  1. I sincerely hope the legal challenge succeeds and the ltns are removed from Dulwich roads.

Enough of individuals like Rose bulling everyone to accept this ridiculous idea.

She care to say ‘no apology for keeping young children ‘as safe as possible’ - what about children living / walking / waiting on buses on Lordship Lane / Croxted / EDG, South Circular etc. ?

In what kind of parallel universe Rose and her chums live in ??

    The hypocrisy of it !

    https://southwarknews.co.uk/news/transport/dulwich-residents-threaten-council-with-legal-action-over-ltn/?fbclid=IwAR1NvLxSUNNcnN8GjX1VvoLaYjfqYVPgWO8ZjKH0V8CGpeLPugCTbzPWc0o

  2. Agree Rockets - I will never ever cycle in London, even tough I do outside of it. Miles and miles have been wasted on cycle lanes - it really shows after covid - cycle lanes empty all day long, squeezing cars and buses into reduced space.

LTN is an ideology and a very harmful one. Just look at the Underhill & South Circular junction today - Thames water dig out another hole near Esso petrol station in Forest Hill and the junction is absolutely and completely jammed - and even more so because of the Lewisham and Southwark ltns!

  3. I live on LL which has seen a massive increase in traffic since the road closures - so called ltn. It has made the traffic here much worst. More air pollution, more cars, more noise, much worst living conditions for the residents and ZERO enviromental benefits - on the contrary, idling traffic is making the pollution even worst.

What a great idea - push your crap to your neighbours garden and pretend the problem is solved.

  4. The money is wasted on vanity projects like LTN in East Dulwich, to keep already quiet and wealthy roads like Court Lane traffic free, so the residents there can feel like they live in a village (how lovely) and yet there is not enough money to keep the community centers going.

    https://southwarknews.co.uk/news/community/driving-hope-for-christmas-bermondsey-day-centre-needs-a-minibus-or-faces-closure/?fbclid=IwAR2AF2-04jRHgbXWBCxQL09vHZQDFctFZ7EVTgA1AkeW_PMOaxVKwBNZ9aw

  5. All of this is pure Monty Python.

The trains are very expensive and getting more so every year, they are completely unreliable, the infrastructure is old and has not been upgraded in years. Private train companies only care about profits and paying their shareholders.

The bus routes are changed for the worst, cut or scrapped altogether.

Number of people cycling is minuscule and yet big chunks of roads have been turned into cycling lanes which are empty 90% of time.

Nothing has been done for pedestrians, well, apart from ebikes and escooters scattered around on pavements, making walking even more difficult.

And LTN, mostly applied to wealthy / better off streets, forcing the congestion to the neighbouring roads and choking its residents.

How on earth all of this is going to make anything better?

  6. Local councillor says public meeting did not “enhance consultation”

A Southwark News report on the November meeting set up by five local residents’ associations to discuss the surprise closure of Turney Road quotes Cllr Margy Newens – who didn’t attend – as saying, “A meeting organised by a particular interest group at this stage is not a forum where everyone can contribute to the discussion equally and, as such, does not enhance the process of consultation.”

It’s a shame that local councillors themselves didn’t get round to organising a public meeting where residents and businesses could express their views.

Council leader dismisses Blue Badge petition

A petition signed by more than 600 people to allow Blue Badge holders through the re-designed Dulwich Village junction was heard at the Council’s cabinet meeting on 6 December. See the YouTube recording here (it begins at 28 minutes in, and lasts for 20 minutes). Cllr Rose’s table-thumping response begins at 36:00, and reaches its extraordinary climax at 44:45.

Separately, Blue Badge holders have written to Leader of the Council Cllr Kieron Williams, pleading to be allowed access through the Dulwich Village junction. This follows a failure by the Council to hold meetings with Blue Badge holders to carry out a survey of their needs. So far no response has been received.

The vital discussion about exemptions through LTNs for Blue Badge holders is going on in other areas of London too. See a Twitter thread from a Haringey Labour councillor, explaining why access for Blue Badge holders is so important, here.

No response from MP Helen Hayes

As we said in our last campaign update, we wrote to our local MP Helen Hayes on 22 November, following MP Andy Carter’s adjournment debate in the House of Commons, asking her to represent and champion her constituents’ needs, not just raise their concerns, at a national level. So far we have received no response.

At one point in our update, we referred to Richard Holden MP, parliamentary under-secretary of state for roads and transport, as Robert Holden. Thanks to those of you who alerted us to our mistake.

  7. Ex-Dulwicher: Hear hear, how about the junction of LL / South Circular and Sydenham Hill? And where does pedestrians come in to it? Or disabled?

