They were painting the exterior when I drove past a few minutes ago. Goodbye bright yellow, hello a kind of mushroomy, truffle grey colour...very ED I suppose (or maybe it's an undercoat?)

It's the Irish Festival. Happens once a year, should be a midnight cut-off. Maybe next year you might want to pop along and check it out. http://www.southwarkirish.com/

Chris, what I meant, and probably didn't express well, was the thread you are referring to where people suggested that the lights might be chinese lanterns?

christian952 Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > This is a serious post, I expected replies from > nutters...it's all part of the course. Christian, I didn't see the original post but it seems pretty clear to me, from what you have described, that it was intended to be humorous and friendly. Most good forums have that kind of banter. Sorry for you if it didn't come across you that way. Is the earlier thread on here you mention the one about the chinese lanterns by the way?

There a quite a few active Neighbourhood Watch schemes in ED already. I made contact with our local organiser via the Safer Neighbourhood team for the College Ward (where I live). Work out which ward you are in and email the relevant address. Also, you can normally get a discount on your home insurance if you are an active member: http://www.met.police.uk/saferneighbourhoods/boroughs/southwark/saferneighbourhoods.htm

Someone further up this thread nailed in (in my view) when they said that chantelle should make up her own mind how she feels about it. Nothing against the different views expressed here, but you need to take that information and spend a bit of time there yourself. Different people will feel differently about stuff. I was similarly nervous about Peckham Rye when I moved here because I travel through there every day, including quite late at night. Now I feel very comfortable there, cautious as I would be anywhere in London, but I love the energy and the variety you see - and if you want okra, chillies, plaintain, yams etc there's nowhere better in London. You may even (shock horror!) get into a conversation with someone at the bus stop which certainly has never happened to me in ED. That said, it's an area with issues and you need to trust your instincts. The best thing I've ever been taught in terms of personal safety is that if something feels wrong to you, just get the heck out of there. We spend hundreds of thousands of years developing these instinctive skills and then don't trust them when the time comes.

Cock a doodle d'oh; anyone else being woken by a cockerel?
Siduhe replied to Ant's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Depends on the breed. Older "classic" breeds have a lot less meat on them, and the cockerels will roost up trees if left to their own devices. Not flying as such, more "wing assisted jumping/gliding". Domestic, more modern breeds have a lot more meat on them and the aerodynamics don't work as well. I grew up on a farm and our cockerel would regularly fly up onto the roof to see in the dawn despite his wings being clipped once or twice a year. -

Are you anywhere near the Horniman Museum? They definitely have one, and yes, we get woken up by it from time to time despite being a 10 minute walk away. -

I was thinking exactly the same thing. Of course, now that astro-turfing is an offence under the recently enacted Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations, I'm sure that the Pistacho Club wouldn't take that chance...or maybe they just fancy a visit from Trading Standards? ;-) Edited to say, now four out of four posts all praising the Pistacho Club...

Customer services at Grace and Favour
Siduhe replied to Carmel's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Just to add a bit of balance to what has been said above, goods you buy should always be in a satisfactory condition, defect free and fit for the purpose they were intended when you receive them. If you purchased the goods in person at the shop, you are entitled to seek a full refund if any of the above conditions were not met. You may not be entitled to a full refund if you have used the item. As this is the first time you've used it - I would say to still ask for a full refund, but only if you have informed the shop promptly of the fault - when did you actually buy it? Even if you are not entitled to a full refund, you can still get compensation or a repair or replacement. However, the shop are not required to give you a full refund if you have misused the bag for something which wasn't intended or ripped it on something which a bag of this type would not have been expected to handle. An example would be if you had scissors in it or something. Did the shop give any kind of explanation at all as to why they were refusing your refund? If not, I would defintely go back in and ask them for a proper explanation to be given to you in writing. Although trading standards can investigate and prosecute the shop, they can't force the shop to give you a refund - you would need to take action yourself in the Small Claims Court. May depend on how much the bag was as to whether it is worth it or not? -
Who relies on Forest Hill for electricity?
Siduhe replied to macroban's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Sean McG introduced me to this phrase. Roughly, the area Lordship Lane north of the library bordered by Forest Hill and Honor Oak Park. Includes Underhill/Overhill way where we are. Believe it may have been made up by estate agents (hence macroban's contempt?) but I've only ever seen it used in jest on this forum. -

