  1. Does anyone know why double yellow lines have been painted on both sides of part of Hindmans Road? We woke up this morning to find them, having had just a day's notice to move our cars. Why is there no information given to residents beforehand? Or consultation?
  2. Re The post from James Barber about the small post office near the library. There is often a queue and usually only one window open and they do close at lunchtime. They will only take three parcels at one time. However the people behind the counter are always helpful.
  3. Apparently the Post Office want to close this branch and place a counter in another shop similar to the arrangement in Forest Hill. I have noticed that often the queues are shorter than they used to be but it can still get busy. We have always had good service at this branch. It would be interesting to hear of people's experiences with the Forest Hill service.
  4. Just found a Small Magpie Moth on our curtains - it is now sitting in our window box and yesterday found a butterfly similar to a Gatekeeper also on the curtains.
  5. Some years ago a friend of ours moved to a house off Askew Rd in Acton. The young man living next door played music very loudly all day. Even his mum couldn't get him to turn it down, so after only a day of this noise my friend decided either the music stopped or he had to move his family out. He, with the agreement of the music player, bought a very good studio quality set of headphones. Expensive but effective - no more 'boom de boom yeah yeah' all day long. Might be worth it in this case?
  6. We have friends who live in France and in their local Leclec supermarket there is a sign above the disabled parking bays which translates as 'Take my space - take my disability'. This seems to work.

    Shale gas

Worth looking at a film called Gasland by Josh Fox. It's about fracking in the States.
  8. We've retuned but it hasn't helped. Looking online, problems with 4G describe exactly the faults we're having and as they've started since the launch there does seem a connection. I'll try to contact 4G.
  9. We have Freeview which gave a perfect picture until recently when the interference makes it imposible to watch a programme through. As it's only just happened I assume it's the effect of 4G. Is anyone else having problems and how can I get this sorted out without paying a fortune when I don't have, and don't want a 4G mobile phone?
  10. If you have T hinges on shed doors, which is quite usual, then the heads are exposed. I have just popped out and changed the screws on my shed to security screws. Unless the culprits go equipped with a selection of heads this should slow them up. You could also use clutch headed screws which only screw in and are virtually impossible to unscrew. Although as a chippie I know a way of getting them out but I am not telling.
  11. OK . Over Barry Rd area we have swifts. You have House Martins.
  12. Dawn 22. If you go on to the RSPB site and chose bird identifier and listen to the House Martin & then the Swift, you'll see why I think they are Swifts. Cheers
  13. Think you'll find they are swifts. Getting rarer over here now because of lack of places to build nests - eves etc. Sure sign that summer is here. Fascinating birds - they never land except to rear the young and they migrate down to Africa and apparently always come back to the nest area they were born in. We had a short holiday in Majorca two weeks ago -lots of swifts there and sparrows. Would recommend Soller in N.W. Majorca with it's old wooden trains and trams. Lot of walkers and cyclists and no clubbers!
  14. My car was also entered last night or sometime this morning. I can't swear to locking it last night but I'm usually very good about locking up. No sign of forced entry though. Rifled through door pocket and under seat. Emptied a box of tissues and I think took a rather old high vis jacket. It's an elderly vehicle and contains nothing of any value. Also they didn't close the doors properly and this means the courtesey lights back and front were on and now I have a drained battery. Thanks. Second time I've been broken into - last time they got about ?3 in change.
  15. The house on the corner of Tyrrell & Hindmans is being repointed and the old mortar has been taken out with an angle grinder. Effective but would have a proper brickie crying at the rough workmanship. Interested to see what the repointing looks like when it's finished. But that's where the dust is coming from.
  16. Probably not connected but my car was broken into last Sat. in Hindmans Road. Spotted by a neighbour on Sunday morning. Quaterlight broken and about ?3 taken from ashtray/coin tray plus a cheap torch. There seems to a spate of trouble in this area suddenly. Could it be we have new neighbours? New quaterlight cost me ?65 but the leaks under the dashboard when it rains seem to have stopped, so not all bad.
  17. Does anybody know whether these are going on at the moment? They start at 6.30 am. But as it's still dark at that time, I don't fancy getting up and hanging around Barry Road if no one's there.
  18. I think anybody finding the noise bad should pop over to Barnes or Fulham or better still Hounslow for a few hours and when they came back they would find that the noise was really nothing to get worked up about. I lived in Slough in the 60s and that is to the west of Heathrow and right under the flight path of aircraft taking off and climbing very steeply to gain the height demanded. Coming over us the planes are virtually coasting but on that side of town the engines are at full thrust - now that is noisy. Aircraft engines now are much quieter than in those days. I remember the Caravelles were incredibly loud - I once threw myself out of bed and onto the floor convinced that one was coming straight for my bedroom window. Give me aircraft noise any day rather than the thump thump of brainless music in cafes, bars and even banks. But that should be another story
  19. Please, please No. The reason so many people like East Dulwich is its individuality - more chains will make it indistinguishable from every other high street in the country. We already have Cafe Nero and Foxtons blazing away, endless estate agents, a multitude of food shops competing for trade. I'm not a business owner but I agree with legalbeagle - we don't need any more supermarkets and anyway Waitrose and M&S are too expensive.
  20. We live a few doors away and have no complaints. One of the residents of the house came round yesterday evening to tell us there would be a lot of people and that it would be the final night. Sure - there were a lot of cars double parked but still plenty of room to drive by. It was a very peaceful occasion and not at all 'creepy'. I hope we can live together accepting other people's traditions.
  21. Please no - for all the reasons others have given. Lordship Lane will end up like every other high street in the country instead of having the unique interest that makes people want to live here. And .......... not everyone in East Dulwich is 'aspirational' nor able to afford M & S or Waitrose.
