Bakerloo line extension to Camberwell?
StraferJack replied to Ron70's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
" I do use buses, but not for time critical journeys where I have a set deadline or appointment. They're not reliable enough. " not once in 12 years have I been late for a meeting (many of which start anytime between 7am and 10am) The number of colleagues who tube/train it who are late sometimes is...... a lot if you use buses regularly you pretty much know to within 5 mins of when you'll get there When things go wrong (traffic snarl ups etc) , you know how to get off, walk to another route and continue - but that is rare that said I bussed in in the mornings and sometimes trained back in evenings - just because roads/people get more gnarly in the evenings -
Oh my tongue was in my cheek - and I'm trying to ration smileys. it's not beyond possibility but I wouldn't rate chances too highly

"Arsenal will one day have a similar problem when Wenger leaves, I hope you're taking notes " oh gawd is this ever true. It's why I have been so anti all the anti-Wenger sentiment amongst (not a small) contingent of Arsenal fans that said, I expect we will get Pep to replace him, so I'm not tooooo worried

good points RD - it was when I saw Coral announcing they had suspended betting I thought something might actually be happening I hope he stays and I hope Man Utd have a great 10-12 games ahead of them - I need you to take points of others

Bakerloo line extension to Camberwell?
StraferJack replied to Ron70's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
well from SE22 to SE5 it really is a good question - why don't more people just walk? i suspect it's as much down to not realising how close it is as anything else - but if more did it would alleviate crowding on all transport But anyway - buses in rush hour.. most definitely not a different demographic. Later on in the morning perhaps, but if you are on a bus around 7-8 ish it's pretty much same demographic as the trains from ED. Maybe a slightly wider mix but nothing like the disparity suggested -

?different demo(graphic)? How so? As for the ?not everyone has an hour to spare? ? it?s an easy line to trot out but it doesn?t bear much scrutiny Depending on where you work in London, it can easily take an hour via train ? schlep to ED or PR station, wait for a train, hope it?s not cancelled or shrunk to 4 carriages, get to London Bridge, change for tube, wait for tube, schlep up from final stop I tried various combinations over the years and yes sometimes, on a good day with wind behind me, I had a journey of 35-40 minutes but usually about an hour ? and that was with all of the above hassle. On a bus, it takes less than an hour, you get to read/think/work and less frazzled at other end Failing that get up earlier. Do you ?have? an hour to do gym? Then bank the time and money and walk instead As for the extension itself, I think there is valid case for having a station near Camberwell Green ? easing the choke on Walworth Rd. But a tube/overground in ED? Can?t see it being a good thing -
why are some people being called "arrogant"? Why doesn't someone volunteer to hold a BBQ in their flight-path back yard, invite the "arrogant" ones and show them just how bad it is Either the "arrogant" crew will say "huh, now that IS worse than my gaff, I understand your position a bit more " or they will say "yup, about the same where I live but I hadn't noticed it until you drew my attention to it" but it'll be progress. And people will get to socialise

I might have been snippy with someone who posted exact same question twice instead of revisiting their existing thread - but by what definition of troll are you defining me as? genuinely curious

When quids is in trolling mode, the problem is he can say whatever he likes. ( however disgraceful and wrong) but if you engage it's "another one bites" and if you don't respond people can take him at his word And he couldn't mean it really Could he??

So not an apology then Volga? I was informative. I pointed you in direction of a recent thread about same subject. No further info available

"And besides - for all your denials you might be Willie Walsh for all I know. Or Richard Branson posting from your laptop in Necker Island. I have no idea and never will. And as I say the anonymity offered by a forum such as this by its very nature theoretically allows anyone to keep vested interests hidden." leaving aside the fact that you are insuating I'm a liar, I need to point out that I am far from anonymous - anyone who has ever taken issue with me has been able to arrange to meet me where we can argue over a pint. No keyboard warrior me

remember last month when you asked same question? The same answers again

?It would be fascinating to know whether those descriptions are accurate in this case, but sadly we'll never know? Well that?s not true because I am happy to answer all of the above ?The only people I can think of who would go to the effort to do so would be a)the incredibly bored b)estate agents and/or house owners fearful of the effect "East Dulwich/Peckham blighted by flightpath" headlines might have on houseprices c)shareholders/employees of BAA/British Airways/Virgin etc. ? No to each of those I?ve already posted about how a major world city needs to accommodate the various aggravations to rub along ? flight noise is one of these things. It?s misrepresentation to say most of the people named ?are not affected? by it ? it seems obvious that people manage the noise The 176 IS overcrowded ? so walking is an option for many/some (NOT all) But someone starting a petition to alleviate that problem would be asking for more buses, no? Which is more traffic ? which is more congestion This is all quite different to starting a petition to STOP expansion and then hectoring people to sign it It?s the lack of awareness and context as well as the tone and attitude which I am responding to

Are you posting under multiple names on same thread? anyway "OMG. It's pathalogical. I'll say it slowly. Listen carefully if you can. 1. It's hurting people. Fact. 2. A minimum standard protects everyone, even you and yours should it get worse in the future. Fact. Really, what is wrong with you? Your neighbours are disturbed by this and you don't give a ....? And what's more, you're only too proud to say so. Empathy, what's that? What's wrong with you?" Firstly people who make dubious statements followed by ?fact? ? annoying It is NOT a fact that it is ?hurting? people. Some people seem to be oversensitive to the noise in a manner that suggests its more about them than the noise. Given how many people the noise is NOT affecting, the noise doesn?t seem to be the root of the problem. Stating it as fact that it is hurting you is just not true I care a great deal about my neighbours - one way or another ? but when those neighbours are wrong about something I try and tell them why. In all my years in Dulwich, speaking to neighbours, air traffic has rarely come up in conversation. And when it does NONE of them have minded (this is in various different SE22 postcodes btw)

"It protects everyone from babies to sensitive adults. " you aren't under attack! babies sleep fine through the night in ED - mine did more likely to be woken up by weird parents prowling the hallway with a radar in one hand and a microphone in the other

Dulwich Park - Dogs Must be Kept on Short Lead
StraferJack replied to Sue0103's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
that was exacly my point dogs don't react well to screaming so telling someone not to scream puts the onus on the person rather than the more obvious "hmmm dogs aren't always as under our control as we think" -

StraferJack replied to Sue0103's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
a lot of very good points about phobias undermined sliiightly by this " by the way, screaming is probably not a good tactic where dogs are concerned, " if it was just a phobia, why would I be worried if I screamed (rhetorical question) The chances of being attacked are of course miniscule - but not impossible and not inconsequential if it comes to pass. Telling people how to behave around dogs in a public space is wrong priority IMO (I'm against dog muzzling btw, I'm not anti them in any real sense. But they aren't quite the no-danger-huggables portrayed by some)
