Dulwich Estate - fit to run conservation?
redjam replied to DulvilleRes's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Can't really see anything to get outraged about with these plans - they look pretty good to me. -
Advice from parents of LGBTQ children/teens
redjam replied to Mother97's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Fully three-quarters of my teenage daughter's friendship group are 'going out' with other girls or identify as queer/bisexual/whatever. I'll probably be shot down in flames for saying it but I expect most of them will grow out of it in a year or so. Or not - fine either way of course! But it definitely seems to be a trend among that year group. I too have taken the 'that's nice dear' approach (completely agree with your post, Curmudgeon) and we'll see where it all ends up. It's great that it doesn't seem to be a big deal at school any more - among girls at least, might be different for boys, I suppose. I'm sure you're right that we live in a bubble in London, OP, but certainly things have changed to an astonishing degree since I was at school (where literally nobody dared to come out) so I do think the younger generation are way ahead of us on this. -
We had one appear on our front window sill the other day. Very surreal photos attached. Our cat was NOT impressed.

Ooh, that looks GOOOOOD...

I generally like trying new places but there are certain restaurants I go to regularly either because the kids like them (e.g. GBK), the food is great (the Palmerston RIP) or I like the atmosphere (Yama Momo or Meat Liquor). But I do think the Peckham restaurants are more interesting so tend to go there - maybe familiarity breeds contempt, I don't know. Bonne Bouffe was perfectly nice but the one time I went there was hardly anyone else there so sadly that put me off going again - I hate sitting in half-empty places. So sometimes I think restaurants get into downward spirals for no good reason, which is a shame.

Mini Golf in Peckham Rye Park ... are they kidding?

Hmm, I'm not sure you're really cut out for city life, First Mate, if you get annoyed by the sound of people literally breathing in a public space. -
Mini Golf in Peckham Rye Park ... are they kidding?
redjam replied to Lee Scoresby's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Blimey. Is it just me or is the tone of all these posts slightly ... hysterical? -
I often come across these long thin leads when I'm out running in Peckham Rye and they're a nightmare as you don't see them until you're nearly upon them. I wish people would realise that if they stand on one side of the path and their dog is far off on the other side it's like an invisible tripwire for anyone else coming along, especially if it's a small dog. Poor you, OP, hope your dog is OK.

I was there last weekend - really liked it, very cool atmosphere and I thought the drinks were really reasonably priced. There were two different semi-private parties/club nights going on in both rooms but it was very relaxed and people were wandering between the two as the evening progressed. Funky unisex loos. Not somewhere to go if you want smart or fancy, but for a quirky cool vibe it gets a 9.5/10 for me (half-mark deducted for damp smell, though I guess that goes with the railway arch territory!).

Cattery recommendation? Cats + building work worries
redjam replied to redjam's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Thanks for the follow-up, Siduhe, and for all the recommendations. We did try a couple but they were both booked up, so decided to go for our regular catsitter. Then - to cut a long story short - for various annoying reasons we ended up having to cancel our holiday at the last minute so we never did get to go away after all! After all that... Think our cat was happy with that outcome, even if we weren't. -
Sue, just tried to send you a PM but your mailbox is full!

Goose Green councillors - how can we help?
redjam replied to jamesmcash's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Given the overwhelming majority of ED residents are clearly against the CPZ, it seems obvious that - if we are forced to have it in the area around the station - the zone should: a) include only the smallest possible number of streets, i.e. none of the streets that voted against it should be rounded up into the zone, and b) be operational for the shortest amount of time, i.e. 2 hours. Otherwise all the surrounding streets will suffer from the negative effects of the zone, as will the local traders with the resulting knock-on effect. Honestly, my faith in politics is at an all-time low what with the debacle of Brexit and this on the local level. When you've got a 69% majority voting against a CPZ - 69%!! - despite a consultation that was so biased in its wording that it was actually insulting, and not even including the thousands of signatures that the shopkeepers collected, how can the council POSSIBLY interpret that as a mandate to impose a CPZ on such a large area - including several streets that voted against it - for the whole day? So James, yes please do fight to minimise the impacts of this zone on behalf of the majority of your voters if you can. Good luck. -
Foreign language advice for year 6 child
redjam replied to Bumpkin's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Duolingo is quite fun (and free). It encourages you to keep on a 'streak', so you do a short burst of learning each day. It's pretty basic but good for beginners and quite fun. -
Monkey Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > This whole system really is a waste of time and > money for everybody: students, parents and > teachers too when you take into account open days, > banding exams, and the huge amount of time > administering the whole system. > Totally agree, Monkey, it's a colossal time investment for both parents and schools. And when you think of all the endless banding tests the kids have to do, not to mention music scholarship tests etc... Could never understand why there couldn't be a simple system whereby there was one single test and the results got shared between secondary schools (like they do in Wandsworth, for example) - or even more radically, dispense with extra banding tests altogether and go on primary school expected SATs results. Every pupil is graded to within an inch of their life throughout primary school so the data must be available.

