  1. Okay yas- I just asked if you looked at Hornuman as their website indicated they might but they might. I don't know that they do or even if they'd have places. I was just trying to be constructive
  2. Yas, have you looked at Horniman's? It's walking distance from Fairlawn and their website suggests they have a nursery. Perhaps that might be a suitable alternative. By the way, Fairlawn has stated that their enrolment was falling so there is no need to speculate if the numbers were falling unless you are saying the governors are wrong. It's because of this the nursery generates a loss that ultimately requires it to be shut. If it wasn't loss making it could certainly remain open.
  3. That's fine-- it wasn't clear if you'd been or not. If you have and you didn't like it, fair play. I liked it but horses for courses and all that!
  4. And if anyone is actually interested in what's happening to school budgets, you can read this guardian article. The overall budget isn't being cut but a new formula is being introduced to equalise spending across the country. Currently inner London get almost twice the per pupil funding as the worst funded areas. I'm not taking a position on this, people can make up their own minds if they think this is a fair change for the country or not. http://www.theguardian.com/education/2015/nov/24/school-funding-system-fair-local-authorities Labour councillors in Lewisham have estimated the new formula will reduce school (not nursery) budgets by approximately 10% over time. So with those facts about what's happening in Lewisham clarified, hopefully the thread can refocus on the merits (or lack their of) for Fairlawn nursery receiving additional funding outside of what its legally entitled to per pupil.
  5. Yes minder, but the cuts in Lewisham are not for the nursery budget. In fact, funding per pupil for funded nursery places is increasing and specifically circumscribed as a transfer from central government. The reason why this nursery is closing is because it runs at a loss. It runs at a loss because its enrolment is falling and it has unusually high running costs (Fairlawn's assessment). No one wants to see anyone lose their jobs or anything close ever but the fact is that an undersubscribed service cannot be kept open indefinitely if it can't cover its cost with the same funding all other state nurseries get. Given the governing board also clearly see no way to turn this around after trying different strategies, it makes the decision all the more understandable if no less regretable. The cut figure of 80m+ is cumulative and over 4 years. This years cut is 13m. This of course is a lot but represents a 5.3% change compared to the previous year's total funding. Let's not over state what the situation is. It's going to get worse over time though. However, the idea the school budgets this year have been cut by 35% is preposterous. Yas, as you've seen other posters (not just me) will challenge statements that appear false and it doesn't really bolster your cause when you do this.
  6. The Haus of Wood refurb is stalled because the owner was trying to illegally convert it to another use from memory. There were threads on this in the past. I could be totally wrong though so forum please correct me.
  7. Yas, if I disagree with a point another poster is making, I'll say as much as part of the debate. If you are asking for public support for a position you need to be prepared for people to voice opposing points of view without losing your temper. If Fairlawn can't provide 30 hours, then obviously the change of 30 hours makes no impact on their viability which was the point I was making and which you've confirmed.
  8. Yes, that's true Loz. I suppose my point is that depending on who is playing and when the game is scheduled, women can attract as much or more of a viewing audience than men. The entertainment value is largely based on if the individual is a star in the host country. The men's game has a few dominant stars at the moment and the women's game has relatively few compared to previous eras. To be frank, most of these millionaire athletes make their money via endorsements. I'm not sure why this is so controversial.
  9. Yes but for the US open, the women's game draws more viewers, particularly when Serena is playing than the men's game. The women's final is on a Sunday and the men's is on a Monday. Again, because the women's final with Serena is must see in the US, its gotten the prime viewership slot for years now. Its all about if the country hosting it has one of their superstars in the championship or if its a classic head to head. Its much more about the individual players (IMO) than women's game vs. men's game, which is justification enough for parity in pay. titch juicy Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > The men's Wimbledon final has twice as many > viewers; three times some years. > > But, the women's final being on Saturday > lunchtime, when people are more likely to be busy > might have a small part to play in that.
  10. That's a silly argument quids. If the women generate less money than so be it. They don't need to be able to physically beat the men to earn as much. Women's football in the US is as popular (maybe more up until recently) than the men's. Its not about who is strongest though giving both equal opportunity to generate revenue matters. Spectator sports is entertainment.
