I always say if you want to know what life would be like without the NHS get a dog. we plan to use Mrs Robson next time we have an issue - our dog suddenly developed a limp a couple of months ago and she gave us free fantastic advice over the phone - saved money/time/stress. Hope she doesnt retire soon!

Its a bus gate rather than a school gate and not on the school gate list on council website - even though the timings, morning & afternoon- clearly suggest its there to limit traffic during travel to/from schools. Im guessing it doesnt get suspended during hols.

Thanks for posting this - i've always avoided school streets throughout the year. I hadnt noticed any signs saying they arent 'active' during hols - maybe because i avoid them!

Just a warning that school gates in Southwark still apply in holidays, even bank holidays like Boxing Day if they fall on weekdays. Unlike in Lewisham where i saw this school gate sign temporarily blanked out tonight. (Apols for pic quality - taken by passenger while moving). Why can't Southwark also suspend them?

Not they've gone. Everything has been ripped out. No sign of anyone new yet.

Saw the aftermath of another phone theft on east dulwich grove by trio last night. Then half an hour later spotted them biking back to 'work'. Crazy the police can't do anything about this - they are clearly cruising the same streets.

That's interesting that the system can do that and at least give you some information - when my camper van was stolen around seven years ago nobody ever mentioned it being spotted on ANPR. It actually received a parking ticket in Beckenham but even though the theft had been reported the ticketing process didn't flag up that it was a stolen vehicle otherwise it could have been recovered. Good luck, I'll keep an eye out.

The car with five tickets doesn't have any more yet so maybe the wardens haven't been down this week or maybe they are showing a rare glimmer of sympathy for someone who presumably isn't aware of the new restrictions. Can someone explain in simple terms what the point of making Calton permit parking was? It's not really a street where commuters parked to go to the station, it's not a street where parents dropped off their children for school - and if they did I expect they'd still do that quickly and hope not to get caught. I've walked down there today and there are hardly any cars parked on the street - most of the residents have drives so the council surely won't make much from the sale of permits. The only people it seems to be hitting are people that work on those houses or nearby - in the village or the schools. Who will mostly just park on the next streets along which don't require permits.

I hope these are only warnings as this car now has five.

The record is now four... Also the sign at the Woodwarde Road junction with Calton is possibly even better hidden than the one at the Townley end. And there are no bays indicated by lines (except the disabled bays), which would usually be a hint to go and check the signs. (where my mother lived in Essex for example, you couldn't park on her road between 1pm & 2pm and there were yellow lines all the way down the street, so you'd always check the signs)

Yes, three is the record so far. What are the rules if your car is parked somewhere unrestricted and then a CPZ is brought in while you are away? Asking for my friend Giles who parked his Cortina in an Athens side street in 1986 and hasn't had time to collect it yet.

Actually if I was to put money on it I'd bet it's a fourth option: One hour for non permit holders within those hours (and unrestricted outside those hours). but it is utterly confusing. By the way, I think the signs might have been put high because when they were lower they were vandalised and this post is right by a bench for easy vandalism access.

Can someone clarify this sign please? Does it mean even with a permit you can only park for an hour or if you dont have a permit you can still park for up to an hour? I assume its the latter but then why does it say "permit holders parking only past this point"?

Just because you are only fined if you 'break the rules' doesnt mean they arent also 'revenue-generating traps' - see also thread about bus gate fines in school holidays. Of course you could follow the rules and avoid the fines but why are they fining drivers in the school hols when the hours the bus gates apply clearly imply that they are there to restrict term time traffic.

I received a fine going through the Townley Road gate at 4.20 on Boxing Day a couple of years ago. Like most people I simply lost track of what day it was over Christmas but that's apparently not an acceptable defence for Southwark Council! I did have a lengthy email chat with a councillor about lifting restrictions during school holidays but he said this couldn't be done as public/state schools had different term times. I replied by saying that no schools at all were open on bank holidays so why not at least lift restrictions on those days, but didn't receive a reply.
