  1. ha ha and here was me thinking this would be a 3 page discussion of the relative merits of the brownies versus the woodcraft folk ...
  2. yup - they mostly were when I wanted to use them - I ended up buying a car. Great that there are going to be so many more - it only really become a more viable alternative if there are lots really nearby
  3. jenny - short for genitalia. Vagina's not quite accurate, is it..
  4. you can use the cycle bypass the other way and it brings you to waterloo bridge quite easily - if you come up portland street (turns into brandon street) and then take the cycle path to come out onto Rodney road 0- follow it round onto Heygate street (ie take the Elephant and castle bypass the opposite way) follow it round cross at the cycl;e crossing onto churchyard row then up brrok drive, kennington road, bayliss road
  5. we've had this is our house. One thing you can do is make up a homemade rehydration solution: 1 tsp salt, 8 of sugar to a litre of boiled, cooled water.
  6. ah yes - the milkwood road issue. I have to confess that I sometimes do take a right there but you can wiggle it by going round onto railton and then down a joining side street
  7. you don't need to go round E&c there's a brilliant cycle bypass. I go from ED to Oxford Circus via Peckham, Elephant, Waterloo and Soho and here is my route if that link doesn't work you can also see it here Its great and there's nothing too scary. I don't do the canal path I take it quite easy, stop for red lights and don't filter unless its very safe to do so and it takes me about 45 minutes to do the 7.75 miles. This is another version that goes via Dulwich Village and avoids big roads, you cut across them and there are good lights, a wiggle round Kennington Park, over Lambeth Bridge, by Green Park up the Mall cycle path then wiggle through Mayfair to Oxford Street.
  8. yup its quite easy. Me and my nanny sorted it out between us. I think my nanny called OFSTED to get the info then I found a two day course she could attend (she sorted out the first aid course and crb check). Its was a bit of a faff but not too bad.
  9. http://www.smallfamilies.co.uk/ - not that cheap ....
  10. Also the fabulous Mike Marsh.
  11. Oh poor thing. I was with two small children and without heating or hot water for nearly 4 weeks over christmas and it was absolutely horrible. Eventually I persuaded my landlord to let me buy plug in oil filled radiators. I now have four. Please be in touch if the boiler breaks down again I'll gladly loan them and have a car so could drop them off...
  12. My life with British Gas service contract has been hellish. 5 visits before they called out the manufacturers for the dishwasher (it got fixed quickly once the bosch man came out) and then nearly 4 weeks of no heating and hot water over the coldest bit of winter with missed appointments and bodge jobs over more than 6 visits. good luck.
  13. Man in Seat Sixty One has some very good options. Train (from Liverpool Street) / ferry / train looks good to me, especially with small child, and very cheap
  14. there's also the vast back catlogie of Swedish Wallander - much better than the Brit Ken version imho
  15. Dulwich village infants is open

  20. but probably worth noting that if you travel with kids you'll probably need to get them a kids photo oyster as you will still need to buy a ticket for them if you are travelling via your oyster. The cost is capped at a pound off peak.
  21. traffic bad all over s London took 2 hours in a cab from kings x to se22 - cost 76 quid .....
  22. I'm reluctant to talk about my births at all - both were fine; more than fine, actually brilliant and exciting and rather marvellous. Those stories don't go down very well either. Really I want to bang on about why homebirth and active labour and water and no pain relief made my experience of giving birth one of themost thrilling experiences of my life but I feel there's a very strong sense that you really shouldn't impose your opinion or experience on anyone else.