If you mean the old Londis it's going to be a Superdrug, apparently. And yes, that sweet shop moving into Jolie a Pied didn't appear to happen - no sign of it closing down last time I looked.

I asked one of the builders yesterday and he said it was going to be Superdrug.

Cattery recommendation? Cats + building work worries
redjam replied to redjam's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Thanks again all - and yes please do report back on Moggie Minders, Siduhe! I'm currently checking out cattery options in the hope of booking her in for the week we're away, though that's a very good thought re asking one's parents, Sazzle30. Hadn't considered that but that might be the best answer... -
Cattery recommendation? Cats + building work worries
redjam replied to redjam's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Blimey, Monkey, that sounds awful, your poor cat. I've never heard of a cattery with a communal situation, didn't know they existed. There's no way my cat could cope with that as she's very fearful of other cats (God knows what happened to her in the past). Thank you for all this advice, everyone - I will be following up on all recommendations. -
Cattery recommendation? Cats + building work worries

Really helpful, thank you. Maybe I just need to reframe my idea of catteries (like the idea of giving her a holiday!). -
Best flexible child care options for freelancers?
redjam replied to missdriss's topic in The Family Room Discussion
The honest answer is you may need to be more flexible with your work than your childcare, ie book a couple of days a week in a nursery or with a nanny then try to cram all your meetings and work in those days (and evenings, and weekends...). And accept you will be muddling along for a while trying to do a crazy juggling act. Lots of advantages to being freelance with a child - and it does get easier as your child gets older - but I never found the ?perfect? childcare solution personally. Good luck! -
Cattery recommendation? Cats + building work worries
redjam replied to redjam's topic in The Family Room Discussion
V good thought to ask vet's advice - thank you! I am dreading putting her in a cattery again as it reminds me of when we first saw her sitting in a little cage in the rescue centre :-( But I guess you're right, better for her to be safe and we'll know she can't bolt. -
We're just about to start some major building work and have planned to escape from it for a week's holiday in the middle of it. Which is all very well, but I'm now worrying about our cat, who I think might freak out or - worse - do a runner if she's left with a whole load of builders/chaos and a catsitter coming in just once a day to keep an eye on her (her usual arrangement when we're away). Has anyone had experience of this? Should we put her in a cattery and does anyone know any lovely local catteries that they can recommend? And any general advice on dealing with cats and building work? She normally has a catflap and freedom to come and go out into the back garden, but we were thinking of providing a litter tray inside during the course of the work so she can stay inside if the chaos out the back is too much for her. She is ex-Celia Hammond and quite nervous, though mainly scared of other cats as opposed to humans so I don't know if it'll be worse for her to be in a cattery as opposed to a building site. Any thoughts, cat people out there?

CPZ: Proposed Controlled Parking in East Dulwich
redjam replied to dulwichresident01's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I definitely don't want a CPZ anywhere and I will be saying so and giving my reasons. I think it'll be the death of Lordship Lane if people can't come in from elsewhere easily to visit it. Our transport links are just not that good and the free parking is one of the draws of the area. There's a reason why our high street is a nice little thriving oasis at the moment but business could so easily dry up if people can't get to it easily. I also object to the 'uglification' of the area with all the extra white lines, signs and parking meters, not to mention the extra expense and hassle of having to buy a permit and organise one every time a plumber or a friend comes to visit. People should be very careful what they wish for. I speak as someone who lives just off North Cross Road and frequently has a hard time trying to find a parking place on my street. But I think it's a price worth paying to live near a thriving high street and long may it stay that way. For what it's worth I also thoroughly object to the one-sided arguments and frankly unbelievable 'facts' included in that consultation. I'd have felt much less cross about the whole thing if Southwark had openly and evenhandedly presented both sets of arguments in their literature so we could make up our own minds fairly, but it seems very clear the council are pushing hard for a CPZ whether we like it or not. Please resist, people! -
I normally use Dulwich Library up at the top of the hill but I'm curious to check out the new one. Anyone know if I can use them interchangeably? i.e. take back my read books to a different branch from the one I got them from?
