Thanks both - I wasn't doubting the report so much as shocked it hasn't been picked up by the news. Is it really so commonplace these days as not to even rate a mention on the local news or radio? Re the Council: I believe the police have a statutory power to apply for the terms of a licence to be reviewed, so they might be another avenue to explore.

I'm curious to know if there has there been any confirmation of the shooting by authorities (or anyone other than the original poster) ? It must have generated a whole load of noise, sirens etc - and it seems a bit odd that no-one living near heard anything. Must be the hour I guess?

Noisy helicopters during the night!

In my experience, Southwark are unlikely to chop a street tree down if it's merely overgrown - they will prune it back however. They are also pretty hot on ensuring that householders don't randomly chop down trees within their own property. Our neighbours wanted to remove one of their trees (which we would also have liked because it blocks out quite a bit of light into our property in summer) but the tree surgeon wouldn't do this because the tree was of sufficient height that it would have required six week notification to Southwark's tree department and his experience was that they would then automatically TPO it because the tree was healthy - just big. He also described Southwark as one council that he wouldn't even think of trying to breach the rules with. Don't know how accurate that is, but that's what he told them.

I suspect the Freedom of Information Act is your friend. If you ask about the specific location of the cameras, they may properly decline to answer your question on the grounds that the answer relates to law enforcement, but I expect questions about why they have been located in Marmora Road and the intended purpose of the footage (as well as how long it will be kept), not to mention the cost, would be fair questions to ask. Don't be put off if the first answer is "no", the ICO tends to take a much more robust line (in my experience) than local authorities will, until you complain to the ICO. http://www.ico.gov.uk/what_we_cover/freedom_of_information/your_right_to_know.aspx

See that others have beaten me too it, but isn't this the report we discussed at length at the start of this year? Here and here. Has anything changed with the plans or has our esteemed councillor only just noticed? I'm guessing that the reason for the article is that it's now confirmed rather than only planned.

Flash Gordon would be in my top 10, but Bring It On would top the list of guilty pleasures for me...

jodevious Wrote: > Libel: defamation by written or printed words, > pictures, or in any form other than by spoken > words or gestures. > > I think this accurately describes any unfounded > finger pointing? :'( Ok, I'll bite. The problem with c/p stuff from the internet is it's generally a bit more complicated that wikipedia or similar suggests: For example, defamation doesn't mean anything false - the statement has to lower the claimant in the estimation of right-thinking members of society generally, expose him to ridicule or contempt or cause him to be "shunned or avoided". Whether or not a statement has that effect is measured against the standard of the reasonable man and not a specific class of people who represent the views of the claimant (to the extent that these views are different from the majority of society). Not sure how what has been said above would cause this. Back on topic, there's a bit of overreaction on all sides here IMHO. I was really pleased when the FHT got its makeover as it's one of my locals. The managers have done some great stuff but it's clearly not that busy every night and not surprising they'd try some different stuff to get the punters in. However, I don't think anyone expected it to turn into what's effectively a nightclub running every weekend and there are definitely increasing noise issues for local residents as a result. Jo, is there anything you can suggest (as the promoter) to try and manage the noise issue both inside and outside the venue?

The first planes in the morning over ED start at 4:40am if you can believe that. There are, in theory, restrictions as to the number and types of planes which can fly over residential areas in London between 4:30am and 6am, but one of the councils (Hammersmith I think) recently tried to enforce this against the Government and lost. In my experience, there's normally three or four planes which come over between 4:45 and 5:15 am (big long haul overnight flights) then a break, then a rush at 6:15am as described above for the shorter early morning flights. I've pretty much got used to it now, and as others have said, it seems to be month on/month off in terms of whether ED is on the approach path or not.

...replace the palm tree on Goose Green roundabout with East Dulwich's very own version of Speakers' Corner. Right to speak/order of speaking would be conferred by a ticketing system much like a supermarket cheese counter, and I'd implement some kind of XFactor style voting system where passersby could vote speakers off. Thursday nights would be reserved, however, for famous ranters: Kevin Keegan, Alec Baldwin, Louisa* etc *TFIC for the avoidance of all doubt - I think Louisa's fab (in her current incarnation)

LP, what worked for us was doing a Wii system update and configuring the Wii (via our router) to use a static IP at least 10 iterations away from anything else on the network (so 192.168.0.150 when the closest other device is 192.168.0.101) and then rebooting the router. Didn't need to port forward or put it into a DMZ for example, and it worked fine through our router firewall. You're not using a Belkin router are you, I know that a number of them aren't compatible with Nintendo WFC? Sean, it's a bit clunky for sure, but the Wii wasn't exactly sold on the basis of its stunning interactive networking capability!

Well, I actually didn't come last in one of those races so Woo Hoo! Ant, sorry about the random messages - ruffers and I were scrapping over the controller. Didn't enjoy the battle so much (as the only person on my team). Luv Peckham - let us know if you want to try again sometime.

It's also good to see there are some happy punters out there too - this thread will probably tip me into giving the Herne another try (not at a weekend, mind) - so maybe worth it from the Herne's perspective after all. I've also got nothing against waiting a fair amount of time for freshly cooked food. But 35 mins between courses was pushing it (for me personally) and when the wrong food came I out, I would say I was a bit disappointed, not to mention hungry, rather than impatient. As I said above, it was the approach of one particular individual that spoiled it for me, although I acknowledge it probably isn't very fair to judge a whole establishment on that.

Next Tuesday I will watching Brain of Britain at the BBC - no, best not to ask. Can either join the one after that - although what about Bank Holiday Monday evening - or are people out and about then? LP - happy to help with connection testing tonight if you want, from about 8:30pm. Last night has made me determined to practice racing a bit more whilst sober - it was an entirely different experience. Also, that rainbow racetrack in space (which I kept falling off and plummeting to earth from) was very bizarre - going to try that one a few times before we meet again!

Kudos to Chris for coming on and responding in a helpful and measured way. However, if he's in the mood for feedback - I would have to add myself to the list of people who've tried the Herne and won't be rushing back for the reasons mentioned above. Not only the 35 min delay in receiving our food (we'd booked a table on a fairly quiet Wednesday evening) but the quality of the service we received when we tried to explain to the waitress that the meals she had plonked down in front of us were in fact for the next table (who had ordered about 15 mins after us). A simple acknowledgment or apology would have been nice, and an offer to check on where our order was would have been great. Instead, the food got plonked on the right table and she walked off to the bar to tell her friend how hungover she was. This was about six months ago, so I don't know if that waitress is still there, but more than anything she's the reason we haven't tried it again. The food was great by the way, but the overall experience left us cold.

We've got ours sorted - however, I am officially so bad that MelborneGr is stationary and he's still beating me... :'(

We think we've created a room but can't see anyone else! Suspect we may have to try this again another night...

Could be a two or three horse race I guess! I'll be there - normally trailing at the back and/or careering off into the water/chasm. ;-)

LuvPeckham Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Checked on My Wii this morning (better then > watching breakfast Olympics) and still can only > see ANT Is that how it works - with a delay? I've seen a couple of threads that suggest you have to be online at the same time in order to "see" each other as friends for Mario Kart and one that suggested you have to exchange Wii Friend codes as well. We will probably log on this evening after about 9pm to see if there's been any change as we can't see anyone currently.