???? - couldn't agree more, and my post wasn't intended in that way. I think it's more important to find somewhere you think you will get the right kind of care, whether that's NHS or private. Also not to have a false sense of security, over something as important as the birth of your child.
-
Without going into gory details, going private is no guarantee of a positive experience. A friend of mine had a very difficult time at one of the places you regularly read about celebrities giving birth in. All completely avoidable if she'd been given proper attention and care. She later accepted a substantial settlement on behalf of herself and her baby, but still hasn't quite got over it. I think the most important thing is to find somewhere you like and a midwife you trust. No social viewpoint to push - I have private heath insurance, but in an emergency I'd definitely want to be in an NHS hospital.

Problems getting parcels delivered by royal mail
Siduhe replied to Sita's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I can't speak for SE21/2, but in SE1 (where I used to live) there was a standing order that if a building had more than one dwelling inside (so conversion or block of flats) they weren't to ring the bell but just leave a "while you were out card", to make sure deliveries were completed on time. Could be the same thing here? -

I'm not allowed to give out their email address, but if for any reason you don't hear back, their phone number is 020 8721 2447. Try [email protected] (taken from the Met website). I have received a reply from the equivilant address for College SNT, so assume it is still current.

The fireworks at eleven/twelve pm last night were great, must have cost a fortune and much appreciated. The repeat performance at half past three this morning was, shall we say, less neighbourly... -
CamberwellOz Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > We are all off at the start of August. A big > foodie spectacular. You may want to check in advance which restaurants are open in the first two weeks of August. Lots of the older, traditional restaurants still close down for at least the first two weeks. That said, it's a lot less common than it used to be and should be easy to find some good places to eat. On the plus side, you will be there during Paris-Plage, which is a lot of fun: http://goparis.about.com/od/picturesofparis/ig/Paris-Beach-in-Pictures/ http://www.guardian.co.uk/travel/2006/jul/23/restandrelaxation.paris.france

I still struggle with the single urinal right next to the only cubicle configuration, which is so common in France. Often only fenced off by a string of hanging beads or a slatted door with lots of gaps in it. Wouldn't be so bad, but the gentlemen using it always seem to stand at a jaunty angle to the wall (no pun intended). There are some things I just don't to see (which probably means I am uptight and British).

Another vote for Riverford here - the local Southwark distributor is great - had a nice chat with him recently about their plans to increase the amount of deliverys to ED by cycle rather than by van. The plan is to reach 70% of deliveries by end of next year.

If you want to push the boat a bit (but not silly food/prices) then Au Vieux Paris d'Arcole is defintely worth a look. Very close to Notre Dame at 24, Rue Chanoinesse. I think they even serve escargot. Vast majority of the food is from organic farms in Aveyron (sp?) connected to Yvette (one of the owners). The building is one of the oldest in Paris as well (1515 or something like that). http://www.auvieuxparis.fr/

We've just got back from Paris and went to a couple of good local bistros (admittedly, they are two a penny in France) - not sure if their food is particularly "traditional" but we enjoyed it very much. Chez Janou in the Marais district - http://chezjanou.com/ - is certainly traditional in the sense that serves huge amounts of Pastis and has jugs of water all over the bar for the same. And the chocolate mousse (which came in a big bowl that you helped yourself to a serving from) looked amazing. L?Ardoise - http://lardoise-paris.com/ near the Place Concore which has a three course menu for 33 euros Somewhere we didn't try but was recommended to us (by the same friend who recommended Chez Janou), was Robert et Louise, at 64 Rue Veille du Temple. Meat lovers only need apply.

No objection to Tudor Court Rules, but will Gruntfuttock's Posture remain in force for the entirety?
