  1. Asset - please will you be our PM 'cos our last ??? ones have been *add expleteive of choice* Celineblondon - never thought I'd be part of history ::o . Free Tibet in our lifetime? Did you make it up to the rally at Kinds X?
  2. SeanMacGabhann Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > To actually achieve some kind of progress in Tibet > requires lines of communication Agreed, but Gordo dropped the ball here by allowing today to go ahead. China steadfastly refuse to enter into any dialogue but he COULD have put pressure on at a high political level by refusing to allow the torch coming through London but decided to bend over and touch his toes and take the power of the Yuan up to the hilt. Horrid (not so) little man.
  3. So far the only headlines I've seen since we waved the REAL torch off at Kings X, was about " Clashes along Olympic torch route" c/o BBC website. I'd much rather they talked about the sheer number of pro-Tibet protesters there. Don't get me wrong, I'm not against the Olympics in any way but I think it is sick that China can, effectively, buy credibility by hosting the Olympics. It appears that the IOC is as corrupt as your average Prime Minister/President. Just watching Sky news which is definitely more balanced. Good on them.

Gordo has let the side down down. Again.
  5. Yep, ED was represented..!! Up at the British Museum and then herded on (eventually.....:( ) to Kings Cross for the rally. We tried to get to Whitehall but the Police had other ideas. Very Beijing-esque...... All very peaceful despite some less than helpful policing (and no, I'm not anti-police but in fact generally pro-police) bon3yard Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > However I do get the distinct feeling that nations involved > in an illegal war in a far off land where hundreds > of thousands of people have been liquidated in the > last 5 years should tread very, very carefully > when commenting on the internal politics of an > alien regime. Except that thousands of people demonstrated against that too. Sadly, our democratically elected Government chose to ignore us. Those that are comparing the PR job that the Beijing Olympics is with that of the Berlin Olympics in 1936 have a good point IMO. Except that back then PR was known as propaganda, and genocide (Tibet) was called ethnic cleansing. My, how far we've come........ Remember the boycott of sport in South Africa?? Only difference is that we didn't do billions of ?'s of trade with SA like we do with China. Brown should be ashamed of himself for planning to attend the opening ceremony. Given the level of support for Tibet in the UK he should never have allowed today to happen but given that he is a politician, what would we expect. Hopefully though, we managed to cause the Chinese government some embarrassment by exercising one of our last remaining democratic rights and Paris is next....... Shame the UK media have done such a hatchet job on the protest.............
  6. Apparently she is feeling a bit sore after having a moment in Foxtons, while eating her free fish & chips from Seacow. Something to do with her high horse falling off its soap box while choking on principles...... Getting back on thread (and freely admitting that I had got the EDT mural mixed with the GG mural) it is now in a fetching candy stripe sort of configuration, albeit it white on off-white. Although the mural was looking a bit past its best, I don't think that they (presumably the owners) have made things any better. Perhaps a second coat of whitewash is being planned..?
  7. Er.... didn't I say that it would have been better to fix the mural? Must be those 'shit schools' you talk of, not learning you to read proper. Allfornun said "No doubt someone/group let it go on in order to get this thing removed". Excellent. A conspiracy theory too! Or tosh, perhaps. And as for the whole class/gentrification business, I don't think I've had a coversation about class or even considered my own class status for at least a decade but this forum thrives on it. Not old things Old Skool are cool, y'know.
  8. FFS...!! (6) Who, exactly, is supposed to have sanctioned this so-called "gentrification" of ED and its surrounds? As someone who has lived here for nigh on two decades, I can say that the regeneration of Lordship Lane etc can only be a good thing. I'd much rather places like Northcross Road were busy with the stalls etc on a Saturday than be a ghost town. The only downside I can really voice any concern about is the hand wringing of some (alledgedly) working class forumites who think that ED is now NAGAIUTB, based on one too many Moo Two type shops and a few over sized buggies. I think that Keef hit the nail on the head when he said that the mural was looking crap since it had been daubbed with graffiti and tags and I suspect that was the reason for the whitewash. Would it have been better to try to rescue it? Yes, but those same forumites would have undoubtedly lashed out at the (in their eyes) middle classes spending their disposible incomes on it and had a pop at Blake too. If you want to lay the blame, then do so at the door of those parents who's kids are left to vandalise their neighbourhoods without being pulled up for it. You know who they are. He/she may even be your little darling. Perhaps if there were more, decent (quality) parents about then places like ED wouldn't have gone downhill to the point where they require gentrification. On this basis alone, give me gentrification any day. It's actually called progress.

