Southwark Council Assembly on March 28 - Older People
uncleglen replied to Community Cohesion's topic in The Lounge
(dare i say it-older people may not have the internet-)I am suspicious- probably trying to get older people to vote labour by going on about cut-backs by the coalition. By my observations over the years, whenever Labour have control of the council they make life difficult on the front line but spend money in the backroom and when people complain they blame it on the government. The misery created by the last government will probably mean that 'older' people will suffer until they die! -
Gay marriage? Let's have a referendum
uncleglen replied to silverfox's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Yes Otta you are right. (BTW The Catholic church has an exemption from policy on adoption for their agencies). The European Court is obviously influenced by the church and we should therefore have a referendum on getting out. Any legislative body that enforces human rights to the extent that we are living with subversive terrorist sympathisers and yet does not acknowledge that same sex couples wish to exercise their religious freedom by getting married in a church is flawed. Brain scans have shown that homosexuality is natural behaviour for some people and therefore they should no more be discriminated against than people with blue eyes. The anachronistic pervasion of religion into our lives (for example our taxes pay for faith schools!) is perverted in the extreme. -

Our opinions may be heard but that does not mean they will be considered! -
This is just the sort of trick the scumbags that get fuel and drive off without paying would get up to. Maybe the petrol stations could give away free security screws.

E-dealer- it is very difficult to turn right from Barry Road onto Peckham Rye. There are now large posts blocking the road next to the Harris Academy. If they are metal they won't last 5 minutes.
-
Yes thank you. I drive there everyday anytime between 4.45 and 6.15 pm.

Anyone observing the installation of the greenery please note the number of operatives involved. Recently a sapling was planted near me and there were 2 lorries, it was Saturday and there were 6 operatives. Why? -
very interesting at 3.30am. power went off and on in a second but the street was still pitch black- no streets lamps-Heber Road area

One reason that state children do better at uni is because they have had to become independent learners because of the chaos going on around them! Interesting to note that Harriet Harman's son went to St. Olave's in Orpington presumably because she and her husband (Jack Dromey, Trade Unionist), did not want to be seen sending him to DC or Alleyn's. I wonder if they claimed his travelling expenses? He could have walked to the DC or Alleyn's from his home. Why didn't he go to Kingsdale, eh?

They used to shovel the donkey dung into the cider vats to help with the fermentation Brendan. The donkies used to be harnessed to the apple press and turn it round!

Huguenot-I said we were told it (by experienced teachers in the training schools) not taught it- quite different. Sorry if that was not clear. You are right motorbird83 about the waste of talent and impoverishment of aspiration.A psychologist friend and I were discussing that the way that children are brought up now- much less discipline and lack of real stimulation, could have resulted in under-development of the parts of the brain responsible for self -control and self- regulation and emotional development.

Now that the BBC have had people on the news saying that there will be lots more riots because pupils who are excluded from school are not being given enough guidance or 'exciting' education certain sections ofthe population have carte blanche to do just as they like! -

Hopefully- at least the money won't be spent on art work by certain artists who are friends of certain politicians -
For a couple of years now, in the major supermarkets, the largest size of product is not always the cheapest option. Seen in tesco lately- Soya chocolate drink 2 for ?2 but one only costs 98p!

Fireworks? Is that to symbolise our hard earned money going up in smoke- sacrificed on the altar of political shenanigans? Wait and see. -

I totally object to my taxes being used to prop up faith schools- especially for religions which actively perpetuate homophobia and other anachronistic beliefs. -
I see that the junction of Upland Road and Peckham Rye, next to Harris Boys Academy has been permanently closed now. It is very difficult to turn right from the bottom of Barry Road onto Peckham Rye because of traffic cutting across to turn into Barry Road- any tips as to an alternative route onto Peckham Rye/Forest Hill Road without going up Lordship Lane?

No. We have had in the past when someone vandalised the box down the road.

This is still to do with 'family' (or not)and upbringing. I forgot to mention that my family was poor. Interesting to note that because of political correctness in school, it was practically impossible to get anything right. If you disproportionately (as a ratio of students being disciplined) disciplined black students you were racist; if you did not discipline them for fear of being accused of discriminating against them- you were being racist for treating them differently. So you were damned if you did and damned if you didn't. Another interesting thing that trainee teachers were told at the time was that if you were a woman teacher trying to discipline a black lad it will have no effect because they are used to being told what to do by their mothers all the time( no fathers present-apparently) and they will ignore you! The whole thing is a minefield and we just teach our subjects, keep our heads down, try our best to be pc and hope for the- or get out and do something else!

If a pupil in school has a certain 'level' of literacy when they enter secondary education ( the reading age changes periodically usually to acommodate fewer students!) then the student receives remedial support. No such support is given in mathematics. People are ready to admit that they can't 'do' maths but will not admit that they cannot read. It seems like a badge of honour to some people not to be able to 'do' maths, but without it people are dependent on those that can and have to trust them! Mathematics underpins all technology and is totally taken for granted.

Huguenot: The 'judgement' as you call it is made from years of observation and conclusions are allowed to be drawn from empirical evidence. For example. In my first ever teaching post I had problems with a young Asian lad, and sought the advice of my head of department. He spoke to the lad and said he was going to phone home- the lad practically begged him with tears included, not to, and asked for another chance. This teacher said he knew that would do the trick as Asian parents are strict. Since then I have observed this to be very common, and I have also observed that Cinese pupils are very studious and actually joke about how strict their mothers are. My own parents are from immigrant families and I had a strict upbringing also- my parents always backed the school and I would never tell them if I had been in trouble (very rare)or I would have been disciplined twice. I brought mine up in the same way.
