  1. Having started this thread nearly 2 years ago now, I'm finally in my flat in Penge. Had my offer accepted this time a year ago, so it's been a long process (delay after delay in the chain, then a 4-5 week refurb.) Hard to say much about the area just yet as I haven't really explored properly but the high street seems to have plenty of useful shops and is 3-4 mins walk away, with Anerley and Kent House my nearest stations, 10 and 5 mins walk away respectively. I loved my 5 or so years in East Dulwich and I'll miss it having gotten used to having everything you could ever need on the doorstep and how easy it was to get around London from, but I'm looking forward to living somewhere new and in my own place.
  2. We seemed to get back up and running minutes after I posted that. I don't hold my breath that it'll last but let's see.
  3. They've so far offered me a 22 pence rebate...! The cause of the situation is out of their hands, so I won't blame them for that. But as I said earlier it's how they deal with it after the fact that reflects of them. Staff have still been helfpul, but I would expect more, particularly as I've had to fork out ?15 on extra data from my mobile provider to make up for the loss of the Virgin service. So far, somewhat unimpressed.
  4. Been out for us since yesterday morning, though was working overnight strangely. I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt this time as it was the fault of a construction worker. However it's how they cope in the aftermath that'll reflect on them as a company. Whilst it's incredibly annoying, so far all their staff I've spoken to have been helpful and apologetic. I will expect some kind of rebate though.
  5. Thanks all for the tips. As far as I can tell they are solid wood with a lacquer/varnish finish. I tried using baking soda and water to get rid of the water marks and it worked really well on one that was less ingrained, and on another it didn't make much difference. I gave them all a good feed with some beeswax and one of them is now looking like it doesn't need anything else doing to it. I'll try and get hold of an electric sander for the other two then apparently spray-can lacquer is the way to go according to a friend of a friend who is a furniture maker...
  6. Thanks! What sort of stain would that be? Aren't there many different types, or would I just try and find the best one to match the rest, as I don't intend to touch the legs as they're all pretty much fine.
  7. Bought a nest of tables (Thank you Barbara of the EDF!) all of which have to varying degrees, pretty knackered tops - marked all over, down to the bare wood in a lot of areas, cracked and flaking lacquer/varnish whatever it may be. Pics attached. I like a lived in look on furniture, but these are a bit too far gone even for me. I know they'll need an abrasive, but not what - fine sandpaper, fine wire wool? After I've done that, then what. Pretty sure they are not just waxed/oiled bare wood, but have some kind of coating, don't know what. Googling returns so many different suggestions I'm a bit stumped. Any help gratefully received!
  8. Another +1 for Jon Peck at Colin White associates. Used him a while back for a flat purchase and was really happy with the service he provided. Quick, efficient, and an in depth but easy to understand report for those not in the know with building jargon. Reasonable price too in comparison to others.
  9. I used Glazer Delmar recently for conveyancing. I plan to use them again for other services and would do again for conveyancing as and when the time comes.
  10. I traveled on the 07:30 train from ED to LB this morning and it was fine, no more or less busy than usual!
  11. I used allboutlaptops on Rye Lane a few years back to fix a laptop that had died. Problem was found and fixed all within the space of a few hours on a Sunday and for a reasonable price. Worth a look.
  12. Whilst this is no doubt a good thing in terms of improved transport links, you'd have hoped that the treacherous junction of East Dulwich Grove and Lordship Lane would have been addressed before more buses were thrown into the mix.
  13. Excellent news. In a few months time my nearest station will be Kent House on the Orpington-Victoria route so to have it brought into the Overground network is a real reassurance that the service to and from Victoria will be reliable. This whole endeavour is surely only good news for SE London.
  14. If anyone left a pair of glasses on top of a wheelie bin in Matham Grove, I have them so please give me a direct message.
  15. I have now raised my objections to this, which are pretty similar to all those previously mentioned. I have also added the problem of an increase in traffic along Melbourne Grove and Railway Rise as a result of the new flats/retail premises. I have urged them to make a site visit before making any decisions as well.
  16. Yep, happens to us every Sunday evening pretty much without fail. Internet is so slow as to be rendered unusable.
  17. Came back to East Dulwich after a week away to find a letter from the council about this. For further objections, you need to do so by writing to the planning inspectorate, quoting the reference number APP/A5840/W/15/3135088. The Planning Inspectorate, 3/10B Eagle Wing, Temple Quay House, 2 The Square, Temple Quay, Bristol, BS16PN. Letters must be received by 17th Jan. If you want them to acknowledge receipt of the letter you need to request this, likewise if you want to know the result of the appeal process. Sad. The planning inspectorate push things through with little regard to objections in my experience.
  18. Such a shame. In my experience, having been on both sides of the appeal process admittedly, these things will almost always go the way of the party seeking planning permission. It essentially renders local planning decisions a complete joke, and just another hoop to be jumped through on the way to the appeal. I fear for the future of these cottages.

Couldn't get anywhere near that 5 miles up > the road in East Dulwich Elmers End is also home to Zi'Teresa which is one of the best neigbourhood Italian restaurants I've ever eaten at. The staff are absolutely delightful and the food is consistently great, and often outstanding. Definitely highly recommended if you haven't been yet.
  20. Having just been through this and seen numerous flats in numerous areas I would probably say the following (though most of this is said in greater detail in the thread I started last year, posted above): Penge (Where I'm currently proceeding on a flat) - Useful high street, couple of nice pubs, good stations (17 mins to Canada water from Penge West, 17 mins to Victoria from Penge East) and buses, good mix of housing stock for most budgets, bit rough round the edges but feels fine. Sydenham - long and useful high street with anything you could really need, station and buses again decent. South Norwood - Feels pretty run down right now, high street isn't up to much at the moment. Probably has the best transport though in terms of trains, with the overground and incredibly quick trains to London Bridge. Housing stock probably the best priced of the areas I've seen. Croydon - Not half as bad as I thought it would be. Rapidly changing + improving + increasing in price, but prices are still (relatively) affordable. Good trains from West and East Croydon.
  21. According to Zoopla that maisonette was last sold in 1998 for the princely sum of ?92500. Allowing for inflation let's say that's ?130000 in today's money, yet it's being sold now for circa ?600k. A friend from work bought a flat in Deptford the same year for ?30k (about ?50k today). I expect its price then reflected its undesirable location and I'm not sure how much his is worth now. I hear the area as a whole is improving, but I viewed a flat there recently - grim immediate location, grim dirty stalinist 60s council block, felt like properly rough oppressive inner city London, and the flat was on at ?300k. Regardless of the circumstances that have led us to this point, at this stage you almost just have to laugh at the ridiculousness of the whole situation.
  22. If it's the Tab S you're talking about then this was/is pretty well known for having a really great screen, so if you're going to use it for tv/movies on the go this may be a selling point for you. Worth watching a few reviews on YouTube from the likes of Android Authority, Pocketnow, Detroitborg etc. Expect some of these will do comparison vids with the ipad too.
  23. Has it ever been exposed to water? In any quantity? This could include steam if you happen to have it in the bathroom when showering. Parts could have corroded slowly, and that is only now affecting the phone.
