Reading + Q&A Local author Anne Coates will be at the shop this Thursday, and we are really looking forward to it! Anne will be talking about Death?s Silent Judgement, her new book published on the 11th of May and sequel to Dancers in the Wind. Both books feature Hannah Weybridge, a single mother and freelance journalist who lives in South East London and is thrown into the heart of a horrific murder investigation when a friend is found with her throat slashed. Following the deadly events of Dancers in the Wind, freelance journalist and single mother Hannah Weybridge is thrown into the heart of a horrific murder investigation when a close friend, Liz Rayman, is found with her throat slashed at her pro bono dental practice at St John the Evangelist church in Waterloo. The free surgery Hannah runs is attended by the homeless people who comprise Cardboard City nearby and initially the police are quick to place the blame in their direction. Hannah is not convinced and nor is Lady Rayman, Liz?s mother who employs the journalist to investigate. With few clues to the apparently motiveless crime Hannah throws herself into discovering the reason for her friend?s brutal murder, and is determined to unmask the killer. But before long Hannah?s investigations place her in mortal danger, her hunt for the truth placing her in the path of a remorseless killer? 10. Tuesday 22nd November 7pm at the shop.. eepurl.com/cotRQn 'London In Fragments, A Mudlark's Treasures' slideshow and talk with author Ted Sandling We are very much looking forward to meeting Ted and discussing his excellent new book 'London In Fragments: A Mudlark's treasures' Mudlarking, searching the Thames foreshore, has a long tradition: mudlarks used to be small boys grubbing a living from scrap. Today?s mudlarks unearth relics of the past, from Roman tiles to elegant Georgian pottery. Here are Ted Sandling's most evocative finds, gorgeously photographed in colour. Together they create a mosaic of everyday London life through the centuries, touching on ideas of Journeys, Pleasure and Vice, Industry, Adornment and Comfort. There are two themes behind the account: celebrating the beauty of small things, and making sense of the intangible connection that found objects give us to the individuals who lost them. An evocative and detailed text places the fragments back in the objects they came from, and places the objects in the flow of London's history. The French fold jacket is printed on the reverse with a map of access points to the river, and the book concludes with advice on how to start mudlarking yourself. After studying History of Art at The University of Bristol, Ted Sandling moved to London and became a garden designer and landscape historian. In 2008 he returned to the fine arts when he joined Christie?s. He now works at Christie's Education. He first went mudlarking in 2004 and was instantly hooked. if you've ever dabbled with mudlarking for fun or perhaps more seriously we will be inviting you to bring to the shop any relics and fragments you may have found, and share the stories connected with them. Free event, please email us if you would like to come so we can get an idea of numbers, thank you. Best wishes, all at Rye Books 45 Upland RD, SE22 9EF, T:020 3581 1850

  12. On 9 November 2016 Berlin will be celebrating once again, this time commemorating the 27th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. To coincide with this author Dr Hester Vaizey is joining us again to discuss her thought provoking book Born in the GDR: Living in the shadow of the wall, now published in paperback. The changes that followed the fall of the Berlin Wall in November 1989 were particularly dramatic for East Germans. With the German Democratic Republic effectively taken over by West Germany in the reunification process, nothing in their lives was immune from change and upheaval: from the way they voted, the newspapers they read, to the brand of butter they bought. But what was it really like to go from living under communism one minute, to capitalism the next? What did the East Germans make of capitalism? And how do they remember the GDR today? Are their memories dominated by fear and loathing of the Stasi state, or do they look back with a measure of fondness and regret on a world of guaranteed employment and low living costs? This is the story of eight citizens of the former German Democratic Republic, and how these dramatic changes affected them. All of the people in the book were born in East Germany after the Berlin Wall was put up in August 1961, so they knew nothing other than living in a socialist system when the GDR fell apart. Their stories provide a fascinating insight not only into everyday life in East Germany, but also into how this now-vanished state is remembered today, a quarter of a century after the fall of the Wall. Hester will be bringing some of her home brewed Berliner Weisse..we would recommend you try this.. Please email us if you can make it so we can get an idea of numbers, thank you! Free event. 23. Thursday 17th March 7pm What happens when a mother says she is 'fine' but really she is not? Local author Bridget Hargreave will be at the shop to talk about her new book 'Fine (not Fine) Milk Perspectives and Experiences of Postnatal Depression' in in conversation with Dr Helena Belgrave, Counselling Psychologist. Post-natal depression (PND), an illness which affects four in ten new mothers, is still stigmatised, and devastatingly misunderstood. In Fine (not Fine), Bridget Hargreave charts her own experiences of depression following the birth of her sons and records the histories of a collection of mothers with a diverse range of perinatal mental health problems, such as anxiety, post traumatic stress disorder, and ante-natal depression. She includes the stories of the mother who was hospitalised with severe depression, the mother who was so anxious she was physically sick every day, the mother whose birth trauma means just hearing the word "midwife" leaves her in a cold sweat, and the mother who bravely and honestly outlines the plans she made to end her own life.
