  2. Interesting points Moos - and I think you did get the point across Some interesting thoughts on the issue here: Schools
  3. I've started a new thread to discuss this one here
  4. to carry on the conversation started here
  5. Having used the trams in Croydon and Sheffield, as well as the local buses there, I agree completely with Jeremy problem for me with the Croydon tram is it doesn't go anywhere I want to go - doesn't mean it's not useful to locals If a tram existed between ED and Elephant and Castle I would be made up (tram stops at roadside - which is worth about 15 minutes of my day compared to meandering around the bowels of E&C station)
  6. Absolutely right Keef! I suspect it's another thread as well - but until we get booted off... I haven't been to school in a looooooooooooooooooong time, and never in the UK, so I'm not sure how the curriculum deals with the empire, slave trade and so forth. I imagine after decades of "political correctness gone mad", it probably doesn't glorify it but I wonder how black kids learn the lessons and if that plays a part in the call for seperate schools? (which would still be a bad idea) That's a thought that has just occurred so feel free to correct me
  7. He is - he's a gent. With a twinkle in his eye teh last 2 times he has spoken to me But Huguenot's point is the reverse - which white comic could play to a mostly black club audience? I'm not sure I agree with him that there aren't any mind you
  8. OMG David Carnell - just the mention of Kazaa has resurrected long-buried memories/nightmares. It pretty much ruined 2 pcs of mine These days I only ever use online freebies if the track definitely isn't available anywhere else. Or if the artist in questions says they aren't bothered. So, when I am consumed by the need to hear Shep Pettibone's 12" mix of the Psychedlic Furs track; Shock, I use.... Soulseek
  9. some good points all around to be sure but whilst Huguenot is correct to highlight the differences between racial history and prejudice versus the releative comfort of gay people, it does so at the cost of understanding the extent of prejudice and violence experienced. You could equally argue that Jewish people were doing alright compared to black people before you know who came along and started gassing them (along with.. who was it again......oh yeah, gay people) Saying hetero's get attacked as well is disingenuous - you weren't attacked because you were straight (caveat: I don't know this to be 100% true, but I would be willing to put money on it). And was it the red scarf? or was it the glasses? ;-) I would imagine most of us work in relatively liberal occupations (including the non liberals on here) but having worked in blue collar situations before it is pretty amazing just how widespread hompophobia is. "Parading your sexuality" is also a pretty ungenerous phrase. As with Keef, I'm no fan of PDAs but there are plenty of straight people indulging in them and not getting attacked for their narcissm! Back to pk's point - a slight apology. I'm not meaning to come down against free thought/speech/expression which I understand is what it sounds like. I would hate to see legislation such as the recent anti-faith act extended. And yet, if I understand James' point correctly, we as a society do not accept, even with all of our free speech, some insults because of the legitimacy it gave to the harsh-treatment doled out. James may be "wrong" to compare the two - but are we really saying "dunno what his problem is really - gays have it alright and have nothing to complain about?" Maybe it is what people are saying but whereas when he previously said statements like "you don't know what you are talking about unless you are gay" and I dismissed him as a prissy old queen*, I think he might have more than a point * yes, there is a subtext. Well done
  10. Hat's off all around to the England display - more of the same please. But that Walcott seems unnaturally level-headed doesn't he? I'm glad he has learned to be a bit more selfish as well.... Give him 5 years and he will be awesome I'm pretty pleased with the Republic result - by all accounts it's a tough place to get something from and we seem to be more solid under Trappatoni. Norn Irn did pretty well too, and glad to see Scotland get the three points Now if only Bale had converted that penalty for Wales...
  11. If the hi-fi guy on LL can cordon off that much space it would indicate that it is indeed private property and not obstructing a public highway (even tho if you ask me it bloody is!)
  12. you missed the last one Aced - a top day it was too (even if water cuts on the Upper East Side prevented us getting to the Plough and Mag)
  13. well we can ALL agree on that then ;-) I think Dave is a big boy as well with a teeny bit of Devil's Advocate going on in his arguments
  14. easy Keef - how is DaveR being jumped on? may be true but it's probably equally true in reverse for gay men watching straight couples kiss - but no one is going around attacking straight couples? And as long as people are attacked then it's more likely there will appear to be fewer of them, as they aren't going to tell people if it raises the risk of being attacked I don't think the thread has been annoying at all - both pk and DaveR have expressed one side of the argument and people like James and me have expressed another. S'alright isn't it?
  15. but then that IS why *Bob* used "Context is everything" as his opening sentence
  16. Oooh good one Izodia. Lady Mac has never posted but the amound of detail she is able to recall if I say something "off" is unreal
  17. Am I missing something in this argument? Trams carry a lot more passengers per sq foot, ergo in a congested city they are more efficient at carrying people around. Where is the downside?
  18. That does sound suspiciously like an old judge telling a rape victime that if she WILL wear short dresses... etc. Which I don't believe for a second you meant...
  19. On balance I'm for it but it is worth bearing in mind some of the downsides Down for some anyway
  20. Yeah pk made the same point and I do agree to an extent - Then again you are talking to a born and bred Catholic, 5 years altar boy service and a mother who genuinely believes she is going to hell for missing mass sometimes! If I can shake it off.... ;-)
  21. I love Bar Story - but on a Friday night it's going to be heaving isn't it?
  22. I know cars are meant to stop - but plenty of areas they don't at all. Mostly pretty good around here and I reckon if I'm nice to them they'll carry on being nice to me
  23. The Castle is a cheeky one Steve after all the trouble in the past (I would be up for it) The Harverster - is it a pub? Would the bar area have room on a Friday night? I'm not going to say no to it - but my inclinations would be: Montpelier Rye Hotel Magnolia (same location as recent drinks but new venture by new people - would probably appreciate the support?) Nuns Head
  24. You have just outlined some of the reasons why I gave up on the tube/train combo and started the bus/legs combo. I just can't convey how MUCH more relaxd I am (even if it means allowing some more time to read)
  25. bad week at the office for you isn't it?- I feel for you All the best for the future