"My personal opinion is that junction needs to be a cyclists dismount area (especially for anyone coming down Calton Avenue) as it is incredibly dangerous at the moment and that is the feedback I left when I responded to the consultation"

Which doesn't work for cargo bikes, bikes/trikes for the disabled, recumbents and, depending on the setup, some bikes with kids in/on/on tow. It's also a total pain if you're using cycle shoes with cleats

    And it's pretty much unenforceable.

Sorry Ex- I was forgetting the first rule of active travel - do nothing that even slightly inconveniences cyclists and build everything around their, and only their, specific needs.....

  8. "Do we need to talk about the relative danger of cars vs bikes and how having vehicles driving through what is supposed to be a car free area is dangerous."

How about the very real danger of cyclists vs pedestrians and how having cyclists through what is supposed to be a pedestrian free area dangerous?

Am walking from East Dulwich to Forest Hill train station often and then- Southern trains permitting - from London Bridge to St Thomas'. Not a single day goes by without a cyclist trying to run me over - nine out of ten cyclists do not understand what red / green lights mean!

I really would like to see people passing exams in order to get their cycle licence and a requirement for an ID in order to be able to cycle!!

  9. "measures to prevent the illegal and dangerous driving, automatic bollards, emergency service gates" - and all of this within a couple of streets in Dulwich Village. All the money, time and efforts spend on accommodating demands of a bunch of people who live in a bubble.

How about South Circular? What is the plan to reduce number of vehicles there? And EDG or Croxted? When will "the measures to prevent the illegal and dangerous driving, automatic bollards, emergency service gates" be introduced?

Oh the first world problems of Dulwich Village..

Not to mention there is no such thing as "Dulwich Square" - there is only closed Dulwich Village junction - and temporarily closed I hope.

  10. Where is Leemings, Margy, Rose, Simmonds, Khan, Heyes? Where are they? What did they say about the quality of air on LL, Croxted, South Circular, Underhill, Melford etc etc etc and how to make it better? I want to see the plan, a step by step plan and the timeline. Can anyone provide it?

And going back to what I said: when are the toilets in Dulwich park going to be refurbished? When will Dulwich Library have new computers? How can the money be spent on vanity, harmful projects like LTN which benefit privileged citizens mostly and yet there is none to provide hot water in the Dulwich park toilet?

And at the same time, Leemings & Margy are asking for donations so they can have Xmas tree on (temporarily) closed Dulwich Village junction, To say these people have no shame is a gross understatement!

  11. Every single resident who lives on Lordship Lane, Croxted Rd, EDG, South Circular, Underhill Rd, Crystal Palace Rd, Melford etc. etc. etc. and so on is affected by an increased traffic, increase in air pollution, increased noise caused by so called low (?) traffic (?) neighborhood (?) courtesy of cycling lobby and Southwark labour councilors.

And Southwark cllrs bulling TfL staff - what about that?

Was trying to find anything in The Guardian but no mention- they stick to pro LTN Peter Walker propaganda and ignore everyone else ( the majority).

    https://southwarknews.co.uk/news/transport/tfl-staff-left-upset-and-in-tears-by-abusive-southwark-council-staff-in-meeting-about-dulwich-village-ltn/

A letter challenging the legality of the “consultation” on the design of the Dulwich Village junction, particularly the closure of Turney Road, has been drafted by a local resident who is also a solicitor.

Is the "local resident who is also a solicitor" the failed Tory candidate in the recent local elections and who practices a completely different type of law?

  12. ULEZ is to cover all of London which I'm happy about..

Sadiq Khans said that ""(...) there is still far too much toxic air pollution permanently damaging the health of young Londoners and leading to thousands of early deaths every year, with the greatest number of deaths in the outer London boroughs."

and he also said this: “The latest evidence shows that air pollution is making us sick from cradle to the grave. Londoners are developing life-changing illnesses such as cancer, lung disease, dementia and asthma. And it’s especially dangerous for children.”

Dulwich labour councillours (especially DV LTN obsessed Leemings and Margy) and MP Helen Hayes who were too busy to attend the local meeting: what do you say to this?

How does what Khan says tally up with LTN? Which means pushing more traffic into already dirty and polluted roads like Croxted, EDG, LL, South Circular where many poorer residents live - what do you say? Why were you not at the meeting to say how great LTN is and how it makes the quality of air better for EVERYONE? It doesn't? What a surprise.

On many occasions we asked the local councillors Andy Simmonds and Catherine Rose (the Invisible) to tell us how the labour are planning to improve air quality on Lordship Lane and South Circular - we received no response.