There is one going spare on the corner of LL & Upland Road! When they installed it, the radar was facing the wrong way so you got the sign flashing if the oncoming traffic was speeding and you were stationary. Shortly thereafter the radar gun bit fell off and its been silent even since. I'm sure you could pick up a new radar bit on eBay and resiting it would make for a fun day out...... :))

Or any other forum, anywhere else on the WWW where your drivel will be better received. Props to Seacow for listening to comments and responding. Will try you again next time I am down LL and hungry. Until then, staying faithful to Semas..... >:D<

Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > As I've said before.....have you noticed how many > empty eateries there are on Lordship Lane most of > the time?.....let's close half them down And replace them with what? Oh right, a job centre for all the poor buggers who'd be jobless. Very working class hero ????. What would you say if Blockbusters were to open next to Prime Time? All most of us want are shops that either enhance the Lane (SMBS et al) or at least don't drag it back to the grotty ol days. At least then I suppose we could reply to a thread about all the half empty bookies in ED suggesting we shut them all down.......
  12. I stopped going there a while back after 3 ropey lunches - cold chips, all fish no batter and lukewarm mushy (for mushy read 'liquified') pees. (td) Is it still run by the same people? There seemed to be a change of faces there a good while back and it hasn't been the same since. Anon
  13. > EDIT: BTW did you notice this one was lounged > without even a word from admin! Presumably due to rabid boredom due to the topic. EDF - 2007 topics at 2008 prices....!! ::o I think that most people don't mind kids in pubs or restaurants during the day, provided they behave 'within reason'. I was having lunch with my family at Barcelona on New Years Day along with several other families. One family had 2 children who ran amok, nearly pulling the till off its stand at one point and running around and generally acting like little demons. What did the parents do? Sweet F.A. apart from leaving a whole plate of food spilt on the floor and leaving the doors wide open on the way out. So really its up to us to have a word with the parents if the kids are annoying us, not gripe about it later on a forum. If you do have the cajones to have a word with the parents about their little darlings, then good on you. Or even with the staff if that's too confrontational for you. If you don't, please don't bore the rest of us with last years news. Anon

Cue usual class rant from Lousia, Dee et al............. :'( Sadly, I think that those of us who do care about what we eat and where it comes still struggle when eating out. (rather than shovelling in the Iceland feed a family for a fiver that is made from God knows what) Hopefully Hugh et al will have some luck, but judging by the hard time that Jamie Oliver had changing peoples attitudes re school dinners, I reckon it'll be some time yet before we can eat out and know the origin of what we are eating. With a bit of luck, though, some of ED's restauranteurs will pop up here to let us know..... Anon
  15. Administrator Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Lounged - no longer about "woolwich turning into a > betting shop" it is now about class, yummy mummies > etc etc Another quality hijack by Louisa, nice work. Is it just me or is this type of snobbery just as bad as every other you're-different-therefore-I-hate-you rubbish that people spout. In fact, I find this insipid sort of attitude far worse as it is dressed up as a 'goodie' fighting against the forces of 'evil'. It's just as bad as any other hatred, based on nothing but our differences - racism, homophobia, religious intolerence etc and those spouting it should be ashamed of themselves. Is there anything wrong with buying a takeout coffee on the way to have a quick flutter? No. Maybe splurging the winnings (if you are lucky...) in the scruffy much loved book store on the Lane and maybe picking up a little cute t-shirt for one of the kids on the way home? No. The Lane quite nicely reflects the mix of people in the area and goes to show that most of us can get along without having to pick on our differences to start a ruck instead. Do we need another bookie next door to a bookie who has another branch less than a block away (cnr Crystal Palace Rd & Northcote)..? Not really. I can think of a dozen things I'd rather see there but I won't use it as an excuse to launch a bigoted rant, unlike some on here.
