  1. If you jump on the overground from Forest Hill or HOP to Shoreditch and then take no 8 bus it drops you outside the Buddhist centre in Roman Road. Lots going on there. Sorry couldn't be more helpful locally.
  2. Si Manga the Italian is lovely and you have 363 to Horniman and Forest Hill and onto Crystal Palace with lots of independent shops and cafes, 63 to Peckham and beyond up to Blackfiars and Kings Cross. Easy for overground at HOP and as said Peckham Rye station. You can walk to Bellenden road and also the Gowlett pub (with there amazing pizza's apparently I havent had one) the 2 little pubs there have nice gardens for the summer and the Clock House has a lovely quite bit outside (although I think expensive) and yes the surgery is great. My friend lived by the co-op and had no trouble getting around as the buses are frequent. There are some nice places to explore so long as your happy with a bus ride. Hope it works out for you.
  3. Annabel my thoughts are with you and your family and your sons friends at this time.
  4. This may be good for people with hidden disabilities to show a driver of a bus for assistance in getting a seat or at least not driving off before you are sat down. http://www.tfl.gov.uk/assets/downloads/travel-support-card-printable.pdf

Is there still such thing as disability working allowance? even if people didn't get money then maybe they could get a badge of some kind through that. Just a thought.

I totally understand this and when people are moaning I say dont judge the book by the cover...I have a friend whose son died at 18 due to a heart condition you so could not see and his twin suffers a similar one and on the surface she looks healthy and young and fit but the underlying truth is different. I see Baby on Board badges and hear there are sisability badges maybe one of these would help...poss they should make a badge saying 'unseen disability' which could help a lot of people.

Just been getting quotes for car insurance today and spoke to many different companies and they all asked if I had a criminal record - this is the first time I have ever been asked that so must be something new they are doing. Just thought I would let you know...

I hate it when the abled person expects you to get out of your seat when you are on the outside before the bus stops so they can get ready to get off. I make it clear now that I will stand up ONCE the bus has fully stopped and people have been really really rude to me about it, including one women who tried to climb over me to get out!

  14. I agree with the asking bit too but it is embarrassing sometimes to ask and also whilst we are there it would also be nice if people were aware of disabilities, I have been on and off of crutches for the past 30 years (due to a road accident - knocked over by a cyclist and it was my fault before anyone asks) and have currently been on 2 crutches full time since May this year. I have had to stop using the overground during rush hour so work was hard for 3 months and when I was made redundant another job came up but I could not travel to it as it meant using the tube (no hope of a seat) (so any local job offers appreciated). But also travelling on the bus is really hard as if the disability is with your leg/s then there are only a few seats that you can actually sit in so sometimes you have to let busses go or if you could have got on - say for example at Elephant and Castle then you are stampeded out by the masses and have no chance. I have to say though I agree with the original poster here as I have on numerous occassions, when only being on 1 crutch given up my seat for pregnant women on a packed train and likewise a heavily pregnant woman recently gave up her seat for me - and even on our conversation no-one else offered another seat. I am not saying these were ED people Im just saying awareness goes along way.
  15. I saw this on BBC news - and followed the link to Wandsworth Council site http://www.wandsworth.gov.uk/news/article/12081/burglars_using_front_door_stickers_to_identify_easy_targets so it is worth checking - we have had a couple random people knock on the door the last couple of weeks during the day, when luckily we have been home, so now keeping a watch for any new signs outside. It does say on the Wandsworth site to remove and destroy but I think it would also be a good idea to notify Community Safety Team or 101, esp if they are trying to track intelligence. Keep safe everyone

  20. if you are willing to buy something and someone offers you it by PM how long is reasonable before they sell it to someone else?
  21. Agree we did it last weekend and although I made more than I paid for a pitch it was disappointing everyone bartering really badly and some people were so rude - i refused to sell them things ... had 2 pairs brand new leather shoes with labels on the bottom one for ?60 and one for ?40 and people were offering ?1 for them - it was insulting although I didn't want much but a fiver each would be nice, better off selling things privately on eBay. Anyway the women next to us told us Norwood is much better although you have to book in advance but they said its decent for both selling and buying and everyone is happy when they leave so may go to have a look. Happy hunting and if anyone finds a good one please let me know. Thanks
  22. Some very good points from all that have posted ... I should have quantified that the man in TH who was crying for help told me he couldn't remember who he was or where he lived and didn't know where he was. He said he was under the hospital (but couldn't remember which one) for mental health problems (well his words were 'because I am a nutter') ... he told me he had not taken his medication because it made him feel ill and could remember what it was as the hospital had recently changed it and it was at his place (which he couldn't remember where) and that he had just been walking to get away from 'what was going on in his head' (his words) ... I left him in a cafe and got him some food when he said that he was sorry he was having one of his 'episodes' and it was now over and he would be ok and that he would go to Whitechapel hospital (which I offered to take him or get him a cab - which he refused. I and he had told this all to the ambulance and the police - so for me I was upset that they couldn't do anything and wouldt even check his name against any missing people descritions. Hope it worked out for him in the end. I am reluctant to talk with people who I can see clearly have mental health problems now after that and other similar experiences...which I feel relly bad about.
  23. Hey Ratty I moved from TH to here - and once met some guy over there who was clearly unwell mentally he was crying and begging for help. I called an ambulance and they arrived with the police and he refused to go to hospital and because he hadnt hurt anyone they said fine and left him in the street. I complained to the emergency services and they said there is nothing we can do until he hurts someone! Great no help for people ill and then when they hurt someone they get arrested. Good system...
  24. Aww that is such a shame poor guy ... hope he is ok ... he was just standing staring it looked like it was overwhelming I was going to stop and question why it took so many police but was late for an important meeting due to all the roads beieng dug up at the moment. I ran a housing project a few years back and had a lad who was schizophrenic and couldnt get any help from the police to section him they just kept arresting him and eventually I got a great psychiatrist in the court to assess him and he finally got help. Hope that guy gets the help he needs...
