  1. ha ha ha ha (hollow) ha ha re bbc
  2. you could always just buy some snazaroo paints and do it yourself - honestly its really really easy and they love it and its fun
  3. With bitter bitter experience I would offer the following advice on lice: 1. Combing is the best way - wet combing (not too much conditioner) is best and you should section off the hair and approach it systematically (use a dvd or audiobook to occupy child) - after each comb wipe teh comb and log (!) any lice. 2. Nitty gritty is my favoured tool: it also removes the eggs! 3. Know your enemy and its life cycle ... headlice are easiest to remove when they are alive (ie easier to remove than the eggs although a seasoned eye will be able tos pot and remove the eggs especially when they are "ripe" They are longer than they are wide and glisten slightly and have a darker centre which is teh louse ready to hatch). Head lice are fully mature and ready to lay eggs 12 days after hatching before this they moult twice and chanmge size and shape. THIS IS GOOD NEWS! It means that you have a window of opportunity once they hatch and before they lay eggs. 4. Once you know there's an infestation - comb once, and again the next day and until you get no (or only one or two smaller lice) then comb every other day for at least 2 weeks until you get no evidence at all. (you might continue to get surges over this period as new eggs hatch BUT they won't be able to lay eggs for 12 days). 5.Keep an eye on your child's hair. Once you've had them and spent hours combing you'll become an expert in what they look like. (Try to resist rooting through the hair of every child you come across - though it helps to cast an eye from time to time at your child's friends heads as they're likely to share).
  4. you can also do it online - report flytipping, I mean. One of my favourote Tessa Jowell memories was her turning up to and taking part in an anti-flytipping protest on the corner of Bawdale Road (in the olden days yesteryear of, ooh, 2003 maybe)
  5. Dear Community Cohesion I'm sorry you've had zero replies - but I'm not absolutely what you're asking for. I think it would be excellent if young people in Southwark had the opportunity for satisfying, useful and properly paid employment matched with their existing skills and with prospects of making progress according to their potential. I am disgusted by the insinuation by government that young people (or indeed people of any age) are at fault when there are no suitable jobs for them. I am sickened by the idea that they should work for free for low-rent commercial exploiters. Frankly, I'm not exactly sure what I expect southwark Council to do about it. It could offer "work placements" but one of the main things about "work" is the "pay" and the sense that you are valued and paid properly for your efforts.
  6. I;d second Contact a Family http://www.cafamily.org.uk/advice-and-support/in-your-area/offices/southwark/ Southwark brancc is very active and there are lots of events, drop in sessions trips etc, people to talk to etc
  7. does anyone know of any sen after school providers and / or transport options to get my child to an after school club? trying to juggle an emergency childcare problem and very keen not have to give up work as am freelance and unlikely to keeop work if I do ...
  8. adventure playground is splendid isn't it - I did that same for son's borthday - very chilled, very helpful utterly lovely experience. The whole adventure playground things (DKH and Peckham) is one of the lovliest London things I think. Really wish there was one in Dulwich Park...
  9. I too love my mooncup and would never revert to other "methods" which now seem odd. Utterly reliable (so much better than tampons) and easy - once you get the hang of it. I did have a bit of trouble at forst couple of gos but now so easy. Brilliant on holiday. Can't recommend highly enough.;
  10. Today I had a flat tyre - friendly chap (just a resident) changed it at high speed and I was not ripped off when buying a replacement locally. Bought good value leg of lamb at local butchers... hurrah!
  11. http://www.allinlondon.co.uk/directory/1120/14675.php battersea ris e- but a quick google revealed loads http://www.efoam.co.uk/foamshapes.php?cp_n=adwords&cp_a=CutToSize2&cp_k=Buy%20foam&gclid=CLO2nLG88K0CFQcSfAod81TksQ
  12. post it as a google document with a link?
  13. Paris is splendid for kids. Lovely parks (you can hire sail boats to float across the ponds) trips on teh river and a carousel on every corner
  14. This marvellous woman did my marriage ceremony / child's naming ceremony http://humanist.org.uk/jeannerathbone/ She's splendid!
  15. I'd recommend combing every other day with a very good comb - nitty gritty is my fave as it also removes the eggs. Settle down with a dvd or an audio book, washed hair with conditioner in it -section up the haor and comb, wipe the comb clean with a tissue every time - celebrate loudly when you catch a scrobbler! Keep doing it every other day (or every 3 days) until you no longer remove any eggs or lice and then do it for two or three more sessions. Then - be vigilant. I tend to check whenever I'm in the vicinity of hair. I comb as soon as I see any signs of itching or if I see my daughter's friends itching. Tie up hair for school and socialising. I've come to rather relish the chat time and tghe artisan craft of thorough nit-combing - good luck!
  16. this was ages ago - odd to resurrect it... yes, they learned a lesson from this (put things away, look after your things if you value them) no, I don't think it was perceived as a "giveaway" - we live down a dead end street yes, I replaced it (and I'm glad I did) ibilly99 - I don't think its strange to expect people not to steal from children and quite what saudia arabia has to do with the price of fish I'm not at all clear and what's an "epitath"?
  17. There are 2 sorts of JSA - contributions based (medium term, not means tested and nothing to do with how much savings you have)which depends on you having made sufficient NI contributions and income based JSA (means tested, less than 16k savings). Both HIDEOUS to claim and result in fortnightly ritual humiliation sessions at Peckham job centre and a step into a world of self-esteem corrosion.
  18. I've found them to be absolutely lovely. Chatty, helpful and very friendly ... maybe it's a differnt team?
  19. I wondered if you'd seen this which are micro grants for small organisations to increase volunteering capacity. 1 week to go and there's 66 grants of up to ?1000 available - seemed right up your street ....
  20. James - that sounds great - I don't think it would take much to make a real difference - I;ll have a look and talk to the neighbours
  21. James - that would be absolutely excellent thank you so much. Please let me know if there's anything I can do to support that request. I did speak to some community officers at some kind of Southwark event whether we could try and make it more off putting for cars who accelerate down the road and swing round into the turning at ther bottom at speed to turnaround. I'd thought about some large planters or something to provide an off putting baffle, or some willow screens. Not to stop access just make cars slow down and think - especially where there is no pavement. http://streetswiki.wikispaces.com/Guerilla+Traffic+Calming They seemed to think that that this might be quite a problem so I didn't pursue it. But we have had some hair-rasing moments with the same drivers who we try to talk to but who have become very aggressive. (ie I think that the only thjing that will work is an enforceable speed limit).
  22. It's not ideal and the streets look messy but here are some ideas: - sharing bins? I can't believe that every household needs a big blue bin each and a big green one - especially 1 or 2 adult households. We barely produce a bin bag full of non recyclable rubbish Is there any posisbility the council could coordinate this? - a big problem seems to be people leaving bins on the street or not having them on their property even when there is room - bin covers #1 - bin covers #2 - you don't really need the big brown bin and the small one isn't really obstrusive
  23. it should be speed limit of 5mph as part of the road is shared with pedestrians and children play there but the crazed loons who use the street for parking but don't live there treat it like a racetrack.
  24. Six Dinners Sid?
  25. I had my saddle stolen too (Brooks) ... Had it replaced and attached with a cable and padlock ... hopefully a bit more off-putting
