Also the proposed South Peckham area splits the ?Bellenden Area? so it probably makes sense to shift the boarder to include the other streets in the ?Bellenden Area? as they are similar in character, have one residents association and therefore should considered in conjunction in terms of the council?s action plan policy.
  12. Should dogs be allowed at all in a wildlife garden?
  13. I think "busy with the olympics" was the last excuse.
  14. Are you sure it wasn't a Swift? They are more common in London or maybe a House Martin. They all arrive about now.
  15. I imagine some of the reason people post crime stories is to get some support and reassurance from other members of community. It is scary and alienating being the victim crime especially if violence is involved ? you can feel very alone. I think it is nice that people can do that here and feel there are people who live near by who are on their side. It not to scare people or provide a useful barometer of overall crime levels. Telling people not to on the main room because you can?t be bothered hearing about it or because it scares people doesn?t sound right to me.
  16. According to the CPS guidelines pre-emptive strikes can be legitimate if the person honestly and instinctively felt at the time it was what was necessary to defend themselves.
  17. To be fair it does stop at a station - just one that closed over 50 years ago. Nice work TFL.
  18. I suspect within a couple of months of it running it will be impossible to get on the Overground at Peckham in peak hours. It still makes sense to have better transport links to both stations.
  19. You are allowed to use "reasonable force" to defend yourself. If goes to court it is up the jury (members of the public) to decide what is reasonable or not. Using the car to run them down seems reasonable to me in this situation. How terrifying for you all ? glad he is ok.
  20. The problem junction in my view is the exit of Marmora, is it nightmare both as a driver and pedestrian because there is very poor visibility north down FHR plus difficult to judge south because of all the people hooning it down the hill. I agree with dbdoy it would great if the zebra returned Colyton Road/FHR. It wasn?t clear to me if that was one of the specified options.
  21. Why not have a round-about with zebra crossings like at the junction with LL? Works very well even at busy times.
  22. I think the idea of caging pedestrians to protect them from speeding car drivers has gone out of fashion town planning wise.
  23. I was trying to make the point that the immediate revenue generation isn?t the only criteria when making transport decisions ? environmental, economic, social, strategic planning and congestion considerations should be taken into account as well.
  24. > Each > aditional bus that is put on the route has fixed > additional (capital) costs and variable running > costs - so the additional fares needed to pay for > extensions to routes, assuming you deploy > additional resource - must cover both the variable > and the fixed costs. That is not the case for the maintenance of the roads you like to drive along - why should it be the only criteria for bus route extensions?
  25. > We have already > learned that TfL have carried out a review which > indicated that the cost / benefit equation doesn't > deliver a positive outcome. All they did was a make a crude estimate that the increased running costs wouldn't be covered by new fares. If the same criteria was applied to say roads - non would ever get built or even repaired. Is that the objective thing to do?
