  1. When we went last summer, we booked a place via AirBnb in Alftanes (where the president lives). We opted not to have a car, so just took the bus into Reykjavik. All the bus drivers speak English, so it's quite easy to get around. If you'd like to venture further afield, you could try using these guys: http://www.gtice.is Here was our list of recommendations from our Icelandic friends and our Airbnb hosts... Places to see: 1. Perlan (also serves high-end dinner) 2. Laugavegur (shopping street) 3. Skolavordustigur (another shopping street) 4. Top of Skolavordustigur is the biggest church in Iceland (great views of city & bits of water) 5. Grandi (by the harbour) Places to eat: 1. Glo (on Laugavegur, for organic lunch) 2. Svarta Kaffi (also on Laugavegur for soups and coffee) 3. Matur og drykkur for lunch by Grandi (at Grandagardur 12) 4. Iceland Valdis for ice cream (at Grandagardur 2) 5. Baejarins Bestu for Icelandic hot dogs (Tryggvagata 1) In our research, we also thought about staying here: http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Review-g7313926-d1983409-Reviews-Privileged_B_B-Alftanes_Reykjavik_Capital_Region.html but opted not to as we were traveling with a 3 year old and didn't want to disturb the other guests. Have a great time!
  2. Why not try The Shala? Very easy to get to from West Dulwich & Herne Hill. Fabulous teachers and a serene studio space.
  3. You mean the New Covent Garden flower market? It opens at 4am, but I think the earliest I've gone is 7/8am as I didn't want to get in the way of trade (assuming I would??). Anyway, had an enjoyable and leisurely experience when I went later in the morning. Maybe not ALL the stalls were open, but loads to see and choose from still. Hope that helps!
  4. When Shingo wasn't available, we made an appointment with Pauline for our then 2 year old son. She has kids of her own and was really patient with our boy. She made him feel comfortable and chatted with him. With Shingo, our son consistently falls asleep at the chair when he gets his hair cut. I have an appointment with Shingo next week, so don't think the rumour that he's moved on is true?
  5. We recently had to pick a dentist for our son too. And went to see Philip Norton in Denmark Hill/Red Post Hill. His bedside manners are impeccable and really put our son at ease. Our son fell asleep while being examined and he doesn't even fall asleep in his own bed. The clinic feels more like a living room with a dentist's chair rather than a clinic. So all in all a very good first experience for a toddler. But for our son's less-than-straightforward set of teeth, we opted for Half Moon Lane as they have a pediatrics specialist and orthodontist on their team. I figured it would be easier to go there to get second/third opinions when we need it. The clinic is painted in very vibrant colors so very kid-friendly. Also heard good things about the dental clinic in West Dulwich. Hope that helps!
  6. With kids in tow, I would avoid Vegas. They won't be old enough to enjoy the arcades anyway. SF weather is variable, so no guarantees that it'll be sunny and warm. But lots of interesting things to see/do and good food to be had! What about San Diego? There's a direct flight operated by BA from LHR to SAN. It's pretty kid friendly. The zoo is fabulous. Lots of beautiful sandy beaches between Carlsbad and La Jolla. And Coronado too.
  7. Hello forum, Is anyone's child going to be starting kindergarten at Herne Hill School this coming September? We'll be transitioning our son out of our nannyshare into kindergarten in a few months, so thought I would help the transition by introducing him to new friends over the summer. We live near Sydenham Hill station and the woods this time of year is lovely, but happy to meet at Dulwich Park, Horniman Museum or Brockwell Park too. Get in touch if you have a little one who'd like a new playmate before school starts.
  8. Had a lovely evening at Dulwich Wood House yesterday. The place is beautifully done up. My only gripe is that they didn't allow food in the garden (which our son couldn't understand as we always ate outside before). But management said this might change after they've worked out all the opening bugs. Menu looked promising and food was decent enough considering it was opening night. Here's to hoping they work everything out soon, as we've missed having a pub near us.
  9. When our son was that age, we'd just put him in a sling and hop onto the Bromptons. Then both our Bromptons were stolen and after grieving for a year, we finally bought new ones. By then our boy was 2 and we put him in the IT chair. You're welcome to come try out ours for size if you'd like.
  10. My husband applied for it last year, and didn't hear a peep from them. Applied again this year and was awarded a voucher. Haven't claimed it yet, but seems pretty straightforward. PM if you have specific questions.
  11. They have yoga for kids at The Shala in West Norwood. It's Thursday after 4pm, I think. The adult classes are quite good if you like ashtanga style.
  12. My friend's husband who's of retired age goes to The Shala in West Norwood. It's a Friday evenjnf course I think.
  13. What about slip-on/off or zip-on/off Doc Marten boots? The patent leather ones are easy to maintain.
  14. You could also try Vicky Forrester at Flux Studios on Peckham Road: http://www.vicky-forrester.com She's a fantastic jeweller and runs jewellery courses year-round (sometimes at a discount for Southwark residents, even): http://fluxjewelleryschool.com/events/category/all-jewellery-courses/
  15. There are rooms available to rent at Chumleigh Gardens inside Burgess Park. They're run by the First Place nursery folks next door and sometimes the nursery area is available for rent too. Good luck.
  16. We rather like the Dulwich Woodhouse as a family friendly pub. Great outdoor area and they have a collection of toys and games for the little ones to play with. Food is nothing to write home about, so we go for the space and ample parking.
  17. Thank you for the replies! They're just what I was looking for.
  18. Hello wise forum members, Our son is about to be paid for his modelling job and I should probably go open a bank account for him. So are there any recommended local banks that cater to kids? Also, what kind of account should I open? A regular savings account? A junior ISA? A stock market index fund? Thanks in advance!
  19. There are meditation sessions at Zen Yoga in Camberwell. www.zenyoga.org.uk
  20. You could try Agnieszka on Bellenden Rd. http://www.agnieszkamiles.co.uk/pages/contact.html I had A3 posters printed, mounted and framed by her recently and we're very happy with the results. I'm sure she can do floating frames.
  21. The best ones I've found are made by Ziplock and the quart size ones. I buy them bulk from Costco. How many do you need, I can give you some.
  22. Our homeopath suggested calendula cream when there's a flare-up...we used Weleda calendula nappy cream. And normally, we wash with Dr. Bronner's and moisturise with shea butter, seems to be doing the trick at the moment.
