Not all all, James - wrong end of stick. I totally agree vegetarian food can indeed be great. My point is the same as yours: that - generally - that vegetarian options are poor (isn't this how your got involved in this thread). Hence, you can't expect meaty types to get excited about vegetables (ooer) having seen (and possibly tasted) the range of options that have been presented so often, for so long. The Aberdeen Steakhouse is a bad example. A nice piece of steak tastes great anywhere, with the minimal of expertise to make it so. The same cannot be said of broccoli.

I suspect a lifetime of crap, uninspiring vegetarian cookery hasn't help with the programming, either

My eating habits have been a mix of vegetarian / meat / fish - in fairly equal quantities - for some time. I feel like a sack of shit if I eat loads of meat all week, like on holiday sometimes. But even An Enlightened One such as myself won't order vegetarian food in a restaurant (certainly not as a main) because I identify 'eating out' with treats - of the meaty and fishy sort.
  5. This is great news. It's the only one I'd really want to order anything from. Hopefully the takeaway prices are down from the restaurant pricing level though - otherwise the orders will be infrequent.

Vegetarian-baiting is fun, of course. But let's be fair: anyone who wouldn't actually welcome an Ottolenghi-type affair in place of one of the 300 shit curry houses we currently have - must be crackers. In fairness to the meat gang, Ottolenghi does not offer 'one or two' non-veg dishes. Veggies are well catered for, but the restaurant bias is still meat & fish. And were we to be able to see the figures - I bet meat and fish orders account for a considerably greater share of the profits.

Local roofs are totally overrated IMO. Why plunge to your doom round here - when there are so many other much higher roofs in smarter parts of town?

Irrelevant bickering is the only thing keeping this thread alive. Fox and I ought to get a free meal for keeping 'The Patch' top of page. (Separate tables perhaps)

One last time. Try to understand. A set lunch at GR will cost you getting on for THREE TIMES the price of a set lunch somewhere locally (Patch looking to be on a par with other upper-priced places) By the time you've factored in wine, upwards of at least FOUR times more expensive I would say. Is one thing that is THREE or FOUR times more expensive than another - in any way - worthy of comparison. How does, say, a ?200k property stack-up against one costing ?600k? Are they the same?

Ooh, yeah - touched you last (etc) To attempt to draw a line under this (in case there is anyone left reading who has yet to lose the will to live) my point is that you've spent the last page stirring up a pointless row by way of utterly meaningless and facile comparisons - in order to piss over a new local business that hasn't even opened yet. Don't be a dick. If you must be a dick, do it somewhere else where it will cause less grief to some people who haven't spend the last god knows how long working to make something happen.

Are you being purposefully obtuse? Or just a bit dim? I can't decide. Not that it matters.

Well excuse me for being blunt, but if you don't actually know WTF you're talking about, maybe you should put a sock in it? For once.

Well said Foxy. Like you, I always get my facts from Tripadvisor. It's like 'the home of facts'. Tell you what Foxy - if we have a whip-round and can get ?41 together, we'll send you into GR and see how far it gets you. Whilst we watch through the window, laughing. I pledge a quid. "soft opening" I think this usually means 'we're not finished or ready but we're desperate to get something - anything - ringing through the tills pronto'. You can understand such pressure and the short-term logic but first impressions really do count. All you're ever going to get for your trouble is predictable moaning from the moaners, silence from the rest - and general confusion amongst all.

The Actress managed a very well attended and entertaining 'opening night' (organised / ticketed via the EDF) which got them lots of goodwill credit in the bank - and got the place off to a good start. I get the impression it isn't finished yet?

  24. Be upfront about who you are and how you might be connected. Don't throw a hissy fit at the first hurdle. Be upfront about who you are how you might be connected. Simples.