  11. I think this, like all sport's compensation should be determined by how much revenue to your bring in. Spectator sports are a form of entertainment and effort has nothing to do with it. There are lots of tougher sports with lower pay. Like Otta, I know a lot of people who prefer the women's game (or at least used to when the men's game as all huge hitting and less rallies). What brings in higher viewership figures on TV? My guess is that this probably fluctuates depending on who is in the final regardless of gender so different levels of prize money is probably antiquated. The male and female super starts are the biggest draw irrespective of gender.
  12. Well, Lewisham aren't closing Fairlawn nursery, the board of governors of the school are. Clearly those who run the nursery don't believe the impending changes will turn around their enrolment problem significantly so the nursery can cover its costs. If you disagree that is something you should probably direct to the board of governors of Fairlawn ryeme Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > It seems very short sighted to be closing a > preschool nursery just months before the provision > of free childcare for 3 and four year old is to be > increased to 30 hours a week. 13. That's not true. In fact the majority of living else's do not work in the sex industry uncleglen Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > The only recent examples of proper slavery has > been the abuse of women in the sex 'industry'
  14. Maybe you were reading my threads- I'm one of those American yanks from across the pond
  15. DF- they aren't white bread baps. I've actually eaten there and they are nothing like that. Again, be a decent human being and stop misrepresenting what this shop is selling and suggesting a place you've never eaten at is substandard in some way. I know this is a game to you but you are messing with someone's livelihood who is putting their neck out trying to do something new.
  16. I really do empathize if none of the other nearby places work for you or your childminder for pick up and drop offs. I hope you can find a solution that works. I still don't agree that the LA should provide additional funding to a school where one of the main reasons its losing money is because of falling enrollment but I do genuinely feel bad for what I know is going to be very disruptive even if you find another solution. I hope most people can find another LA place either at Heber, the school Fairlawn mentioned or elsewhere.
  17. Clearly trying to discuss this with you is a total waste of time. Yas you can't even acknowledge basic facts about what's going on and have been rude and passive aggressive to anyone who asked you to explain your case. You've misled the press and basically are demanding people support you by providing false information. Never mind-- as DaveR mentioned, LAs have statutory duties so no matter how many people you manage to persuade with you half truths, its extremely unlikely you'll force the LA to allocate funds inappropriately.
  18. You are making a lot of false assertions Yas as you know absolutely nothing about me. In fact, I've already said state nursery is great for socialization up thread so why don't you engage on the ideas and facts rather than trying to personally attack me with lies? I don't know where you live which is why I asked why that wasn't a good solution. You already said Heber didn't work for you so I figured you must be further south rather than north of Fairlawn, which is where the nursery I / Fairlawn mentioned is.
  19. Catalyst, DF, have either of you actually tried the new Boa place? Its quite good and if either of you haven't its really not fair to slag off a new local business on that basis. Its incredibly hard and very risky to start a new venture (as DF actually knows).
  20. Yas-- why don't you go to Haseltine?s nursery as Fairlawn suggests is possible? Its another state nursery in Lewisham that has spare places and its also got outstanding Ofsted I believe Why is pouring more money into a nursery with falling enrollment and higher than normal running costs a more appropriate option?
  21. I was trying to figure out what the were selling-- the building, the going concern etc as the price seemed low. They couldn't clarify at the time so I dropped it but they mentioned that they didn't know what the rent would after the current lease expired as the rent review hasn't done.
  22. Because, when you are asking people to do something, its important they have accurate facts so they can make an informed decision. The fact that you have to ask that, rather than answering the question simply and directly I think tells everyone anything they need to know about how you are running your campaign and presenting what's going on... as Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Why do you want to set the record straight? I just > don't understand what have you got against our > poor little nursery? :)
  23. I have never said it was a bad service. I said it was an outstanding service in earlier posts. All I am asking is if you accept that the nursery has said that enrollment was falling. Its just a yes or no question. No need for it to be exhausting. I just want to set the record straight on that fact.
  24. You are right-- near the humps where the bands change that's correct. I wasn't trying to give the minute detail of the changes just the general point that you were likely better off below 1m and worse off above it if you want to move.
  25. Yas-- are you really saying that Fairlawn hasn't stated that the nursery has suffered falling enrollment? Really?
