  1. yes, from what I can gather. On the Frome website - it describes itself as a "library of things" https://share.myturn.com/library/inventory/browse
  2. This is a rather brilliant idea: http://www.fromestandard.co.uk/sharing-shop-country-opens-acclaim-town-mayor/story-26449427-detail/story.html#WPSAVStYLVTaWzKR.01 A "shop" which shares items that aren't needed long term ... imagine: toys, drills, sewing machines, car roof boxes, child car seats, long ladders, gardening equipment, large jam pan etc etc etc ... All the kind of things that get informally shared on EDF. Would be great to have one of these in ED ...
  3. The other thing to remember is that children develop at different rates. My eldest learned very quickly but hasn't sustained a "love" of reading, my youngest struggled and fought (literally fought against having to read the books sent home from school) until one summer (at the end of year 2) it all fell into place and he's a voracious reader now. The main important thing, I think, is to try and keep it pleasurable. Often the books they "can" read are extremely dull (storywise) and any child with a more sophisticated sense of story and language (despite not being able to "read") might enjoy being read to by adults and listening to audio books. Developing an understanding of how stories work and language is used is just as important I think.

  5. For the life drawing classes, what about the Francis Peek centre in the park? Or the upstairs room at the library? (both council run). Bellenden Scout hut is fine and dandy but cold in the winter ... which might make for some unhappy life models ...
  6. Well the website info isn't very inspiring - cites the sports club as an example and the expensive Saturday classes as examples of excellent community use ... http://www.jags.org.uk/community/community-music-centre/
  7. flanter - re levers - not at all - just a bit of google foo and then a bit of tweeting
  8. RCH - that's really good to hear about your efforts - thank you so much for replying and for all of your efforts in this area. I do hope that the new JAGS music centre is "for the community" but on the website it seems to imply that "community" is the (very expensive) classes that are held there on Saturdays and the (very expensive) orchestra courses that are run there. There's almost nothing for young people to do round here ... and its grim for them.
  9. Well, Sola Akingbola (Jamiroquai).@solasco wonders why they can't share in the "interests of social cohesion"
  10. This is the organisation that runs the youth club http://www.redthread.org.uk/
  11. These are the patrons listed on Jags website who are charged with helping to raise the money needed for this "community" enterprise - I wonder if they have any suggestions - we could ask them on twitter ... Patrons: Angela Gheorghiu (opera singer), (twitter @angelagheorghiu) Camila Batmanghelidjh (KidsCompany), (Kids Compnay twitter @KidsCompanyUK ) Charlotte Ritchie (All Angels), (twitter @Charitchie) Jenny ?clair (comedian & broadcaster),@jennyeclair Jeremy James Taylor (National Youth Music Theatre),@NYMTuk Lady Annabelle Weidenfeld, Lord Lester of Herne Hill, http://www.parliament.uk/biographies/lords/lord-lester-of-herne-hill/2037 Lord McColl of Dulwich,[email protected]://www.parliament.uk/biographies/lords/lord-mccoll-of-dulwich/1892 Richard Stilgoe (Youth Music & Music Therapy) @RichardStilgoe Sally Hawkins (actress), Sir David Willcocks, Sola Akingbola (Jamiroquai).@solasco The main CMC Committee is chaired by Sarah Tunstall @Tunsty an alumna and governor of JAGS. Many other supporters are working with us.
  12. Oh dear - that's the youth club gone then ...
  13. Carmen Disruption at the Almeida is wonderful.

This. This. There are all kinds of things that people do which we might think are "wrong" and / or "risky" for themselves or their families, or which we just don't like but are none of our business and we can't / shouldn't expect to do anything about. Personally, I'm very concerned about the high rates of eating disorders and mental health disorders at high pressure private schools and feel very worried for the mental health and moral well being of these children should I be handing out leaflets at the school gates telling demanding parents that they should be doing things differently? Of course not
  15. threatened and cheated? heck, that sounds awful. I;ve been using them for a few years now and find them great - I have a regular order and change it sometimes or cancel it for a week when we're backed up. I've always found them to be very helpful if there have been any problems.
  16. I'd say it depends on what you mean by "good" and on your child. For some it's great, for others it isn't.
  17. I understand the frustration felt by people about this but it is hard to see how 113 people (who objected, locally, at the consultation stage) can hope to "unseat" Labour in the forthcoming election. Am I misreading this? Beyond the tiny few who post here (and who obviously feel very angry and frustrated), the 113 who objected at the final consultation stage, is there really a massive local objection and rejection of the workings of local politics? It might be very annoying not to have got your way but I'm not sure why you feel that you automatically ought to. Unless, as I say, I am missing something, this seems like a noisy campaign but not one that commands universal support.
  18. Apparently, so they told me today, they have had some "locums" in recently but haven't recruited anymore staff. They also suggested that I "read the news" to see that the problems with getting appointments aren't really a problem specific to them rather a problem happening "everywhere".
  19. Then there's this: http://www.hamhigh.co.uk/news/education/gordon_brown_psychologist_tanya_byron_warns_fear_of_failure_behind_rise_in_pupil_anxiety_1_2815427 http://www.standard.co.uk/lifestyle/london-life/overstressed-underweight-and-selfharming-the-dark-side-of-londons-public-schools-9165530.html
  20. or train to Farringdon from Denmark Hill / Peckham Rye or Herne Hill then easy platform change onto Metropolitan / circle / H&C.
  21. It is on the tab relating to sept 2015 and beyond
  22. If I'm reading this document right, Charter got the approval from the Dept of Ed.... https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/410074/List_of_open_free_schools_and_free_schools_opening_in_2015.xlsx I know that will be disappointing for many people beyond the proposed catchment but it is great news that a new, mixed, local school will be opening.
  23. Here's a response from the council from July last year to the question about enforcing 20mph for cyclists. http://www.southwark.gov.uk/news/article/1725/response_to_reports_concerning_20mph_limit_and_cyclists
  24. I've been really enjoying the more relaxed pace of 20 mph. What I've noticed as a plus is that because I'm approaching traffic lights and crossings more slowly I am often able to judge it so that I don't need to stop and certainly my stopping and starting is more gentle. Feels like an appropriate urban mode. Agree that it takes a bit of adjusting on those roads that seem to offer faster opportunities but I have noticed fewer people overtaking and driving aggressively than I did at first. Maybe people are getting more used to it.