Toilets in Dulwich Park are awful, dirty and there is no hot water to wash hands. It takes for ever to log in to a computer in Dulwich library - but who cares? Surely not Dulwich labour councillors.

  13. Campaign Update | 26 Nov

No. 12 saved – but no. 3 still delayed

TfL has decided not to axe the no. 12 bus route, which is good news for Dulwich locals. Other vital bus routes like the no. 3 are still delayed, however, by congestion on boundary roads caused by the LTNs.

No local councillors at public meeting

On 22 November, two days after the deadline for the Dulwich Village - Streets for people - Southwark Council “consultation” on the design of the Dulwich Village junction (both of Southwark’s proposals included the surprise closure of Turney Road), five residents’ associations held a public meeting to discuss local concerns. Topics raised were the damage being done to Village businesses, the displacement of traffic on to boundary roads, and the difficulties faced by vulnerable residents. Although invited, neither local councillors nor Dulwich’s MP attended. The organisers of the public meeting can be contacted via [email protected].

A letter challenging the legality of the “consultation” on the design of the Dulwich Village junction, particularly the closure of Turney Road, has been drafted by a local resident who is also a solicitor. If you live on or near Turney Road and would like to support this with your signature, please contact your residents’ association for further details. The closing date for signatures is 28 November 2022.

    Dulwich LTN in The Times

Janice Turner commented on the Dulwich Village LTN in The Times on 16 November. She notes the gigantic concrete planter at the junction and says, “I watch in awe at the money squandered and the self-righteous intransigence towards elderly residents or businesses.”

Debate in the House of Commons

On 12 November, One Dulwich sent an open letter to our local MP Helen Hayes asking her to support Warrington South MP Andy Carter in an adjournment debate about the way the LTN in his local area had been imposed despite strong local opposition.

On 18 November, Helen replied to One Dulwich, saying she had been unable to attend on 14 November owing to a prior commitment. She went on to say that she had been closely monitoring the progress of any low traffic interventions locally and raising the diverse views of her constituents with the Council.

We replied to Helen on 22 November saying that we are asking her to a) represent and champion her constituents’ needs, not just raise their concerns, and b) to do so at a national level, both in parliament and with Richard Holden MP, parliamentary under-secretary of state for roads and transport.

You can read the full text of the adjournment debate here. As you can see, Robert Holden stressed that authorities should listen and make changes to schemes in the light of real-world experience and feedback from local people. He also recognised concerns about poorly designed LTNs leading to increased congestion on boundary roads.

  14. What really worries me is that they want to close off an entire Dulwivh Village plus and push all traffic onto the LL and South Circular. The latter has never been as congested as it is now.

Obviously the council will ignore the outcome of the consultation as they've done previously because they don't care. Not sure how you get your arguments through to someone who is blinded by ideology.

  15. Last chance to object – deadline 20 November

If you haven’t already done so, please object to Southwark’s plans for the Dulwich Village junction. Not only do the proposals block blue badge holders, NHS workers and carers, but Southwark’s surprise closure of Turney Road would displace traffic over a wide area. See Object to junction plans — One Dulwich and forward the link to friends, family and neighbours – there is just a week left to register your views.

Our open letter to the Leader of the Council

Southwark’s Labour manifesto promised that Labour would work with TfL to reduce traffic on main roads and make bus journeys quicker and more reliable. The Dulwich LTNs have had the opposite effect. In our open letter, we ask Cllr Kieron Williams – who is now on the board of TfL – to explain. Add your voice to ours by emailing [email protected].

Our open letter to our MP Helen Hayes

On Monday 14 November, Andy Carter, MP for Warrington South, is leading an urgent debate on LTNs in Parliament because 87% of residents affected by closures in his constituency want them scrapped. In our open letter, we are asking our MP Helen Hayes to join the debate and support Andy Carter’s call for LTNs to be taken out if local people don’t want them – reminding her that the majority has always been against the closures in Dulwich. Contact Helen by emailing [email protected].

  16. Yeah but who cares?

People who voted Southwark labour? - No.

People living outside of LTN / off-main roads? No.

Southwark labour Cllrs - Hell no. Not for many years to come (as long as they get their salaries). Have they ever cared ? I do not think so

  17. I talked to someone from TW and they said the work is being carried out at 2-4am to minimise the impact on people as they often have to turn the water off - this apparently is why we don't see any activity there during the day. Who knows. I was on my way home around 2am on Fri and there was nobody.

It should be completed tomorrow - we shall see. I asked them to update the website with the latest status.

I agree r: the local councillours - has any of them been in contact with TW, tried to chase the repair?
